  • A Classic License Plate To Match Your Classic Vehicle

    1955 California License Plate

So you're working on restoring a 1955 Chevy Bel Air. You've got every detail down, from the gold "Bel Air" name script to the chrome spears on the front fenders. But there's one element that just doesn’t look right. The only 1955 license plate you could find is so rusted and pitted, it actually looks like it's 57 years old!

But if you live in California, you soon may be able to get a brand-spankin' new license plate that replicates the state's plates of that particular era.

A bill currently on Governor Jerry Brown's desk (A.B. 1658) would require California's Department of Motor Vehicles to create and issue a series of specialized license plates that replicate plates from the state's past. It would bring a retro look to modern license plates by allowing consumers to choose from one of three classic designs from the 1950s-1960s (black lettering on a yellow background or yellow lettering on a black background) and 1970s-1980s (yellow lettering on a blue background).

It would give consumers new options as to what sort of license plate to use on their vehicles, and provide classic car collectors a risk-free way to acquire plates that match the vintage of their vehicles.

SEMA suggests contacting the governor with your input, requesting his support for A.B 1658.
