Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Tool I have bought in years. I received the cutter, set it up, and started cutting. I only had a 110 volt plug so I used it. I tried cutting 3/16 plate and it had trouble making it though. I put In a 50 amp 220 volt plug.Wow what a difference. it cut the 3/16 like it was butter. It is like cutting with a Laser. This is easy to use. A short learning curve and you are cutting. This is the first Plasma cutter I have used and recommend buy this unit. If you are looking for a plasma cutter go ahead and spend the money for this one. I looked online before I purchased and Eastwood's had the best review. sure you can by a cheaper one but a little extra money and you have a great cutter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy with the product I got my first unit in January and it lasted 2 minutes, but the Eastwood support team got me another one in a few weeks and it has been a great tool. I've cut 1/2" flat ( its took a couple of passes but once I cleaned the slag off with a grinder it looked like a cut it with a saw. The torch head can be run along a piece of angle iron as a guide(3/8" offset) for straight cuts. 1/4 " is like cutting paper, I'm very happy with the unit. this is my second purchase of Eastwood products, I have a Mig 175 which I've run 40 pounds of wire thru and have had no issues, it's worked perfectly

Rated 5 out of 5 by from outstanding This works well for me once I get used to the full bodied tip. I am cutting .060 steel in tight detail and would like to see a reduced nozzel in order to see the pattern I am following. Cutting American Flags and the stars are difficult, I am getting the hang of it though. The tips I purchased are of no use and do not help in seeing the tip or pattern. Other than that the product is great, far superior to the entry level cutter I burned up. Some instruction or helpful hints would help with the cutter, learning from experience could be shortened, a handbook would be nice. Thanks for your concern. Merry Christas & Happy New Year Brandon

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great unit, kind-of-fun! Okay, this plasma cutter rocks! Much-quicker setup and cleaner than using torch, plus the surrounding material doesn't get anywhere near as hot with the plasma than with a torch (which will warp metal). Surgical strikes! My plasma worked okay on 120V, but it works way-better on 208V. I find if I don't have a perfect ground-clamp on the material, the cutting action is significantly reduced, surprisingly-so. Like, if I pinch a ground through a metal-fence vice-gripped to my work, the cutting-action is dull. But simply moving the ground-clamp 2" away (directly to the work), she'll cut like a laser. I don't notice the same "grounding perfection" requirements from my Mig, Tig, or Arc welders.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really nice machine I recently purchased this machine and have used it 3 times. The thing is very simple to hook up and use. I am very pleased with the performance, I have cut 1/4" steel down to 18 gauge and it performed flawlessly. I am worried about consumable life but after cutting with it several times, I am not seeing any wear on the tip. I do wish it came with more consumables than 2. Quite pleased, hopefully this thing holds up well. Appears to be well made and much better torch than the Chinese models on eBay I was considering for slightly less money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works fine I was concerned about some less than stellar previous reviews, but my unit works perfectly. Easy set up and very portable, read: not too heavy. I kind of wonder why the handpiece has a real long line and the ground cable is relatively short. The instructions are very good for the set up but woefully inadequate for use. There are no suggested settings for different thicknesses of metal vs the duty cycle or ideal standoff. You will have to spend time experimenting on your own. If you've used a gas axe before, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from working good I have been going back and forth on buying a plasma cutter big brand names are just to much cannot see spending that kind of coin. I was a machinst for the past 38 years and used high dollar plasma cutters so I was a little worried on buying the Eastwood Plasma 40. I pulled the trigger 2 weeks ago and been using it on a restore of a 55 Pontiac Star Chief. I'm Very impressed with it right now should of bought one years ago cuts sheet metal and some 3/8s angle like the big brand names Good Job Eastwood

Rated 4 out of 5 by from plasma versa cut 40 useage I have used this unit several times on 1/4" metal, so far so good. This unit should come with it's own water/oil separator I had to add my own it states it has one inside but you have to take the cover off to get to it I guess? Instead of giving you a hand held welding shield they should give you there Eastwood glasses, Instead of the chipping hammer they should give you more consumables. Will Give another review later on down the road on the extensive useage.

With my versa cut 40, in the box there is a plexi glass tube with blue ends and a steel ball inside. What is this? instructions say nothing about it.

This is used to test flow when the unit is manufactured. It is of no use to the end user and can be discarded.

Can this unit be used with a CNC Plasma cutting system, such as the Torchmate?  If so, what would be required to control it from that system?

Asked by: Alan1010
Being MOSFET, the transistors in the unit may/will have an issue with the servo's for the machine. We do not recommend it for use.

I purchased the 40 amp versa-cut plasma cutter. I need to replace the nozzle assembly. My plasma cutter does not have a metal outside nozzle. Is it inter-changeable with the metal head?

Does this machine have internal fan to keep it cool and keep it from tripping off?

Asked by: webbskee
Yes, the machine is equipped with a fan. Our plasma cutters will cut for with a duty cycle of 60% at 40 amps. In a 10 minute block of time, you can cut for six minutes continuously without overheating before the unit will reach its duty cycle limit and require cooling for the remaining four minutes. This is considerably long for most use that you will see outside of heavy industrial environments.

About Eastwood Plasma Cutter 40 Amp Versa-Cut

This innovative, affordable, plasma cutter was designed and developed by Eastwood's own R&D staff, and tested in-house on the same type of real-life projects you'll use it for. It doesn't matter where you need to work, because this plasma cutter's voltage-sensing technology lets you use either a 110v or 220v outlet with our adapter cord. Works with any standard home- or shop-type air compressor within a range of 20-65 psi; internal moisture separator ensures dry air is delivered to the torch. Rated 140 volts at 40 amps. Duty cycle: 60% at 40 amps. Weighs less than 30 lbs., for easier portability.

What is "Plasma Cutting"? Plasma cutting utilizes a high-velocity jet of ionized gas (plasma) that conducts electricity from the torch of the plasma cutter to your metal workpiece. That directed plasma stream (about 30,000 degrees F) heats the workpiece, converting the metal to molten slag. That high-velocity stream literally blows the molten metal away, leaving clean, precisely cut metal.
