Application Tips

Remove paint, rust, oil, dirt, moisture from application surface. Lab-Solvent is the recommended surface cleaner. Sitr Lab-metal well. Apply with putty knife squeegee, or similar tool. To fill holes, apply in thin layers (less than 3/8"). Let each layer dry before applying the next. Dry time: A 1/16" layer hardens in 1-2 hours; 1/8" hardens in 3-4 hrs. Infra-red lamp use will speed drying time. For vertical or overhead applications, pour Lab-metal into open container and allow to stand 5-10 minutes to render it less fluid. Shelf life 2 years in unopened can. Not intended for use as an adhesive.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best product on the market I use Lab Metal exclusively in my restorations. Works better than any other product on the market and I have tried most. My only caution is to use Lab Solvent only with this product. Use the Lab Solvent to smooth out your work to minimize the amount of sanding. Lab Metal dries so hard it is a bear to sand if you apply it in a sloppy manner. Great product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves a TON of time! Lab Metal is the PERFECT choice for repairing, permanently, rust holes, accidental holes, covering welds and joints, and a lot of other things. It DOES work with powder coating. You can't over heat it though. Heating the oven higher than required to cure the paint will cause Lab Metal to bubble. Use the right temp and it's perfect. I use this to cover large weld joints that may not be perfect, and I don't want to drag out a welder to re-weld the joint. I cover it with Lab Metal and sand it smooth, and it looks perfect when finished and painted. I used it to fill in rust on a 45 year old Wheel Horse mower deck, and it saved me a dozen hours of welding the holes closed. Lab metal filled the holes and looks original when sanded and painted. A real time saver. It takes a little learning curve because it does dry very quickly, so one must continue to paint solvent on it while smoothing it. It's definately not a problem though. I wish it came in different colors that match items I am repairing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lab Metal...hard stuff Seems to work out ok. Yes, needs to be thinned out a bit with the cleaner. My concern is how it holds up under vibration of vehicle use. Seems a little brittle. Have used Allmetal before and love the consistancy, Lab Metal reminds me alot of cast plaster. Dries to become very hard and thats good, as long as it doesnt fall out

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Work great if you work fast I use Lab-Metal to fill small pin holes and minor defects on sand cast aluminum parts before powder coating. It starts to set in about 30 seconds so work fast and you will be happy with the product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Time consuming to use. I bought his product to fill in flaws in a rough casting prior to powder coating. The product had separated in the can, solvent on top and hard dense stuff in the bottom of the can. I was finally able to get it mixed to a soft paste-like texture but it was hard work! I expected this stuff to work something like body putty but that was not my experience. First, you only get one chance to spread it. If you try to shape or smooth it with additional passes it crumbles. Adding some thinner, as suggested in the use tips, improves workability somewhat. Another problem is that this stuff drys harder than the aluminum casting I was trying to repair which makes blending the repair difficult. As tough as this stuff is to use I wonder if I just got a can that was past it's shelf life.

Will this product conduct low voltage electricity?

Asked by: Bell1
I believe so. It contains aluminum and the hi-temp version can be powder coating so it must be conductive to some extent.

Can this be used to fix alloy wheel curb rash? Will the finished patch color be similar to unpainted alloy?

Asked by: Jdmatt
It can if you are painting them. If you are powder coating them use the hi-temp version #10288Z. I used the hi-temp on my wheels and it was a slightly darker gray than my alloy wheels were after being media blasted. When you apply it make sure you sand and blend it really well like you're doing bodywork on a car or the repaired area will be faintly "outlined" in the finished paint.
