Steel and iron parts to be blackened need to be thoroughly cleaned by removing all grease and other coatings down to bare metal. Cleaning with a solvent like Low VOC PRE (11949Z), and chemically cleaning with Fast Etch gallon, is recommended to assure than an even blackened coating is achieved. Rinse coated parts in water, and force dry then spray with Diamond Clear Satin for Bare Metal.

Used the product to blacken / finish the clevis pins and other steel pins on the 1954 Ford 850 farm tractor I restored. The black with the red and gray paint looks great and gives it that factory touch.

After cleaning parts with glass bead in my blast cabinet, I wipe them down with Pre, let dry, place them in a sock made of aluminum screen door mesh, immerse in the solution for 60 seconds, allow to dry on a paper towel, then spray with satin clear. After dry to the touch, I then put them in a toaster oven at lowest setting for 15 minutes to bake. Great results.
