About Evercoat® Slick Sand Gallon

As a primer, Slick Sand prevents bleed-through of fillers; as a surfacer, it fills minor pits. Won't shrink, sands easily (wet or dry), and is compatible with any topcoat system. Easy spray-on application using your spray gun; you'll need a primer gun with a 1.7-to-2.2mm fluid nozzle/air cap. Clear liquid activator included.

ordered 8 qt cans, after waiting several days for my order to come I called to find out that it was on back order, At that time I ordered 2 -1 gal cans and got them in two days problem is that they only came with activeator for one gal, called and ordered another pack of activator waited 5 days and called to find out that it had not been sent, received it 2 days latter.

VERY POOR SERVICE.

As previously mentioned, the solids settle out quickly. I used a stick, had to stir it about an hour to get all the solids back into suspension. Mixing is easy- the tubes of MEK have markings, making it easy to get the right amount into the primer without overdoing it. I used a Harbor Freight HVLP gun with a 1.8mm tip. You MUST reduce at least 10% with Acetone, or it'll clog your paint strainer and the gun. Got 2.5 quarts on the car, before it was impossible to shoot- the gun had clogged, and I didn't have any acetone to thin it.

The car I shot this with has had heavy bodywork done- lots of uneven areas, waves, etc. Two heavy coats over the extensive work, 1 coat over the panels that looked "ok." The worst parts of the car look pretty straight now, after sanding with 220-grit. This stuff is fantastic for filling, and evening out gentle waves that are hard to tackle with normal filler.

Since my paint will need to go over 400-grit (or finer) sanded panels, I'll be hitting the entire car with another 2-3 quarts, thinned out with acetone, to give a nice smooth finish, and avoid the scratches that might show under the color.

Bottom line: IF you have it mixed thoroughly, and then thin so it'll spray smoothly, you'll be VERY happy with the results. Just don't assume you can shoot it without the thinning, or your gun will be full of jelly halfway through your shoot. GOOD STUFF!

I have been using Feather Fill and other Evercoat products for years (been painting cars for over 30 years). Thought I'd try a gallon of Slick Sand. I put it on a shaker for about 30 minutes, poured a quart in a mixing cup and added the hardener. It started foaming right away. No kidding, it foamed like vinegar water with baking soda thrown in. I waited for the foaming to stop, and poured it through a filter into a cup. It foamed some more. Then I put the lid on the cup, and it started to foam up through the vent. I was really ticked off by then. I have pictures and a witness. I called Evercoat expecting them to take care of it for me and just got, "Yeah, that stuff does foam up sometimes. Just give it a few minutes." They refused to do anything about it. They suggested I contact Eastwood for a refund. I am through using Evercoat products. And before you say I did something wrong, I've been doing this for a long time, I know what I am doing.

I ordered a gallon from Eastwood and managed to get free shipping!

As previously mentioned, you will need to either get the can shaken or stir it with a stick (I got a pack of wooden spoons for $1 that I stick in a drill and mix with).

I use Slick Sand when I'm doing custom fiberglass work to help finish my plugs before I make a mold. Slick Sand sands easily and leaves a nice smooth finish, allowing me to get flawless molds that require little polishing before attaining that glass-smooth finish that is needed for a professional mold. I have bought Slick Sand before will again!

This was the second gallon of Slick Sand I have purchased from Eastwood. You definitely want to spray this soon after receiving it as my first gallon sat on the shelf at my house for about 3 months and the solids had settled to a sludge in the bottom of the can. Get this stuff shaken by a paint shop if you can before using, or stir it really thoroughly.

Mixing was very straight forward, 1 Qt. to 1 tube of hardner. I found that even with my 2.3 tip HVLP gun, I had to thin with about 10% Acetone to get it to flow through my gun and spary out.

Some tips on shooting the product. Sand out your project to 180 grit (blocking) first. Spray a light tack coat and let it flash off, then follow up with wetter coats. I had a lot of sags and runs when I sprayed a wet coat on the first pass (could also be attributed to thinning it with Acetone).

Sand easily, just as promised.
