Got my copper Butt-weld Backer set today and after the first use the magnets became weak. As soon as you start to weld the plate falls off. The metal is completely clean and should hold but doesn't. These plates are a great idea but they need work. Very disappointed especially for the price you pay.
Plates are Good, Magnets Suck (Posted on 4/23/2013)

If these plates had decent magnets, they would be the ultimate choice for working with thin sheetmetal and preventing blow-outs. But they don't which is a disappointment for an Eastwood Product. When I can find enough surface area to get the 8" plate magnets to hold; then the utility is excellent. I find with the length of the 8" plate, I can often hold it in place and get the job done so use the flat plate often. However, if the back surface is not flat, then you will need the curved/multi shaped welders helpers set and then a long arm to hold it in place. Should Eastwood fix the magnets so they have some holding power then this set would be a great product and priced right. As it, quality and price sucks.

Works excellent as a backer for plug or butt welding. I produced very good plug welds as a beginner after using these practicing for about 10 min. The magnets suck though. They lost their hold as soon as the copper got warmed up. I just took another magnet & backed them up or would clamp them in place if needed. A bit pricey though for just a couple of peices of flat copper. Not much to manufacture after all. Certainly the cost isn't in the magnets used. Only negs are price & magnets.

I had the magnets pull out after getting the copper hot from welding too and the magnets seemed to have lost their magnetism after that also. The copper is heavy and works well to weld against but as has been stated, they don't bend and I find thier use limited. I bought 2 large, flat magnets to hold the plates in place and have also used clamps to hold them. I will be purchasing the flexible wedges for use on fender repair for better contour conformity.

These consist of a nice piece of heavy copper. They works well on very flat surfaces only. It will not conform to surfaces that are not flat so magnets will not adhere to the workpiece. The magnets are held into hole in the copper by a pressure fit. I got mine so hot that he copper expanded and some of the magnets fell out. When I tried to press them back in the magnets broke into pieces.

Been using these restoring my MGB. Worth the price. Makes life a lot easier welding. Makes a good backing, heat sink.

wish the magnets were larger and stronger.. but they are acceptable. If the surface is not flat, you can clamp them in place

Nice heavy pieces. very well made.

Everyone in the autobody class I am in borrows them. Once they use them, they buy them. Wish I got a commission from Eastwood!!

The peices are great. More shapes (long and thin, or wedge shapes would be helpful for those closed in and hard to reach areas.

These are a must have for your welding toolbox
