I have just finished this book by Dick Bird. I have to say that I'm not that impressed. The first half of the book is the most helpful. It shows examples of classic lettering types. There could be a lot more instruction to the methods in each type of letter style. A short paragraph doesn't really feel like you are getting the insight that one would get from a instructional book. It does show examples of fonts that are helpful but that's about it. I think it would be better if he went into more description of working on different surfaces, how paint reacts in different ways, and the other tools to have. The second half of the book is pretty much worthless (other than the first story). That is all it is...Stories. Unfortunately, not well written ones either. Some of them didn't even have to do with painting at all. I did read them all hoping that I would dig up some hidden gems somewhere in these rambling paragraphs but there isn't much there. If the author wanted to write something talking about what one could expect when working as a sign painter (I suspect that is what he was trying to do) that would have been helpful. However, there isn't many people that would even find that sort of work anymore or even if they did these are stories from the 70's and 80's and doing commercial lettering. Totally different world now. Maybe it is lost in translation. I think that perhaps someone could pick up a good lettersetting or typography book and watch a few YouTube videos and get the same information that is in this book.
