About Eastwood Original Chassis Black Paint

Not glossy, not dull, just right! Authentic 60-70% gloss looks great on suspension parts and frame. Also available in Qts (covers 40 sq. ft.). Aerosol (covers 8 sq. ft.). Proper for all makes and models. Tough formulation resists chips, corrosion and temperatures up to 300 degrees F; covers fast, up to four times the coverage of similar size Aerosols.; cover entire chassis with just 3-5 cans! (Available in quarts, spray only). Smoothly applies over bare metal, Eastwood Rust Encapsulator, or Eastwood Chassis Black Primer. Buy 3 or more and save.Made in the USA. 30 Day Eastwood Warranty.
One 14 oz. aerosol can covers 8 Sq. ft, Max Temp 300F. The average car needs 3 to 5 cans.
Chassis Black Aerosol is a durable, high solids paint. Can be applied to bare metal/primed surfaces for better durability. Covers 8 sq ft, and withstands up to 300 degrees F. For rusty areas, we recommend the Chassis Restoration Kit (10067Z). Chassis Black works great over bare metal, Chassis Black Primer, or Eastwood Rust Encapsulator. Allow 15-20 minutes between coats. Recoating after 12 hours will preserve the same gloss level. After application, the object should dry overnight before use. For best results, use when can is between 70F to 90F, 50% or less humidity. DO NOT topcoat Chassis Black with Chassis Black more than 45 minutes after last coat as lifting may occur. DO NOT use Chassis Black over single stage Self-Etching Primer.
Use in a well ventilated area. Respirator required.

Usage over primer (Posted on 3/24/12)

I decided to give this stuff a second try since I have so much of it in stock. I had always used it directly on sandblasted metal with good results. I decided to try it with the primer and it would scratch right off. I tried it again over the primer and found that if you apply it as soon as the primer is dry to the touch, it sticks like glue. The directions say to paint over the primer within 15 minutes to 36 hours. I can say that 10 hours totally doesn't work. 15 minutes is what it took for me.
Not as good as it used to be. (Posted on 3/23/12)

I've used this product for 25 years. It seems like the quality and solids content have steadily fallen. I used it recently for the last time. It doesn't have the claimed chip resistance, chemical tolerance or adhesion, and this is over a sandblasted and epoxy primed surface. Even several weeks after it's applied, brake parts cleaner will remove it right down to the primer with no effort. For amatuer work it's ok, but why go to the time and trouble to do a frame off restoration and use such a low quality coating? Go with 2K black, it's well worth the additional cost.

I purchased this product a month ago in a quart can. I sprayed my entire 1967 VW beetle floorpanwith this product using my Devbliss spraygun. I shot it over Eastwood Rust Encapsulator following the directions on the can. It turned-out fantastic. The floorpan is still on the rack and looks brand new. I also shot my front H-beam with Gloss Eastwood Classic Chassis black because I was so impressed with the Satan black. It looks like glass. I would highly recommend this product. Just follow the directions and dont cut corners.

I use over Rust Encapsulator on frame and parts for a 1968 Corvette that I'm restoring. It looks great and is super tough. I can just about guarantee that the negative reviews come from people who didn't prepare the surface properly, or didn't follow directions, or tried to use Chassis Black over a self-etching primer. It requires a minimum of 2 coats to look good, and you must wait at least 24 hours between coats. I can't speak to any other applications, but on sandblasted bare metal or over Rust Encapsulator it works great

I can't comment on the durability of this paint since I just applied it... but after using two layers of primer in two separate rattle cans from two separate manufacturers, i was super dissapointed with how splotchy and runny Eastwood's can was. I followed the spraying instructions to a T, even inverting the can to clear the nozzle periodically, and still i got horrible spots. Ultimatly I care more about its durability than appearance, but this stuff made a mess. Would not apply in situ.
Great coverage, but... (Posted on 5/3/10)

I purchased this product and it has held up great out doors and in the elements for some time now. However, I have learned the hard way that the paint doesnt like brake fluid! The rust encapsulator seems to be holding up, but the chassis black is just pelling off.
