About Gas Tank Sealer Kits - Eastwood Gas Tank Sealer

A clean supply of fuel is critical to the performance of your vehicle—hard starting, stumbling under load, and sluggish response may be symptoms that your car's fuel system is dirty. The best way to ensure that the gas or diesel fuel stays clean is to be certain that the fuel tank is free of rust, and this Fuel Tank Sealer Kit helps you keep it rust-free.
This Fuel Tank Sealer Kit also seals minor leaks in metal tanks up to 20 gallons in capacity, and that can save you a great deal of time and money by not having to locate a replacement tank.
You’ll need muriatic acid (available at your local hardware store) to clean the tank first; dilute it 20:1.
Do not use this kit in tanks containing nitro methane or aniline oils.
Car gas tank kit includes 1 pint of Rust Remover, a 7 oz. container of Metal Wash, 2 pints of sealer, and instructions.
Motorcycle gas tank kit includes 1 pint of Rust Remover, a 7 oz. container of Metal Wash, 1 pints of sealer, and instructions.
Extra pints of sealer are available individually (10087Z). Tank Tone Metallic Coating (10030Z) is formulated with zinc to prevent future tank rust. Muriatic acid (available at your local hardware store) cleans the tank.
Q. How does this kit work?

A. To seal your gas tank, simply clean the inside with Fast Etch, muriatic acid, and acetone. Then pour in the internal sealer and let cure. The sealer resists fuel additives and is compatible with both gas and diesel fuels. Your reconditioned tank will now resist rust and corrosion build-up, ensuring years of reliable service.
Additional sealer can be applied if the coating hasn't been exposed to fuel. Should the need arise to remove old sealer, pour in a gallon or more of acetone. It may take up to 2 days for the acetone to completely dissolve the old sealer.

Q. Does the tank material matter?

A. If you wish to use this kit on a fiberglass tank, test for compatibility by exposing an inconspicuous area to acetone to test for softening. If no excessive softening occurs, follow label instructions but omit muriatic acid and Eastwood Rust Remover steps. If you wish to use this kit for an aluminum tank, omit the muriatic acid step. Q. Any precautions?

A. Do not use this kit with tanks containing nitro methane or aniline oils.
Not for use in tanks containing nitro methane or aniline oils.
Work in a well-ventilated area. Leave at least one opening uncapped when not actually tumbling the tank.
You’ll need to buy muriatic acid from your local hardware store to clean the tank first; the acid will need to be diluted 20:1.

Does not seal small leaks (Posted on 1/18/13)

I am a ASE Master Auto and Master Heavy Truck Technician and my day job includes writing training and workshop manuals for an OEM. So, like most people who buy from Eastwood, I understand the importance of following the directions. I bought the kit to remedy a small leak on the bottom of the gas tank on my 48 Case tractor. The previous owner had silver soldered the tank in an attempt to repar a huge leak. It worked for the most part, but a small leak remained - it would empty the tank in 2-3 weeks. I used the kit and followed the instructions. All results I achieved during the process matched the instructions except the white coating appears thin and is streaked. Before reinstalling the tank, I "leak tested" the tank using a shop-vac blower and soapy water. As you can see, the leak remains. I got back on this site to order more sealer to add another coat, but after reading the reviews I think I will get a can of Acetone, melt the solder and repaint the tank. What a waste of my holiday vacation.

I used this product on my 1947 tractor the tank was really bad. The bottom of the tank needed to be welded with a patch. That was 3 years ago and I have not had any problems. Great product saved me from buying a tank

I started to by reading instructions a few time to understand process completly i got all the materials needed and placed them in the order they where to be used. I followed the instuction to the letter all but i i repeated the step of using the acid to get all old material out. After completion the tank set for four weeks waiting on parts needed to be mounted to tractor and parts for the carb. Once everthing was installed i began pouring fuel into tank to see white flakes going into my sedimant bowl and two weeks later i went to put some more gas in tank an there is a piece of sealer about 1 inch by three inches flaking off of inside the filler tube. I then called eastwood for support and was sent to Tech support and got voice mail i called back back and they connected me to someone directly and we went through the steps and finally the only suggestion or offer given to me was to use acyeton to remove the sealer. Thanks that leaves me out of the money i spent and still dont have a sealed tanks.

I put this in a brand new tank etched it twice and the product separated form my tank. It clogged the fuel filter and burned up my new fuel pump. I called they said it was out of warranty. I had bought it a couple years ago and just now finished the car to get it on the road so it had plenty of time to set up too. They said it was something I did wrong with it. Come to find out from some other people that had it in theirs that after the Ethanol was added it did the same thing. Any way a new pump and 2 gallons of Acetone later the tank is clean. They told me the Acetone would strip this crap from my tank and it did do that well. Just don't by the product. I would have ranked it lower if I could have!!!!

I am a professional mechanic and own my own automotive shop. I bought this kit for my 1989 GSXR 750 fuel tank. It worked perfectly. I followed the instructions to the 'T'. However I used straight muratic acid instead of the diluted acid. My tank was heavily rusted and the diluted acid did not work. after all the rust was gone the rest of the kit worked perfectly. This is one of the best and reasonably priced kits on the market. Thank you.

This gas tank sealer kit was awful. One year after applying the sealer, I started getting a low fuel pressure warning light. I checked my fuel filter, and it had some rust flakes and a square of the gas tank liner in it! After pulling the tank, I found the sealer coming off in giant sheets. Now I have to take the tank in to get boiled (which I should have done to start with) and hope they can get all this sealant out so I'm not forced to buy a new tank. Also, I have a PhD in chemistry and could write textbooks on surface prep, following directions for reactions, etc. so I followed their directions to the last detail. This product was so bad, I don't know if I can trust any eastwood products.
