About Eastwood After Blast - Metal Prep

Use with a plastic spray bottle (not included) to liberally apply to the metal surface, then wipe and reapply until all contaminants are removed. The blend of aqueous cleaners and phosphoric acid properly cleans and etches the metal, and leaves a zinc phosphate coating that improves paint, primer or powder adhesion. Also protects against flash corrosion for extended periods. Use on all your just-blasted cast iron, steel or aluminum components.

Its difficult to evaluate a product that is not well understood. Phosphoric acid is normally neutralized following application by rinsing with water and then air drying.

The directions say to spray on, let sit for a spell and then wipe off. Repeat until metal is clean.

The problem is that these directions are of little use as the procedure does not provide visible results that give one confidence all is working properly. Multiple sprays and wipes lead to streaking. One application and wipe leave a nice gray finish. Another application leaves a white streaking residue.

The lack of neutralization with water makes one wonder if acid residue is being left behind that will affect the primer and paint that is to follow.

A better, more detailed, description is in order. Unfortunately, Eastwood does not have the tech support it advertises. You can't get anyone on the phone, the do not call back when you leave a message. I'm beginning to believe Eastwood has lost their way.
Eliminated flash rusting (Posted on 1/24/13)

I used the Eastwood Gel Rust Dissolver to remove all the rust from my dashboard because it could get to areas sanding wouldn't. After rinsing, the metal flash rusted quickly, so I hit it with the After Blast, and the flash disappeared and left a nice coating of zinc behind. It's a combination that worked excellent.

This is my first time using the product and have been applying to an antique tractor. We had problems with flash rusting after paint removal and using wire wheel, so we tried this. It has worked great in the high humidity and we have not had any reoccurance of flash rust.

The first step to a good paint job is prep work and this stuff is a must. Cleans and etches bare steel for paint and really gets it to adhere well. May sound pricey but I only used about a quarter of the gallon on an entire frame and that was using generously.

This stuff is excellent for use on any bare metal! After media blasting some rusty areas on the sheet metal on my '67 mustang I found some heavy pitting in areas. I used used paint stripper on the non-rusty areas and used after blast on the blasted areas. Once it had dried and phosphetised the metal it matched the original surrounding phosphitizing metal from the factory of 44 years ago. I filled the pits with metalic filler and coated with 2K Urethane primer and I feel very confident these steps will prevent any future rust.

This is great stuff to have in your garage to treat any bare metal. I cleaned some other small parts and once the surface was phosphitized I hit them with a coat of Zero Rust and they look like new!

Product does exactly what you need after blasting. I use it after grinding also and works well. Turns you metal grayish color when it finishes drying and is ready to coat.

Yes has a strong odor, follow directions. I have many small items to blast, this is a great way to get them all ready and keep them in good condition prior to painting. It goes a long way. Highly recommended!

This stuff works as advertised. Spray outside where ventilated. Tends to remove galvanized coating that my bead blast won't lift, so be careful. Also bubbles and gets hot when spraying on magnesium parts. I'm not being negative - this stuff is just strong. >^..^<

I've been blasting parts for my restoration, but am not ready to prime/paint/powder coat them till I have a batch ready.
I tried Metal Wash afterwards and it worked but not perfectly. I would still get some flash rust in spots.
This works a lot better for protecting the metal afterward though it's slow. The fumes are very potent, even in an open garage they're strong. Use outside or with a mask.
A little goes a long way, I have a spray bottle with it in and just a light application is sufficient, and I usually only need one.
The parts I've done have been sitting in high humidity heat for a week or two with no signs of flash rust.
Still, it's not cheap for something they want you to apply liberally, but it does seem to work.
I have yet to see how it affects top coats as I'm not ready to paint or powder any of the parts yet.

I bought After Blast as it was advertised to clean and stop flash rusting after media blasting, grinding and stripping. I was stripping my 73 Challenger and was having problems with flash rust, especially in the high humidity Houston area.

To my surprise, this product cleaned the metal extremely well. Alll the rust, even in small scratches, was removed. I've been using a cleaning disk to remove paint and Bondo, and the swirls in the metal left by the disks seem to be removed by After Blast. The metal actually LOOKS really clean, too!

I was a little concerned that one jug of After Blast wasn't going to be enough for my entire car, but I was pleasantly surprised at how far just a little went. I can now use that extra bottle I bought to clean small parts before refinishing as well!

Overall, exceeded my expectations and I actually glad I bought this product, and I think you will be too!
