Versa-Cut 40 Plasma Cutter easily slices through materials up to 3/8" thick. Our Eastwood-designed plasma cutter is your smartest choice for making clean, fast cuts through steel, stainless or aluminum as thin as 24-gauge, or as thick as 3/8". Compared to mechanical cutting, our Versa-Cut 40 Plasma Cutter works significantly faster, and makes curved and intricate cuts more easily and precisely. Inverter technology offers superior arc stability and plasma cutting power using either 110 or 220 volts, making this a portable unit that is also light weight. A built-in pilot arc system allows for instant arc striking and ease of use when cutting rusty material and expanded metal. The internal moisture separator helps to ensure clean dry air gets to the torch to give you consistent results.

About Eastwood Plasma Cutter 40 Amp Versa-Cut

This innovative, affordable, plasma cutter was designed and developed by Eastwood's own R&D staff, and tested in-house on the same type of real-life projects you'll use it for. It doesn't matter where you need to work, because this plasma cutter's voltage-sensing technology lets you use either a 110v or 220v outlet with our adapter cord. Works with any standard home- or shop-type air compressor within a range of 20-65 psi; internal moisture separator ensures dry air is delivered to the torch. Rated 140 volts at 40 amps. Duty cycle: 60% at 40 amps. Weighs less than 30 lbs., for easier portability.

What is "Plasma Cutting"? Plasma cutting utilizes a high-velocity jet of ionized gas (plasma) that conducts electricity from the torch of the plasma cutter to your metal workpiece. That directed plasma stream (about 30,000 degrees F) heats the workpiece, converting the metal to molten slag. That high-velocity stream literally blows the molten metal away, leaving clean, precisely cut metal.

Okay, this plasma cutter rocks! Much-quicker setup and cleaner than using torch, plus the surrounding material doesn't get anywhere near as hot with the plasma than with a torch (which will warp metal). Surgical strikes!

My plasma worked okay on 120V, but it works way-better on 208V. I find if I don't have a perfect ground-clamp on the material, the cutting action is significantly reduced, surprisingly-so. Like, if I pinch a ground through a metal-fence vice-gripped to my work, the cutting-action is dull. But simply moving the ground-clamp 2" away (directly to the work), she'll cut like a laser. I don't notice the same "grounding perfection" requirements from my Mig, Tig, or Arc welders.

I've been wanting my own cutter for some time now, and decided it was time to buck up. This cutter seemed like a good deal, even though I know it's made in the land of China.

The unit looks good right out of the box, and after some assembly and reworking the positive lead ring terminal per instructions, I had it up and running.

The first thing to note is that it is LOUD when it's cutting. It has a very high pitched whistle or scream. Loud enough that I should probably wear hearing protection, and for sure I'm annoying the neighbors when I'm making cuts later in the evening.

I adjusted the air pressure and amperage down to get really nice cuts. (Light sheet metal) About the 10th cut, the pilot arc started refusing to work... I checked the tips and they look fine. I tried turning the air pressure down more per the help section of the instructions, but that doesn't help. The tips look fine, and should last a LOT more than 10 cuts anyway! It still makes cuts fine , but you have to be right near the metal to keep the arc going.

I will agree that most people will want the extended tips. The torch is fairly wide, and the tip pretty flush to the end, so getting into corners is difficult.

In all, this plasma cutter works, but I'm not terribly pleased with my purchase. Hopefully Tech can resolve my pilot arc issue. I'm curious if the rest of you have noted the screaming... I kinda think not, since it is VERY loud... perhaps I have a bad torch or something...

I've read all the reviews so I expected to have some trouble as a trade off for the price...I did. Cutter arrived. I hooked it up to air supply and it leaked air inside the case. I tried to contact tech support via their voice mail because they don't ever answer the phone. I left two messages and didn't hear back so I wrote an email. They emailed me back the next day and said that they would send out a new air control valve. Yes they expect you to fix their mistakes. I waited. It arrived with no instructions what so ever. I opened the case and was about to install it and noticed that the air was actually leaking around the air dryer fitting so I fixed that instead. Tried the cutter and found that the arc was unstable and kept going out. Then finally the overload light went on and the unit failed completely. I got hold of tech support again via email and now they are going to send me a new unit. However that nasty customer service lady that everyone has been writing about here said that they have to receive my old one back before they will send the new one out. I offered to guarantee the return of the old one with my credit card so they could send the new one right away but she said no. Since I am in CA it will be a 2 week turn around. My patience is wearing thin. Bottom line: It's a lottery, you might get a good one right out of the box or you might have to do the little dance with them if you get a bad one. I'm OK with that considering the price. If you find yourself in this situation here are a couple of time saving tips: First don't bother calling tech support. With all the messages I have left them, no one has ever called me back. Email them. The tech I have been emailing with, Sean, has been very helpful and responsive. Second, avoid customer service. Although I have spoken to a nice person there, at least one woman is very nasty and you don't want to asking her for help. And lastly I have tried to be honest here and give the facts of my experience, not just complain. I knew this was a possibility when I bought this thing.and I just got a bad number in the lowball lottery. It's OK. I'll hang in there and eventually I'll get a good cutter at a very good price. When you think about it, it's worth my time because I can't afford a $1000+ plasma cutter.

I was concerned about some less than stellar previous reviews, but my unit works perfectly. Easy set up and very portable, read: not too heavy. I kind of wonder why the handpiece has a real long line and the ground cable is relatively short. The instructions are very good for the set up but woefully inadequate for use. There are no suggested settings for different thicknesses of metal vs the duty cycle or ideal standoff. You will have to spend time experimenting on your own. If you've used a gas axe before, you will be pleasantly surprised.

I have had this cutter for a few months now... so far so good. Was a bit nervous due to some of the negative reviews. I run a good quality air compressor and dry air and haven't had any problems at all. I would recommend this cutter to a friend.

This cutter is a really good cutter for the money. I am using it on a restoration job and have had no problems whatsoever. There is a slight learning curve but not too difficult. I had floor pans removed from my truck in around 15 minutes. I am very pleased with this unit. There are a few "cheap" pieces but for this price there will always be a trade off. Once again, I am very pleased with this unit.
