Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rust Encapsulator & Silver Agent I have applied a lot of the black matte encapsulator finish on an old truck frame without much if any surface prep & some white rust encapsulator on old shocks. I would say the paint is great & the applicator (me) needs replacement. Even at that I think it stopped the rust and now six months later I see no bleed through & I have been watching it on the white shocks. These shocks were ugly rusty and pitted & now they are bright white and look great at 10'. Sure makes for an easy improvement on rusted truck frames. I used Eastwood's wheel paint with more prep and it looks great. We'll see in time and with winter salt coming. Sorry pics bit blurry

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Use of Rust Encapsulator on Mustang Cowl I'm working on a 68 Mustang Fastback, with the dreaded Cowl repair, I replaced the drivers and passengers side cowl, I decided to use Rust Encapsulator on the whole bottom cowl and it looks great, I also used it on the ne floorpans and it will cover the Eastwood seam sealer. I will probably be using more on the bottom side of the floor pans on the surface rust of the welds. One of the best features is that it dries in about 20 minutes and you can paint over it. PS wear clothes you don't care about and disposible gloves, because it will not come out. If you get it on your skin a small shot of brake cleaner will get it off, hand cleaner will not. Thanks for a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Stuff Is Fantastic My local body shop wanted nearly $1000 to replace my front bumper. Instead, I ordered the black rust encapsulator and planned to cover it with a bra. After some minimal sanding, I applied two coats and it looks fantastic! I have the bra, but I don't even need it. It matches my front grill, so you don't even notice it's not painted metallic grey as it was. I would not hesitate to use this on anything that rusts. I told all my friends I would want to be a distributor I believe in this stuff so much. I also told them I would help with their projects as it was easy and enjoyable to work with. It covered and and sealed like a dream. I will be buying again soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this stuff I have been using the black rust ecapsulator for over 6 years - both from the can and the spray can now on a variety of projects from my 66 Mustang to my 66 F250 and now a 66 VW Beetle. Goes on great, dries relatively fast and is very durable. I've used it several times without a topcoat and it holds up great. Given that I live in Arizona I can't say I have tested this stuff to the limit in terms of rust prevention, but it is very handy when you just can't get off that last little bit of rust. Gives me peace of mind. I even use it on bare metal that is not rusted. It's a bit pricey and sometimes the nozzle clogs or the accelerant runs out before the can is empty, but overall I have been very pleased with the product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it says Used this on the bottom of my 1962 Cadillac Coupe Deville. Was leary of some of the reviews. Basically don't spray it on bare metal, don't use it in the cold, and be prepared for some of the cans to clog. Other than that, we pressure washed the bottom of the car and got everything clean. Then we sprayed with two coats of Rust Encapsulator and then two coats of Chassis Black from Eastwood. Some reviews said that if you didn't top coat it then the rust would come through in about a year so that's why we went with the Chassis Black top coat. Looks great. Went on great. A couple cans clogged up but I was expecting that. Sometimes just switching the nozzle with another fixed it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing Sorry, but this doesn't seem to work very well at all in areas that are exposed to water, at least in my experience. So far every spray on product I've tried, regardless of brand, doesn't seem to work very long before more rust begins showing up and bleeding through. The only product that impresses me as being effective is Por Patch and Por-15 paint, and I'm very glad I discovered them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems to to the job Bought this for my '71 Mustang. I applied 2 coats, first one thin, seciond one more liberal. The second coat smoothed out very nice. Only issue I had was that it doesn't want to cover clean shiney metal. I was painting the cowl and there was some "virgin" metal and the paint didn't want to cover it. I expect that a little more roughing up would have solved the problem. There is only so much room in there for my hand. I will be usign this prioduct for the rest of the car and would recommend this product to all. Time will tell the longevity but I am hopeful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is awesome I bought this to touch up my engine compartment on my 72 Mustang convertible. I brushed off the rusty areas with a wire brush, scuffed up everything, wiped it all down with acetone and applied. I used two or three wet coates to get great coverage and I'm sure there won't be any rust coming back any time soon. Eastwood products really perform to their claims. I was planning on spraying a semi-gloss black over this to match the stock gloss levels, because the matt really isn't concours for a Ford, but it looks so good that I decided to paint the rest of the engine compartment with this product. It looks that good!

IF I were to purchase a quart container and once opened and exposed to air, can the container be sealed and balance of remaining product be used? Or does it harden in the can?

Asked by: TSMA
As long as you seal the can up tightly and store it around 70F the remaining product should be good for up to a year. Just make sure to not have any paint in the sealing surface of the lid.

I am working with a truck frame with heavy rust on inside channels. Can I just use this, or do I need a converter?

Asked by: swimlvr591
With severe rust a rust converter should be used first.

Does this product need a topcoat to stay durable? How well does it stand sunlight (uv ) ?

Asked by: LiftedNate
Rust Encapsulator is UV resistant, so it does not need a top coat. However, it can be top coated, and i would recommend it if it was a high traffic area such as a frame... Ideal topcoat would be one of our Chassis Black paints..

i bought a car that was in the middle of a resturation thay sanded down some of the body and did not seal it ,there is a lot of surface rust ,the car will be stored for the next year or so,would you sugest using encapsulator or convertor on the panels

Asked by: jneider
Your best option would be to use the Rust Encapsulator since this is a surface rust. The Converter is designed to be used on severely rusted areas only.

FAQ's

Rust Encapsulator can be applied with the Undercoating System, but this application isn't recommended because Rust Encapsulator requires surface to be free of grease, oil, and loose rust. The best product to coat inside box sections is the Heavy Duty Anti-Rust (16017ZP). This waxy, oily product flows into pinch welds & through rust to seal surface from contact with moisture & air, but cannot be painted over so is only suitable for inside box sections that don't show. Use lacquer thinner for cleanup.
