Eastwood Black Rust Encapsulator - Paint Over Rust

Product Overview:

Description

Stop rust in its tracks! Rust Encapsulator is the easiest way to stop and prevent rust and corrosion from spreading.

  • Superior durability (tested to 500 hours in a salt-spray chamber)
  • UV Resistance - a topcoat is not needed
  • Penetrates deeper to prevent rust from spreading or forming, even in hard-to-reach areas
  • Requires minimal prep and cures fast
  • Available in convenient spray aerosol or brush on quart and gallon sizes
  • Heat resistant to 400F
  • 2%-10% Gloss Level

Simply wire brush any loose rust, wipe with PRE painting prep to clean the surface and apply. Eastwood Rust Encapsulator has proven to be superior in UV resistance, preventing rust creep, and overall durability.

Eastwood Rust Encapsulator has been tested by an independent lab to be one of the most effective rust-preventive products yet. Rust Encapsulator is a great primer for floor pans and other underbody parts. It fills tiny pin-holes and surface irregularities, and is compatible with lacquer, enamel and urethane topcoats (including Eastwood Chassis Black). For the absolute ultimate rust remedy, first brush or spray-on Eastwood Rust Converter, then prime with Rust Encapsulator. One 15-oz. aerosol covers about 10 sq. ft., and contains no isocyanates. One Gallon covers about 160 Sq Ft. Heat-resistant up to 400°F. Made in the USA.

For Improved Protection check out Rust Encapsulator Plus and for ULTIMATE PROTECTION you will want to use Rust Encapsulator Platinum.

FAQs

(Q) Can Rust Encapsulator be applied with the Undercoating System?
(A) Technically, yes, but this application isn't recommended because Rust Encapsulator requires surface to be free of grease, oil, and loose rust. The best product to coat inside box sections is Internal Frame Coating or Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust . These products require minimal prep and will creep into seams and pinch welds.

Safety Information

Work in a well-ventilated area when applying this product. The use of a respirator is recommended. Shake aerosol vigorously for 2 minutes before spraying.

Accessories

In places where little or no surface prep can be done, our Internal Frame Coating or Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust (16017ZP) is actually a better choice for applying into blind areas such as box sections.

Application Tips

Use a wire brush to remove loose rust, scale and paint, and remove dust, grease and oil deposits. Wipe down with Pre Painting Prep (10041Z). Feather surrounding paint with 220-grit sandpaper. Shake can for at least 2 minutes once the mixing ball starts to rattle. Hold the Rust Encapsulator can 10-12" above surface as you spray. A single coat dries to the touch in 20 minutes, and is thoroughly dry in 3-4 hours at 68°F. For greater durability, a second coat can be applied 1 hour after the first. Allow 6-8 hours after the last coat before applying topcoat. Use over or under body fillers.

The Rust Encapsulator Quarts and Gallons can be sprayed right out of the can with a conventional HVLP spray gun with a 1.3 - 1.4 tip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent primer for cast iron radiators Eastwood rust encapsulator was the perfect product to prime my old cast iron radiators for a single stage urethane. The epoxy base gives it excellent adherence. The product goes on glossy but will dry to a very durable matte black finish. The product is holding up perfectly after a year of 200 degree temperatures. I don’t anticipate ever having to repaint these I used an Eastwood Concours LT100 HVLP Paint Gun to apply all products. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great on frames. I used this product on a frame off restoration of my Jeep. Over 50k miles later all my black paint looks great. I now use it as a primer for all my antique projects. Currently doing a 1952 Ferguson TO 30.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stuff Used this on my 65 engine bay where I had a mix of new and old metal with surface rust. Used a pint for the firewall, inner and outer aprons, radiator support, and frame rails. I was able to get a good two coats with 1 pint. Great coverage. Going to top coat with Eastwood chassis primer and paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Black rust encapsulator Prep the surface and it will bind very well. I like the satin sheen of the paint vs gloss. Flows well into all the crevices.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Black Rust Encapsulator Use to buy black in spray can on sale and they supposed to has shelf life of a year and I didn’t use them for 6 months and they hadn’t been open or used and shook twice as long but I’ve got around 5 or 6 cans that I barely got a little out and it was like tar trying to get out, hadn’t had that problem with red and they said if I had told or used in 3 months they would make it up so I’ve stopped getting as much stuff from Eastwood but I was wanting this in quart so I’ll be able to use

Questions & Answers

Roughly how much product would i need to encapsulate a 6.5 x 12 utility trailer with mesh sides…

Asked by: CGose
Thanks for your question: It is estimated your trailer is 78 sq ft.+ the mesh sides. We would recommend getting a gallon to ensure you have enough rust encapsulator to do the job right! One Gallon = 160 sq ft One Quart = 40 sq ft

I want to use Encapsulator on a set of rusty rear leaf springs and a rear axle on an old Mustang. The rust is heavy on the springs and not so much on the axle. Is it best to scrub it good with a wire brush, use ospho, then brush this on? Thoughts?

Asked by: John
Yes, this process would be a great option to proceed with. For more protection, I would recommend the use of either our Plus or Platinum Encapsulator instead of the Original.

Using the brush on Encapsulator Plus. Should I stir this or shake the can? Also, I plan to pour small amounts in a plastic container while painting. If I clean the lid, cover with plastic, install lid then store upside down, will that keep longer?

Asked by: Russ
You can stir or shake the can. Please use an approved container while painting. Cleaning the lid and seal area of the top of the can will help with proper sealing. We do not recommend storing upside down, that would be your decision if you choose. Store in dry temperate conditions. 65-75 degrees for best shelf life.

I have a floor plan that has some significant rust on it, but there is also factory paint in areas with no rust. Is this product ok to use to paint over the unrusted areas also?

Asked by: Chaos
Yes, this Encapsulator will work on properly prepped non rusted locations too! Just be sure to sand these areas well with about 320 grit, then clean with PRE painting prep before applying.

I plan on using a 1.5mm nozzle size spray gun to shoot Rust encapsulator. Is that a good size spray nozzle for this product?

Asked by: Wayne
It's been over 5 days and I never got an answer to my question. So, not having the time to wait around I decided to go for it. I used an Astro gravity feed spray gun with a 1.5mm nozzle. It's set up with a diaphragm regulator set at 30psi. There was no need to thin the rust encapsulator as it sprayed just fine right out of the can. Prior to spraying, I used red scotch Brite to scuff the EDP covering the AMD sheet metal then cleaned it all with pre-paint prep. The result was really, really nice. Smooth, total coverage that provided an excellent surface for the next step, spraying the entire area with gloss chassis black. I shot that by the way with a Black Widow spray gun with a 1.3mm nozzle at 25psi. That also came out great!

Can I paint epoxy primer over the rust encapsulator with out any issues?

Asked by: Steve
Yes, as long as the surface has been scuffed with a Scotch guard Pad (RED) and thoroughly cleaned with a paint prep.
