Pure Sine Wave Verses Modified Sine Wave

All power inverters convert DC power (which is power stored in batteries) to AC power, which is the power supplied by the electric company and fed to your home. Electronic devices need AC power to operate, but power inverters generally output power in two forms, modified sine wave vs. pure sine wave.

  • Pure sine is a direct replica of the power in your house, and it’s what all 110 Volt electronic devices are made to run on (i.e. anything with a 2 or 3 prong plug).
  • The more sensitive the device, the less likely it will work well on a Modified Sine. For example induction plates for cooking won’t run on Modified sine.

  • Newer devices such as camera batteries, air purifiers, computers, tablets, LED TV’s, power tools, etc. may be damaged over time when used on a modified sine wave.
  • Pure sine is more efficient. The best example is with boiling 1 cup of water in a microwave: on a pure sine it takes 1 minute, on a modified sine it takes 2. Using less energy means you can use more devices, or save money by installing less solar or batteries.
  • The biggest benefit is not having to replace sensitive gadgets on a semi-regular basis: Laptop Battery $140; Laptop Charger $80; Milk Frother $100; AA Rechargeable Batts $15

Pure sine wave power flows in even, arching waves, whereas modified sine wave power flows to your devices in chunky, square waves. The square waves are giving power to your device “all or nothing,” so to speak. Your device will run properly, or not. The power is coming through in a less seamless fashion. Gaining power that is flowing in modified sine waves does not come through as clean and efficient—it doesn’t flow to the device as “pure.” The devices will get the power they need to operate, but when it comes to devices like fans, TV’s, radios and lights, they will tend to buzz, as they are running a bit “hotter,” due to the way power flows to them.

**For optimal results use with a minimum of 80 amp battery**

Rated 5 out of 5 by from RV power for boondocking Installed in our camper as a power source for running a small TV, charging cell, pad and computer batteries and for running the fridge while underway. Our 2007 Dometic fridge draws around 350 watts/3 amps @ 120vac from the inverter and is safer than running LP for the fridge while towing. It draws around 30 amps @ 12vdc with its small duty cycle, and the truck a!t can easily supply this. While boondocking, we have two portable 50 watt solar panels as a folding standalone kit that we place in the sun 50 feet away to charge the two deep cycle batteries. This little 1000 watt inverter has been flawless so far. I also added a shunt and meter to keep track of how much power I am using. The price, fast shipping, (4 day free shipping and $10 off for a new customer) is unheard of for a sine wave inverter at any price. We will see how it goes and will update after a few months of use. Rated 4 out of 5 by from I like it Am using this with a backup solar system with charge controller. Probably not the best choice because the low voltage alarm and cut out are really too low. However I'm using a separate alarm that is adjustable so that for me is not an issue. Otherwise the unit seems very well constructed, has good heft and performs as it should. The remote is very convenient. Delivery was fast and the packaging was superior protecting the device very nicely in shipping.. This is my first dealing with Eastwood and I'm extremely impressed. I studied inverters extensively, was leery about buying one from a tool focused business selling only one house brand but it's all worked out great so far.

I want this to hook up to a deep cycle car battery to run my cpap machine while camping. Will this work for me. Does the unit come with cigarette adapter? If not, then what cables do I need.

I ran my airsense 10 autoset on a 750 watt cheaper Walmart for about 8 hours and then ran my soclean to clean it and it only drew the battery down about 1.2 volts. So this one should be way more than enough power for your CPAP plus being pure sine it would be a lot better for it mine was modified.

Will this unit operate an oxygen concentrator that draws 3 amps?

I have to disagree with the first answer. A 1000 watt inverter must be rated at 1000w / 120v = 8.3A, not 2.1 A. Otherwise it'd be useless. I am purchasing one to run the exact same concentrator.

I have a 1500 watt electric heater however it automatically goes down to 750 to save energy, plus I only use it on low. Would a 1000 inverter work with it? I will be hooking to a marine battery and continuous solenoid for use in my SUV.

If the unit has the ability to pull 1500 watts it might need that to start. We would recommend our 2000 watt inverter for this task.

Whether you have two 6 volt batteries wired in series to produce 12 volts or a single 12 volt battery the output will be the same from the inverter.

With an inverter the biggest thing is to check the wattage pull of the units you will be powering to ensure they are less than the rated out put. On this unit the output is 1000 Watts.
