Questions & Answers

General question, is media graded like sandpaper with the lower size say 50 grit being larger in size than 70 grit?

Asked by: Kerry 47
Yes that is correct, the higher the number the finer your media will be.

What is the best grit for prepping aluminum parts for powder coat? I would think 90 is too aggressive.

Asked by: Gary
320-400 would be more than adequate.

I want to know what is the correct sand grit or blast media use for metal? And also for alloy, example tire rims, crankcase etc, as prep for powder coating? And i have also 13 cfm @ 145 psi compressor, 150 liters tank, is this ok for sand blasting ? Thank

Asked by: Ianbags28
It all depends on the type of metal and application. Please email us at Techelp@eastwood.com and we would be more than happy to explain this to you in more detail.

What size nozzle does this take

This depends on the blaster you're using but generally a 2-5mm nozzle will work perfectly.

I am wanting to blast only a truck frame. How many bags would you recommend? I may not be able to collect/reuse any of the material.

Asked by: juliet76
We would recommend 2-3 bags for a frame, keep in mind though this is just an estimate for a starting order. Using a large tarp will help you collect and reuse this media.

This is an add on to my previous question. If the media is reusable then how do you recommend recollecting the media after it is blasted? Is it smart to run it through a sifter to remove any dirt or other contaminates before reusing it?

Asked by: Hunter M
If using a cabinet- we recommend our Dust collection system: http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-dust-collection-system-for-blast-cabinets.html. You would definitely want to sift through the media before using to remove any contaminants.

I want to blast an entire old muscle car. How far does a 50lbs bag go and who many will I need to go the whole car?

Asked by: Hunter M
Since these media's are reusable we usually recommending starting off with 3 bags since you will inevitably loose some media.

I was told not to use aluminum oxide for items I'm going to powder coat, because it leaves a residue that is very difficult to remove. Any comment to that?

Asked by: Barton Powder
You can certainly use Aluminum Oxide for powder coating parts. After Powder coating you wipe the piece down with PRE paint prep or Acetone to remove any existing contaminants or residue before applying your powder coat and baking.

What kind of finish does it leave on metal? Is it rough, smooth, satin looking etc?

Asked by: billjr
The profile left behind is depends on the type of metal you are blasting. This media will leave a much rougher surface on aluminum than it would on steel. This leave the perfect texture on steel to powder coat over top of.

Is this media suitable for use in the pressurized pot blaster set ups? If so, would you recommend the 60 grit or the 90 grit?

Asked by: Quiveringfish
You can certainly run this product in one of the pressurized blasters. The grit selection is up to you for what substrate you are blasting.
