Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little plasma cutter I absolutely love it. I am using it on a dedicated 20 amp breaker. I am cutting 1/8 plate steel. I have not tripped the breaker yet even after about 12 inches of cutting. You have to go slow but it produces a nice clean cut. Sometimes the slag holds the piece in place and you can snap it off or just go over it again. I have cut about 15 feet worth of 1/8 plate steel and I am still on my first nozzle but I will have to change it soon. I will say that I’m using very dry air on a 6 gallon pancake air compressor. The compressor produces more than enough air. I am running the air through a water separator and then I am using a small desiccator before the air enters the plasma cutter. I have not needed to change the desiccant (about 3oz of silica gel) yet but it is still spring so still cool temperatures an low humidity. This plasma cutter went on sale shortly after I bought it and it was a great buy. This is not for a big shop but if you only have 120volts and you want to cut 1/8 and thinner it is a great machine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect home/recreational plasma cutter Cuts sheet metal great, used it to cut and modify body panels easily. Sets up in seconds and is lightweight and portable. The consumables kit is also a great addition to have. I will probably never cut anything thicker than 1/8” so for my purposes this thing is PERFECT.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect plasma for light jobs Perfect for sheet metal. First project was cutting up an old air compressor tank and it handled it no problem. Managed to go through the welds too which were about 1/4 inch thick.

Questions & Answers

What is the minimum amp breaker required for this unit

Asked by: Scooter 63
We recommend a 20A.

Looking for compatibility with a ArcDroid CNC and understand it is low freq start. The other requirement they list is the cutter requires with 50:1 divided voltage output. Does the 20 support that? I already have this and love it but lost my paperwork.

Asked by: HomeyHD
This does not have a direct 50:1 output, unfortunately.

Do I let the torch the metal while cutting? Or should I leave a small distance?

Asked by: Edgar
You can use it either way.

Describe. Blow back

Asked by: Fred k
Blow back, aka low frequency, start creates an arc by air pressure pushing the nozzle and electrode apart a small distance as power is delivered to the electrode. This is in contrast with high frequency start where the nozzle and electrode are a fixed distance apart and the arc is created by the high frequency technology jumping the small air gap. Comparing the two is similar to comparing lift-start TIG and high frequency start TIG.

Is this considered a high frequency start plasma cutter

Asked by: Mellow
No, this machine has a low frequency start, also known as blow back start.

What size air compressor do I need to run this item

Asked by: 70 amc amx
This plasma cutter requires 3 CFM @ 30psi. The typical 1.5HP 10 gallon air compressor should keep up alright. The air demands is not high.

Is this strong enough to cut out small areas on my 74 beetle?

Asked by: ShaunS
Probably, this can cut anything up to 1/8" thickness easily.

Does the 20 have the same type arc start up as the 40 ? And how long can you cut with this unit cranked up? Will it cut thru paint ok?

Asked by: Restodude
This machine has a low frequency start, also known as blow back start. The Versa Cut 40 is a high frequency start system. We apologize for any confusion. The duty cycle is 40% @ 15A, the maximum output of the unit. This means when cutting within a 10 Minute block of time you can cut for 4 Minutes with 6 Minutes of cooling time allowed for the cutter. Exceeding duty cycle may cause the plasma cutter to indicate it is overloaded and requires an extended period for cooling. Ideally, paint and surface contaminants should be removed for best performance. However, it may burn through light paint and corrosion as long as the ground clamp is on good bare metal.
