Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spray like a Pro I bought the Earlex 5500 for the sole purpose of respraying my 1988 Pontiac Trans Am. I used Tremclad (Rust-o-leum) thinned with lacquer thinner. Used the viscosity cup supplied to make sure that the paint was up to par and after prep I used this bad boy to lay down a few coats. Let me tell you, easy peasy. There is literally next to no over spray from this thing. Unlike using a traditional HVLP gun with a compressor....my garage was not engulfed in a cloud of paint. I have to say 99% of the product landed on the car and stayed where it should. Only complaint I have is the vacuum like hose. Tends to get caught up on things, flop around and well it did hit the car a few times while painting. Probably my fault but whatever this thing definitely did what it was supposed to do and even though I used an oil based paint, cleanup was simple and easy. 5 Stars all around. Awesome product would recommend to a friend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from will work with lacquer Three years ago (late 2015), I purchased this product, with the made of plastic sprayer, and the metal sprayer as an accessory. I use it for Dupli-Color premixed lacquers. Even with the 2.0 tip, I got great results. A 1.0 tip is available from Earlex, but I think the 1.5 is capable of fine results. I do wet sand between built up coats, and finely wet sand the final clear coat before hand rubbing, and then a final machine polish. The only drawback is: the turbine produces an air temperature of about 70 degrees F, and on a humid day, the paint can fog a bit (lacquer). This is easily removed if you wet sand between coats or at least before the clearcoat, or just rub out the final coat.

Odd question but what is the noise/sound level of this machine while running? I'm using a large compressor setup and the noise interferes with our office staff.

I need to refinish some truck and trailer frames. Typically I use Rustolem products and thin with laquer thinner. I would like a high volume unit. It doesn't need to be automotive finish quality, it just has to lay down a substantial product

As long as you aren't expecting a high quality which a system such as the Apollo Turbine systems, this turbine will work for the application in reference.

I'm a little confused by some of the responses. Can this handle a complete auto paint job with primer, urethane base and clear? Thanks!

This turbine set up was really designed for small jobs such as cabinetry or furniture. We would not recommend it to be used to spray an entire vehicle. If you attempt this you would have to spray panel by panel- which usually yields nonuniform results (especially if painting a metallic finish).

Technically yes, but it wont yield the best results. This was originally sold for more thicker coatings such as the Elastiwrap and Plasti-dip we used to carry.
