Simply add the media and hardware into the bowl and switch the unit on. For even better results, use with liquid additives such as our Eastwood Rust Dissolver to really remove rust and corrosion with ease. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Time Saver I purchased the 5 Lb Tumbler and was happy to see how well it worked. Then there was a little disappointment. The plastic knob separated from the serrated screw portion. I contacted Eastwood and along with the knob a whole bowel was sent as a replacement. Here is what I learned after receiving the new bowel. The center bolt is too long. I went to my local Homie Depot and purchased 3 more rubber gaskets and 2 washer. I put two rubber washer sandwiched between the metal washers and the same on top of the bowel along with the wing nut instead of the plastic knob. Now 2 days later its working great! I let it run over night in the garage on the floor and it did its job as advertised. Prior to the little adjustment with the rubber washers is was a bit noisy. Now I barley hear it!!. Since most of my parts are small I think I’ll purchase another so that I don’t have to clean out the bowel to change cleaning media.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good product I like the ability to get replacement media, bowls ect. it is a problem at other stores. Put your items in and let it run sometimes 24 hours does a great job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from worked great Got this to use on some rusty nuts and bolts. I used the rust dissolver on them first then placed them in the tumbler. Let it run for a couple of hours while I was outside doing other chores. Came back in to clean bolts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works good but use some adjustments by the factory 1- it should say “ don’t run this for more that 5 hours at a time. The heat transfers from the motor, through the center screw and the plastic knob gets very hot. 2- the center bolt is too long and you have to use 2-3 washers prior to tightening the plastic knob or the bowl will spin. ( previous review experienced the same thing) Other than those 2 issues seems to work pretty good. At this point I have onl6 used the green media, let’s see how the dry shine media works and I’ll get back to ya. It seems I’ll still have to polish everything with a buffing wheel, but we’ll see.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 5lb tumbler Great tool, just make sure the lid is on tight. Had to add an additional nut to the lock down of the lid.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good, but not perfect I recently purchased the Eastwood 5 lb tumbler to clean up / refinish various auto fasteners. I would typically sand blast these and hit them with chassis black and figured I would give this a try. The motivation was that I could toss all the pieces in the tumbler and let them tumble over night. In typical fashion, the shipping was blazing fast and the unit is well built. I tumbled various fasteners and pieces. The unit does produce good results, but do not expect miracles. For heavily rusted parts, you are better off with a sand blaster. Parts should also be completely de-greased as the unit does not seem to effectively remove softer "gunk". I do feel the images used to advertise this unit are a bit misleading. I did get some parts to "shine up" like in the images, but these were in rather decent shape to begin with. The unit is also a bit loud, so I recommend letting it run over night. I found it very distracting running in my shop while I was actively working. Over all, a very good supplement to ones restoration arsenal, but it is not a "miracle machine". Expect to have to do some advance or post clean up of the pieces. In the example photo, the lug nut and socket wrench parts were tumbled for 24 hours with both the green cutting media and dri shine. The two pieces on the right were tumbled for 24 hours with the green cutting media only. Again, very good unit as a supplement to ones restoration arsenal, but not a miracle worker.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent Results Used this for the front suspension hardware on my '65 Thunderbird. After running for 24 hours (dry), the green media did a pretty good job. Ran for another 24 hours (dry) using the corn cob media and the nuts & bots polished up quite a bit. I probably would have acheived better results if I added in rust encapsulator, but I'm not building a show car - Just want the hardware to be presentable, which this tumbler did exactly that. It would be nice if Eastwood would provide a sample of rust encapsulator within this kit. Its a bit loud when running, but thats to be expected. Not a 100% perfect result, but it beats using a wire wheel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 5 lbs parts tumbler Works well but be patient and give it time to do the work. It sure beats using a wire brush on a grinder. I don't miss having parts ripped out of vise grips and thrown across the shop only to spend next 1/2 hour looking for them. I have used silca sand with the green pyramids this helps speed up the cleaning time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cleans well, but makes a fair bit of noise. The unit was a Christmas gift and has seen several hours of usage already. Cleans well (if a bit loudly) but learnned to be cautios as it cleaned the size etchings off of my taps and dies that were run throuh her.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replacement one works great.... The first one died right away, seemed like the bearings/motor seized as it would only hum when turned on. They sent a replacement without any hassle and the replacement one is still working fine. This will be the first Eastwood branded product that has failed and the customer service was perfect as expected.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value Does just what I bought it to do. I had a bunch of grimy bolts from a motor tear down and bought the tumbler to help me clean them up. With the additive, it cleans parts up as well as could be expected. I recommend!
Date published: 2015-05-19
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cleans up parts well The tumbler cleans up loose parts well. The first one I got quit working after about being used 3-4 times for a total run time less than 12 hours. Eastwood sent me a replacement, no questions asked. I have had no problems with the replacement tumbler.
Date published: 2015-05-08
Rated 4 out of 5 by from not a bad unit A good value with or without the media. Decent action though a little noisy. Lock nut that holds the bowl in place should be replaced with a wing nut for easier bowl removal. Turning entire unit upside down to empty is just asking for . The ny-lock nut is slow to remove

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product Good Product. Removes rust well. Its not perfect, i purchased this product to be used as part of a multistep process to electroplate parts. Bath in degreaser, then evaporust, then green media, then corncob media, then electroplate. This system works well. This will not remove leftover locktight from bolt threads, it will not magically turn your old parts to brand new parts but it does a really good job. If you want perfection you will need to break out the wire wheel before polishing. It does save time when you have many small parts that need polishing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Annoying but useful Overall does what it should do. The problem is with the knob that holds the cover on the hopper. The threaded brass insert separated from the plastic knob and I was unable to unscrew it without destroying the plastic. Also, It vibrated loose the first couple times I used it. This caused the hole in the lid to get elongated. Hand tightening isn’t good enough. It needed a pair of pliers to secure it. Also, the rubber gasket around the top of the hopper comes off every time it gets opened. Not a dealbreaker but annoying.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worked Great but Destroyed Itself The Good: The tumbler worked beautifully. I put in a bunch of really nasty rusty bolts and hardware and it cleaned them up beautifully. It works exactly like they say it will. The key is to use liquid in with the bolts and media and then give it plenty of time to work. The Bad: The unit basically destroyed itself during the first use. I'm really disappointed. The root problem is that the washer they send to secure the top has a slightly too large hole. The result is that it vibrates and compresses the plastic knurled knob. This creates too much slop and then it starts stripping the shaft and nut while damaging the lid. This all could have been prevented had I realized the problem before using it. After the first use I added a smaller washer so that the metal from the inside of the knurled knob is riding on the washer and the problem is solved. Unfortunately but that point my shaft had been destroyed and the unit was really damaged. I'm disappointed because this unit was SOOOO close to being awesome.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not too bad After only using this once I had to adapt the knob so that it would hold securely also had to reattach the lid seal and the brass feral that holds the knob. Once I had done this it worked quite well.
Date published: 2017-06-18
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Too High Quality The first time I used this tumbler, the lid popped off, causing the lid, and media to fly out, along with the items inside. I had to really torque down the top lid screw, and had to add a small dab of blue lock tight to prevent the lid from vibrating off. After 7 hours of vibrating, my rusty bolts did not appear to be too clean , in comparison to the advertised photos.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not impressed the wing nut broke on the first use and the top came off. I lost 3/4 of the dryshine media and two rare coins. i have completly turned my shop upside down and decided to order two new coins. I have had one of youtr tumblers since the 1990's and obviuosly the quality of this one is sub zero

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not impressed Thought it would save me from the wire wheel. Followed instructions with rust cutting green pyramid and had smooth rusty bolts after 24 hours. It does not do what there vidio shows. I'm back to the wire wheel, maybe it will polish them after that. This was not a good time saving investment.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Had to reassemble for correct operation The chamber literally rotated when the motor was activated. After taking the whole thing apart, I was able to reassemble it (with something like the right torque on the screws) and now it appears to work. Eastwood staff were not helpful.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't Last long Used my tumbler for the third time over the last weekend, first two times worked awesome. loaded the tumbler with twelve half inch nut's to clean up, turned it on left for lunch, roughly 45-50 min later came back and it was smoking locked up. Not happy with it. Bought it about two years ago and haven't used it till this last weekend when I finally started on my restoration project.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The worst tumbler on the market This is hamds down the worst vibratory tumbler on the market. With less than three full cycles, no more than 50 hours of tumbling, the knob on the lid of my first 5 lb tumbler failed. I had to cut the knob off and ask Eastwood for a replacement. Of course the second lid did the exact thing, and this is with three dog tags made of titanium and less than 2 lbs of dry media!!!! Waaaaay under tge 5 lb max. There is absolutely nothing rugged or high quality about this tumbler, it is 100% garbage from top to bottom, amd Earwood knows it. I am a trained, certified machinist with more than 5 years running my owm shop. I have nwvwr encountered a tumbler this bad. Eastwood should be aahamed of themselves for selling this. Again, this is my SECOND brand new 5lb tumbler WITH THE EXACT SAME FAILURE UNDER NO REAL LOAD. You are an idiot if you buy this tumbler, plain and simple. The photos show how the brass insert came out of the piece of crap knob from China, causing the plastic lid to deform. Again, EASTWOOD KNOWS THEY ARE SELLING CRAP, and they do not csre one bit. Don't be a sucker like I was. I am a disabled veteran, three tours to Iraq as an Infantryman, and an HONORABLE discharge. It's too bad Eastwood has no honor whatsoever.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not last long and poor Eastwood support Bought the tumbler, didn't use it immediately. Started my project and tried to clean some bolts and nuts. Turned off the tumbler to check on the progress and the motor would not start. After some encouragement, the motor started. Checked again and the plastic handle had come off. Tried to use it with the inner bolt only, but the broken clasp came off and the media was scattered on the shop floor. Tried to secure the top again, turned on the tumbler, it did not start. Again some encouragement, the motor started and the tumbler bowl rotated freely. Contacted Eastwood; no repair, replacement or apology; offered 15% off the purchase of another tumbler.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The new tumblers are inferior I bought this tumbler in May of 2016, and had problems with the tumbler hold threaded handle stripping out. They sent me a new bowl, but not a new tumbler hold down handle. Now after less than two years the entire hold down threaded rod has come out of the base of the tumbler, and there is no way to fix it. The old Eastwood tumblers with the orange bowls were vastly superior prior to just honestly wearing out. The new ones are junk. Note that I didn't use this tumbler near as much, I restored some carburetor linkages and some hardware. The other tumblers restored the hardware for three entire British Sport Cars and a myriad of carburetor linkages.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does Almost Nothing The catalog leads you to believe that this will remove rust, paint, corrosion, coatings, etc. The first thing the instructions says is that paint must be removed ahead of time. If I have to wire-brush the paint off, why did I buy the tumbler? I put a few small items in the bowl with the green media and ran it for about 8 hours. The parts don't look a bit different, but it must be doing "something" because the green pyramids now have a brown coating of rust dust. Maybe if I added Eastwood's Rust Dissolver it would work better, but, if I have to soak the parts in rust dissolver, WHY did I buy the tumbler? I also bought a package of the "Brown Plastic Medium-Cut Pyramids". Maybe they'll work better, but I'm so dis-heartened that I don't care whether I try them or not. I guess I'll just go back to using carb cleaner and the bench-grinder wire brush to remove paint and rust, and use the tumbler for rifle cartridge casings.

Questions & Answers

I have an 18 lb unit I bought a while back. This is the first time I have tried to use it. I have some hardware I need to tumble. I did not purchase the metal wash, can I use straight water? I have lost my instructions

Asked by: Morris Paint
Yes, water can be added. It will increase your cutting action.

Is this tumbler appropriate for tumbling/polishing rocks, gemstones, and minerals?

Asked by: Timo
Since we only test on rusty automotive hardware we would not be able to say if it would work.

What kind of media and maybe a liquid solution would I need for isotopic finishing on small gears with small crevices

Asked by: Smithracer11
Unfortunately we have never tested our Tumblers to ensure such a finish. We simply tumble/vibrate rusted parts to clean them back up.

Can this tumbler polish parts made out of 304 stainless steel? I’m looking for something that is show quality in the end....

Asked by: My46Willys4x4
While the final media will polish the metal it won't give a high shine you would get with buff wheels and compounds.

Hello, I would like to smooth and polish led pellets used in a high end professional pellet air rifle. Would the 5 lb model work for this and which media is best? Thanks!

Asked by: LedWhacker
We have never tested any of our medias or tumbers on lead pellets. The Lead is most likely too soft and would be destroyed in a tumbler.

The manual says use enough water to wet the media and parts to be cleaned. Does that mean so the media and parts are in water, or just make them wet or dampen the media? I'm not getting decent results even after more than 24 hours, just sticky parts.

Asked by: BillD
You can adjust the amount of water to your usage specifications. Just make sure to keep in mind not to go over the weight rating of the tumbler.

I purchased this product and have been pleased with the results. My question is, can I use specific liquids in the tumbler and if so, what do you recommend as well as what media should I use? (I mainly use it for nuts, bolts and washers.) Thanks!

There are companies that sell additives for tumblers that could be added to the cutting medias.

You could certainly run brass bolts and nuts in this tumbler. You would want to use the DRI shine media for the best polished finish.

My bolts are sherardized. Which media would be the best to clean them up? Will this process remove the sherardized coating as well as the dirt and oil?

Depends on the media you use. You can use simply a corncob and liquid additive to remove the dirt and grime and not harm the coating.

How large of an item will fit in the tumbler?

Asked by: Bugnu
The Eastwood 5 lb. Vibratory Tumbler will accept pieces up to 7” long and 2” wide, however best results are achieved with numerous smaller pieces no larger than 3”. Be sure that no sharp edges or corners exist which can damage the interior wall of the bowl. This Tumbler is designed to accommodate a 5 lb. total load, wet or dry. Always fill the tumbler by weight, not by volume as it is very easy to overload the unit especially when using a wet solution. It is strongly advised to weigh the contents including the bowl, parts, tumbling media and liquid solution. NOTE: 1 pint of water = 1-1/4 lbs.
