Eastwood Black Rust Encapsulator - Paint Over Rust

Product Overview:

Description

Stop rust in its tracks! Rust Encapsulator is the easiest way to stop and prevent rust and corrosion from spreading.

  • Superior durability (tested to 500 hours in a salt-spray chamber)
  • UV Resistance - a topcoat is not needed
  • Penetrates deeper to prevent rust from spreading or forming, even in hard-to-reach areas
  • Requires minimal prep and cures fast
  • Available in convenient spray aerosol or brush on quart and gallon sizes
  • Heat resistant to 400F
  • 2%-10% Gloss Level

Simply wire brush any loose rust, wipe with PRE painting prep to clean the surface and apply. Eastwood Rust Encapsulator has proven to be superior in UV resistance, preventing rust creep, and overall durability.

Eastwood Rust Encapsulator has been tested by an independent lab to be one of the most effective rust-preventive products yet. Rust Encapsulator is a great primer for floor pans and other underbody parts. It fills tiny pin-holes and surface irregularities, and is compatible with lacquer, enamel and urethane topcoats (including Eastwood Chassis Black). For the absolute ultimate rust remedy, first brush or spray-on Eastwood Rust Converter, then prime with Rust Encapsulator. One 15-oz. aerosol covers about 10 sq. ft., and contains no isocyanates. One Gallon covers about 160 Sq Ft. Heat-resistant up to 400°F. Made in the USA.

For Improved Protection check out Rust Encapsulator Plus and for ULTIMATE PROTECTION you will want to use Rust Encapsulator Platinum.

FAQs

(Q) Can Rust Encapsulator be applied with the Undercoating System?
(A) Technically, yes, but this application isn't recommended because Rust Encapsulator requires surface to be free of grease, oil, and loose rust. The best product to coat inside box sections is Internal Frame Coating or Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust . These products require minimal prep and will creep into seams and pinch welds.

Safety Information

Work in a well-ventilated area when applying this product. The use of a respirator is recommended. Shake aerosol vigorously for 2 minutes before spraying.

Accessories

In places where little or no surface prep can be done, our Internal Frame Coating or Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust (16017ZP) is actually a better choice for applying into blind areas such as box sections.

Application Tips

Use a wire brush to remove loose rust, scale and paint, and remove dust, grease and oil deposits. Wipe down with Pre Painting Prep (10041Z). Feather surrounding paint with 220-grit sandpaper. Shake can for at least 2 minutes once the mixing ball starts to rattle. Hold the Rust Encapsulator can 10-12" above surface as you spray. A single coat dries to the touch in 20 minutes, and is thoroughly dry in 3-4 hours at 68°F. For greater durability, a second coat can be applied 1 hour after the first. Allow 6-8 hours after the last coat before applying topcoat. Use over or under body fillers.

The Rust Encapsulator Quarts and Gallons can be sprayed right out of the can with a conventional HVLP spray gun with a 1.3 - 1.4 tip.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Apply I purchased this to deal with the rust on a vintage carnival ride that I am restoring. Applying it was a much simpler process than most of the competing products on the market and no need for a topcoat is a bonus. Hopefully its long term performance is as good as its ease of application!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, easy to use product. Great product. Sprays very well through the gun. I have had issue with the rattle cans not spraying consistently but dries flat and and even. Seems very UV resistant as stuff that was painted 2-3 years ago isn't much lighter and flatter than freshly painted. Seems to do a good job holding back rust.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Spray cans don't spray well...splatters. Multiple cans sprayed at 72 degrees after shaking for the full two minutes plus some... Splatters and will not spray evenly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great stuff if you can get it out of the can The product works, but I have had no luck with the aerosol cans functioning properly. I have three cans that I can't use because the tips are clogged.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not keep Only buy what you need at the time of your project and understand it has only a 90 day warrantee. Has zero shelf life, Despite storing it in the tempeture controlled paint cabinet, it will not keep.

Questions & Answers

Got a frame that's not to bad on rust would I want to do the converter before encapsulator

Asked by: Aj1977
You put the Rust Encapulator right over the surface rust no need to use the convertor first. You just have to get all the loose rust, scale and paint and then clean up all the dust, grease and oil and then just paint it on.

Would this be a good application for metal siding that is starting to rust at the bottom? If so, can I paint over it to match the rest of the siding?

Asked by: mr16track
Yes, but our Platinum would be the best bet. This can be top coated but we can only technically guarantee with products that we sell. If applying other paints over- test on scrap metal first or on a small section.

I have a cargo trailer that’s roof has surface rust , will this product work and can it be rolled on instead of brushing ? Can I apply a Rustoleum white paint over it to reduce heat inside of trailer ? Should I use Regular rust encapsulator or Plusproduct

Asked by: Big B
Our Eastwood Rust encapsulator, and rust encapsulator Plus can be rolled on without issues. I would recommend a Foam roller for the best surface finish. White Rust oleum can be applied over this product once it is fully dry and cured, At least 24 hours in most applications. I would personally recommend our rust encapsulator plus because it has superior adhesion, film build, and corrosion protection.

I have some rust encapsulator from 5 years ago...never opened the quarts. Are they still good to use? Is there any shelf life to this paint?

Asked by: Drew
Over time sediments will always settle to the bottom of the can. If you can mix them back in smoothly it would be likely you wouldn't have an issue. We would still recommend applying to a scrap or test piece of metal first.

Can I use this on the keel of my boat--iron keel, and in fresh water. It will be underwater for for 6 months

Asked by: Sailer
We would not recommend this for the application in reference. Out of anything we have our moisture cure versions of the Encapsulator would be best- the Platinum or the Plus Encapsulator. However even these are really tested for automotive use only.

Can I put rust encapsulator over a little bit of filler? Then extreme chassis black primer. Then top coat with extreme chassis black

Asked by: Old pirate
Like any coating really- if applied directly over filler it will "sink" in. Its best to seal off the filler first.

Can rust encapsulation be applied over enamel paint? Over rust converter?

Asked by: JLee
Unfortunately, we can not guarantee compatibility between our products and products we do not sell. We would have to advise you to test a small area first or a scrap piece of metal. Furthermore, we would advise you to wait until the paint is fully cured and sanding prior to applying this over. This can absolutely be applied over the Rust converter.

There is surface rust that has started to spread on the frame of my cargo trailer. How well will this product hold up to UV when applied to the forward exposed areas of the frame? Will a topcoat of paint be required?

Asked by: PBJ417
This product is 100% UV stable and can be used as a stand-alone paint. However, our Chassis Black line of paints are great options for a durable topcoat for this product.

If I am going to paint over this product with the body color on my truck, what is the prep I need to do. Scuff and Paint?

Asked by: Jimmy
Please keep in mid we can only guarantee compatibility with the paints and coatings we sell. You will want to test a scrap piece of metal or small area first before applying another brand top coat over everything. This paint can be top coated as soon as 6-8 hours after applying it up until 24. After 24 hours has elapsed since applying this Encapsulator- it will have fully cured and would need to be sanded with 400-600 prior to top coating further.

What’s the curing process on it? And can I apply bed liner on top of it how long do I have to wait to add it , and do I have to scuff the encapsulator before applying it ? I would like to add it on too before it fully cures if I could without scuffing

Asked by: Maxmgm
Full cure for this product will be about 24 hours on average. This product can be used with the bed liner options that we sell but we can not guarantee compatibility with brands we do not sell- you would have to test this on your own. This product can be top coated without the need to sand 6-8 hours after applying your last coat of the Encapsulators.
