Rated 1 out of 5 by from Agree with first Review.. not good. The sanding bands leave a horizontal pattern on steel at the final finishing step! Not good... The expanding barrel seems to hard (hard rubber) to allow the sand paper of lay flat, and the sand paper bands wander off of the drum every few seconds because the fit is too loose (very frustrating). I originally thought they sent me the wrong bands, but I guess not. The other sanding barrels are great, but they also tend to wear out pretty quickly on steel projects, so make sure you buy a few of these at the beginning to ensure you can finish your project on time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for metal Used it to put a finish on aluminum plate. Not happy with the results. The sanding band is made from a strip of sand paper and glued together, similar to a paper towel tube. The glue joint creates a high spot. The hard rubber of the Expanding Drum does not allow for the high spot to press into the rubber, so it hits the metal creating a diagonal pattern. Had to use a finishing drum to remove the pattern, and obtain a consistent finish. Probably not an issue on other materials, but on any metal (aluminum, stainless, etc) don't even think about using this for a final pass. Also, getting the band on the Drum is a trick. No way to "compress" the drum to slip the band over it. The band needs to have a tight fit in order to maintain enough friction to rotate. Trying to compress the band with both hands while pulling down onto the Drum is tough, especially in the beginning when there is very little of the band on the Drum. Tried to hold the Drum in one hand, and slam the outer edge of the band against a workbench, repeatedly. It worked, but you better hit the band square on the workbench or it will kink the band; and it will get UGLY. I have no idea how to remove the band. May try leaving the Drum on the SCT and yank on the band. I will NOT be buying any more of the bands. The only thing the Expanding Drum is good for now is to act as a hand sander, which is does pretty well. ;-) I suggest Eastwood making the finishing drums in more grits. They leave a nice smooth finish. I will buy more of them.
