Duty Cycle

The rated Duty cycle refers to the amount of welding that can be done within an amount of time. The Eastwood MP140i has a duty cycle of 30% at 90 Amps. It is easiest to look at your welding time in blocks of 10 Minutes and the Duty Cycle being a percentage of that 10 Minutes. If welding at 90 Amps with a 30% Duty Cycle, within a 10 Minute block of time you can weld for 3 Minutes with 7 Minutes of cooling for the Welder.

If the Duty Cycle is exceeded, the Welder will automatically shut off, however the fan will continue running to cool the components. When a safe temperature has been reached, the Welder will automatically switch the Welder output back on. To increase the duty cycle you can turn down the Voltage Output control.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High quality welder Great welder. Perfect for auto body and general welding needs. Easy to set up and use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little welder This machine is really light weight. So far it has handled everything I've used it on currently running .030 Flux wire. It came with plenty of spare contact tips but it would be nice if they were a variety of sizes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Welder! I bought this little guy last week and have put mainly the mig function to the test. It lays down a nice bead on sheet metal (AK rifle receivers). Bought this to replace a recent stolen old Clarke I had from decades ago and man I'm kinda happy someone stole my old one lol. This rig does it all with style. Mig torch is very sensitive and I like that, don't have to squeeze the crap out of it to get it going like my old one! I was a little hesitant buying a welder online, but this thing is built nicely. Time will tell about longevity, but it has a 3 yr warranty so that's a plus. I've heard great things about these. This is my first tig unit so I'll be toying with that function soon! Get one you will not regret it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Metal feeding gears made the choice easy. Great deal at a great price. Very fast shipping . Perfect in every way and very happy in every way but you cant tig aluminum. My other welder i cant tig aluminum. You have to but the $380.00 spool gun to MIG aluminum. 100% my fault. Everything on their part was perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great portability! This is just what I needed to learn more about various types of welding. It’s been a long time and my skills are certainly lacking. The options of being able to stick weld and also use flux core when I need to grab it and take it somewhere for a quick repair is so easy due to its light weight. I also picked up a 75/25 bottle of gas for solid wire welding. I haven’t tried the Tig yet. Overall this is just a great little machine to have around your garage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mp140i Great entry level welder. No complaints yet. As expected, it struggles with thick materials so size up to mp200 if you can afford it. It’s nice how reinforced the shielding is around the mig torch lead so it won’t be ruined if someone steps on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Entry Point Excellent entry point for a beginner. Ive only done MIG so far and it worked well. Ask me again in 1 year. I had an experienced welder help me with set up. Only suggestion would be, a 220 1phase addon. Maybe that would raise the price though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eastwood MP 140i hit a home run!! After researching Multi Process Welders, I found the 140i covered everything I was looking for. I have used all the functions on it and found it to be very user friendly. Having some knowledge on the welding subject, it was not very difficult to get up and running immediately. The only issue I had was the instructional manual. It could have been a little more informative. But none the less, good job on the 140i Eastwood. I would recommend this Multi Process Welder to anyone from professional to amateur.

Questions & Answers

How do I calculate the amperage based on the voltage and wire speed settings? I am a little confused by the Duty Cycle Ratings.

Asked by: phreaktor
The duty cycle full details are printed on the bottom of the welder, but that label is a little confusing to look at if unfamiliar so here is what you're looking for: 30% @ 90A/18.5V MIG 30% @ 70A/22.8V Stick/TIG 60% @ 64A/17.2V MIG 60% @ 49A/22V Stick/TIG 100% @ 49A/16.5V MIG 100% @ 38A/21.5V Stick/TIG Note that these are under worst case conditions eg. extremely high ambient temperature, and will be higher in almost all real world scenarios.

If this requires a dedicated 20A service, what style of plug is on the welder? Does it have a standard NEMA 5-15P meaning it is only good for up to 15A? This is a little confusing.

Asked by: phreaktor
This welder does have a NEMA 5-15P plug, but it is rated up to 20A. Although this is technically incorrect, this is standard in our industry and among our competitors' units too.

I am planning to run this with a dedicated branch- 30A breaker, 10AWG service wire, two 100ft 10/3 SO extension cords with 30A RV plugs at each connection. Is this safe and can I ustilze full duty cycle at the max output of 140A? What's duty @ 140A?

Asked by: phreaktor
That sounds like quite the setup - I am not qualified to answer that question. I would reach out to a licensed electrician for that question, the unit needs about 20A in for maximum output. We do not have a rated duty cycle at 140A. The duty cycle rating is: 30% @ 90A MIG 30% @ 70A Stick/TIG 60% @ 64A MIG 60% @ 49A Stick/TIG 100% @ 49A MIG 100% @ 38A Stick/TIG Note that these are under worst case conditions eg. extremely high ambient temperature, and will be higher in almost all real world scenarios.

Is there anything I need to change to use .030 instead of the .023 wire?

You will need to make sure to install a 0.030" contact tip to the MIG gun and flip the drive roller to the 0.030"/0.035" position.
