Product Overview:

Description

Eastwood Gray Urethane Automotive Primer and Activator

Get ready for the final coat on new parts or autobody repairs with this gray 2K primer and activator combination. High-build urethane primer is a versatile surfacer that can be applied over bare metal, body filler, epoxy primer, existing paint and much more. Since the primer is sandable and fills imperfections as you spray, it’s great if you want to get an older surface perfectly smooth. The activator promotes adhesion for the primer and also helps it dry faster so you can get to painting.

Our 2-component gray automotive primer kit is an ideal all-around solution if you’re repainting an entire restored vehicle or running a professional shop. It’s made in the USA with excellent color holdout at temperatures up to 150 degrees A gallon of primer mixes 4:1 with the activator to create five sprayable quarts, which covers 140 square feet — more than enough for the average car or small truck. Eastwood provides lifetime tech support by phone or email to help you Do the Job Right.

Eastwood 4:1 Gray Urethane Primer Features:

  • Mixes 4:1 with 50241ZP Activator
  • Fills well and builds quickly
  • Dries fast and easy to sand
  • Apply over epoxy primer, body filler, existing finishes
  • Approximate Coverage Per Gallon: 140 SQ FT
  • Maximum operating temperature: 150 Fahrenheit
  • Made in the USA

It fills well, sands easily and provides excellent color holdout for all top coats. Mixes 4:1 with 50241 ZP catalyst. May be applied over Eastwood Epoxy primers, old paint, & body fillers. Ideal for block sanding in 3-4 hrs after application. When primer is mixed 4:1 with activator it makes 5 spray-able quarts. Primer is VOC 4.8 lbs per gallon.

This product can not be shipped to California

If you're sanding primer or body filler you have to check out the Eastwood Elite Contour DSB Dustless Sanding Block System that gives you laser straight panels while keeping you and your shop clean because it eliminates 95% of the sanding dust.

MIXING RATIO

After shaking/stirring primer, thoroughly mix four parts 2K Urethane Primer Sur - facer with one part Urethane Primer Activator

Option

To reduce film build, 4:1 mixture may be cut by up to 20% with a urethane-grade reducer. Doing this may also improve the flow and leveling of primer. Eastwood suggests using a Zero-VOC reducer to avoid potential compliance issues. Use caution in mixing materials as epoxy primer may begin to gel after approximately two hours (at 70 °F).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great primer, but a little thick. Great primer/filler. For me, it sprayed a little thick, even with a 2.0 tip in the gun. I simply added thinner for a total of a 4:1:1 ratio. Fills and sands very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product Mixes well, sprays well. Might need to thin it a bit as it gummed up on my spray gun a little, but nothing I couldn't wipe off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great products I have yet to use it. In the past the product lays down nice. I like using all your paint products very satisfied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Primer application with helpful tip This primer worked well but it’s important to thin it with reducer. I am not a professional painter at all and first tried to spray just primer and hardener through a 1.7 mm gun. Before I reduced it the primer came out very splotchy. After I mixed in the reducer however it worked great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2K primer performance and ease of operatio The 2K primer is top notch, it really made the difference in the restoration of my kei truck finish and I will be seeking other products to support my hobby painting and restoration addiction. The product is reasonable by comparison and does a great job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use Primer/surfacer Very satisfied with this primer surfacer, goes on well (although it could use a little reducer in addition to the activator.). Covers well and sands easily. Great for overall refinishing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mixing instructions are wrong for tip size. Mixed 4:1:1 reducer. Sprayed with 1.7 tip at 30psi at gun. Eastwood Concourse gun. Sprayed very nice, and covered well. too thick without reducer.
Date published: 2022-06-19
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thick Primer Really like how it builds up thick to level parts. Hate spraying it speaking for me though. You have to use larger nozzle cause it's thicker which drains my air compressor fast. So you either wait for air or keep spraying and the surface which turns out rougher and smaller fan. Easy mixing.
Date published: 2021-09-17
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thick Very thick make sure you have a larger tip. I sprayed with a 1.7 tip and had to add reducer so I did a 4-1-1 ratio and it sprayed ok then.
Date published: 2021-06-18
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good hi build but costly I've been using this on high end auto restorations. Pros: Dries quick, sands well including feathered edges, and builds quick. Cons: Eastwood's premium price for a rebranded product. My next project is a repair, not a restoration so I will be trying other less costly brands.

I sprayed my whole bare metal car in Eastwood epoxy primer. After the bodywork the car is a mix of epoxy primer, some bare metal + filler. I plan on applying 2 more coats of Epoxy, then this Urethane primer 45 minutes later, then block sand. Sound right?

Asked by: tommya
Apply over Eastwood Epoxy primer after sufficient flash time (30 minutes for 1 mil., 45-60 minutes for thicker film builds). If waiting more than five days after application of epoxy, be sure to abrade surface prior to application of 2K Urethane Primer Surface.

Asked by: Wause
Depending on the surface after primer. 600 to 800 Grit 600 to 800 Grit – This sandpaper grit range is perfect for sanding surface imperfections in the primer, prior to paint application. It is recommended to start at the low grit end and work your way up to 800 grit. 1000 to 1200 Grit – When you need to remove base coat imperfections, this grit range will do the job.

I'll be using epoxy primer 1st, then this urethane primer, my question is can I spray acrylic enamel over this ? I was going to have my factory color mixed at napa

Asked by: Kenny
Unfortunately we can not guarantee compatibility between our products and products/ brands we do not sell. Our paints are Acrylic Urethane based and this is all we test with. If you still wish to try this then we have to recommend trying on a scrap piece of metal first or a small inconspicuous area before applying liberally to the surface.

The instructions say 25-30 psi “spray pressure”. Normally a “at the tip” pressure is given. Could you be more specific in your directions?  Is 25-30 an at the tip pressure?  Seems high…

Asked by: Timm
25-30 PSI is the pressure the regulator attached to the bottom of the paint gun. This should yield about 8-10psi exiting the air cap.

An answer to a previous question is that this urethane primer can be sprayed over fiberglass. Would a sealer then be recommend over this primer?

Asked by: chpjr
Yes, this can be used on fiberglass surfaces. A sealer is only required if you plan on leaving this primer exposed to moisture or humidity before you get around to sealing it off with your top coat. If this is needed we recommend using our Epoxy primer (mixed 1:1 with its catalyst) and then reducer by 20% with Urethane reducer.

can urethane primer be thinned out to be used as a sealer? if so can it be tinted? what is suggested to tint it with?

Asked by: yeah dawg
Yes, this can be. You would mix this at the 4:1 ratio it calls with the catalyst/activator then reduce that by 20% with any of our Urethane reducers. This can not be tinted or mixed with anything other than more of our same 4:1 Urethane primer.
