Product Overview:

Description

  • Choose a fast, medium or slow Low-VOC Activator
  • Makes 5 sprayable quarts
  • Clearcoat is required on basecoat paints
  • Mixes 4:1 with your activator choice
  • Approximate coverage: 160 SQ FT
  • Flake/Pearl Particle size: 10-60 microns
  • Max Temperature: Paint will handle up to 300 degrees without delamination, but color shift may occur, so it should not be used in a high heat setting

  • A scotching hot ruby red with a modern metallic effect

Basecoat Paint Kit is a low-VOC system, so it meets regulatory limits in highly-regulated areas, eliminating the need to switch to a waterborne system.

Specifications

BASECOAT PAINT MIXING RATIOS

Thoroughly mix four parts Low-VOC Urethane Basecoat with one part Low-VOC Urethane Activator. Use Fast (50308ZP) for small jobs, or temps below 75°F; Medium (50309ZP) for small jobs, or temps between 70-85°F; or Slow (50310ZP) for large jobs, or temps above 80°F. Keep in mind, other factors, such as humidity, air flow and total film thickness should also be considered. In many situations, it will be useful to add 10%-20% 50104ZP Zero-VOC Reducer to aid sprayabliity, flow and leveling. Remember, this is an activated basecoat system; only mix as much as is needed. Pot life is about 2 hours at 70°F.

PAINT GUN SET-UP

HVLP Gun: Fluid Tip 1.2-1.4 mm Inlet Spray Pressure 8-10 psi
Conventional Gravity: Fluid Tip 1.2-1.5 mm Inlet Spray Pressure 40-50 psi
Conventional Siphon: Fluid Tip: 1.3-1.6 mm Inlet Spray Pressure 40-50 psi

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Apply Low-VOC Urethane Basecoat color in two full medium wet coats with a consistent 50% overlap pattern. Allow five to ten minutes flash time between coats. Flash time should increase if additional coats are applied. Most colors will cover in two coats. A third and final coat may be applied to set even metallic pattern. If required, apply this light coat immediately after the previous full wet coat, moving the gun with faster passes, from further away. Mist basecoat onto the wet film until the metallic pattern is uniform.

Basecoat should dry dust-free within 10-20 minutes. May be lightly sanded in as few as 20 minutes. Wait at least 30 minutes before wet sanding. Wait 45-90 minutes before taping on the fresh film. All dry times are approximate, at 70°. Temperature, air flow, total film thickness and other variable may extend these times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks good First time painting a car, turned out pretty good, had some orange peel in the clear, but I got most of it out with a cut and buff. Its dark red in the shade and bright sparkly in the sun. Get compliments on the color all the time. Have a fiberglass hood and fender flares I have to paint so just waiting for it to come back in stock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ruby is correct. The base coat turned out gorgeously. It sprays easily on both horizontal and vertical surfaces with no drips. The only caveat is that you have to be very careful not to rub against it before you clear coat or it'll leave a variation in color compared to the area around it. I accidentally brushed the car with the hose for the gun, and I ended up misting that area with the detail gun to put a light coat so the color evened out. This paint sparkles in the sunlight with a 4 coats of clear. You won't see the true beauty until you've got at least 3 coats of clear and have color sanded. The clear creates a medium for the light to bounce around off the metallic particles, and it'll appear dull and flat until the compounding is done. I noticed that wax brought out a warmth and depth to the color as well. The final color is a deep red natural ruby or garnet. I've painted my '66 Mustang with it and accented with black trim on the rockers and a black interior trimmed in chrome, steel, and billet aluminum. Everyone goes "wow!" when they see it. The color really looks good with chrome and black trim pieces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hot Rod Flat over Red Molten Metallic First car I have painted. Still putting her back together. This paint went on easy. I gave my old ford three coats of Eastwood Red Molten Metallic over three coats of Eastwood Black Epoxy Primer and finished off with two coats of Eastwood's Hot Rod Flat. The gun I used was the Devilbliss 670 from Eastwood. I would recommend this paint!!

Questions & Answers

Im looking to paint my 73 Chevelle. What size spray gun tip is recommended for this metalic paint. I currently have a devilbiss with a 1.3 tip. Will that work? and what about the clear?

Asked by: Woody
The 1.4mm tip is ideal for primers and metal coatings because the droplet size allows the particles to be oriented automatically, thereby eliminating streaks and spots. In order to spray clear coating on small parts and items, we recommend using 1.2mm nozzles. For the spraying of the entire car, a 1.3mm nozzle is recommended

Hello,What would the shelf life be for this paint when stored in a climate controlled enviroment?

Asked by: benjamin88
If unmixed, sealed and stored in a temperature controlled environment then we will warranty this for 90 days from the purchase date. Shelf life would be about 1-2 years on average from purchase if stored accordingly.

I'm looking to paint my Datsun the same color that Mazda is putting on their modern cars. It has a certain metallic look to it and it looks to be this color is there any way that you could verify that this is the right color or if not what is the right.

Asked by: Steve
Unfortunately, our paint arrives to us premixed and prepackaged. It is manufactured for us and we do not have the ability to match or cross reference any names, codes, makes, models, years etc. We apologize for any inconvenience this may create.

With this base coat how long before covering with clear coat and should it be abated before clear coat

Asked by: Edward
You simply need to wait about 45 min prior to clear. No sanding needed. It becomes a wet on wet application.

I want to paint an ‘83 Suburban, jambs and all,how much paint will I need?

Asked by: Briano
You will definitely need at least 2 gallons to cover a vehicle like this and all the areas reference. We would strongly recommend getting a 3rd gallon to be on the safe side though.

Is the Eastwood Color Chart a true representation of the color? It seems to differ from your online photographs. Also, is the color consistent gallon to gallon?
