Eastwood Rust Converter

Product Overview:

Description

Instead of throwing out rusted automotive parts that you know will be hard to replace, use Eastwood Rust Converter to restore their performance. This acidic paint is formulated for panels and parts that have heavier rust but still are structurally intact. By spraying or brushing Rust Converter on the surface, you trigger a chemical reaction that turn residual rust into more stable iron oxide. It also forms a paintable black protective coating that is compatible with most topcoats. Last but not least, Rust Converter seals the metal to help prevent future corrosion.

Use rust converting treatment as part of a complete restoration process that gets your barn find back on the road. Our formula penetrates the metal quickly and doesn’t require any sanding. Since the paint is water-based, it’s much safer than traditional solvents. The Eastwood Garage has much more information about Rust Converter, including when to use it versus other anti-rust solutions (such as Rust Encapsulator ). Extend the life of your vehicle by doing the job right with a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee.

  • Rust Converter stops residual rust, and turns it into a black, protective, ready-to-paint coating, without sanding. Just apply to transform the rust
  • Penetrates faster than other brands
  • No sanding needed - just apply to transform rust
  • Coverage: 50 square feet per quart
  • No mixing needed
  • 90 Day Warranty

Eastwood's own high-tech formula converts rust into a protective polymeric coating that's ready to go as a primer, and is compatible with most top coats. That new protective coating will also seal the surface against moisture to prevent future rust growth.

Our customers have told us about a lot of different uses for this versatile product. Available in an aerosol spray or liquid containers, this rust converter will help you either restore or maintain your project vehicle. Contact us today by phone or email, and we'll answer your questions about whether this handy product can help your situation.

This high-tech formula halts residual rust in its tracks and converts it into a black protective polymeric coating that eliminates the need for sanding. The converted protective coating is a suitable primer, and is compatible with most top coats. Simply remove loose rust with a wire brush, then apply Eastwood’s Rust Converter. Allow to dry, then top coat it with a quality coating, such as Eastwood’s Chassis Black. Single component; no more mixing.

Application Tips

Eastwood Rust Converter must be applied over heavy rust. If there is no rust present, there will be nothing for the product to react with and adhere to. You will only see it convert rust in the areas where rust is present.

The surface should be clean and dry before application of Rust Converter. If moisture is present or the surface is damp, it can cause the product to dry milky white or not adhere to surface.

When preparing the surface, it is important not to take it down to the bare metal. If this occurred, a metal primer is needed in place of the rust converter. To prepare the surface, remove loose particles of rust and debris with a wire brush or rag. Remove any grease, oil, or salt residue using PRE. Please note that any residue left on the surface will interfere with the adhesion of the product.

Eastwood Rust Converter should be stored in a cool dry place, protected from freezing or temperatures above 100 degreesF. Optimum results are obtained when the surface temperature and the product are between 50 degreesF and 95 degreesF. Do not apply if the surface temperature is below 50 degreesF as it will take longer for the product to react and form a hard surface. This can also cause the product to dry milky white or not fully adhere to the rust. If the temperature of the surface is significantly higher than 95 degreesF, it can cause some of the components to evaporate too quickly and interfere with adhesion.

Application — It is important to apply a thin coat first and allow it to dry before applying a second coat. Allow the surface to cure for 48 hours and protect it from moisture, rain or dew. On thick areas or deep encrustations of rust, it is important to wire-brush these areas to as level to the surface as possible without removing all the rust. The product will absorb into deep rust, leaving little product on the surface, resulting in rust bleed-through if not properly prepped.

Once the surface is cleaned with a solvent-based cleaner with our PRE that would be no issue.

I am trying to restore 2 inner fenders on my 1961 Impala. They are still painted, but have some rust over the paint. Is this the right product for me to use first, then apply a new topcoat of paint?

Asked by: Adrian
If paint is down, none of our chemical options should be used; like this converter. If paint and rust are present our Encapsulators would be best.

How heat-resistant is the coating this leaves behind? I have some rusty headers I'd like to try and rescue, if I applied this would the heat from the headers burn the coating off? If this product isn't suitable for headers, can you recommend one that is?

Asked by: monroe
This product will not leave a lasting coating. It turns the rusted metal to a black iron oxide finish that if not cleaned and top coated after treated will start to re-rust again.

Can rust converter be used on metal that is partially bare and partially rusted?

Asked by: Hogie
Converter chemically needs a decent amount of rust to be able to convert. When it is not present it wont be able to convert itself and will need to be removed from these areas that did not convert with PRE and a rag.

So I have some minor rust in my jams. Could I prep everything spray this over the rusty areas? Then how long do I need to wait before I spray primer/color

Asked by: Mavmann22
If there is no existing finish down that this would contact when applied then yes. You need to wait 48 hours for this to fully convert itself before applying anything further.

Will this product help remove the rust from old tools where the chrome plating has come off?

Asked by: Tommy77
It would not be recommended as this would in some sections contact the surrounding surface that has plating on it still.

Hi, I’ve used a competitors rust converter before on a fuel tank exterior. It ate away the rust and left holes behind ruining the tank. I’ve used the rust encapsulator since and it worked great. Is your rust converter going to leave holes behind? Thanks

Asked by: WAXOPIE
This should not generate holes when used.

I have several model T and model A's that were out in the desert. There is no paint left so there is nothing but surface rust on them. I do not want to have them blasted. Can I treat and then paint over the body panels in color?

Asked by: Dave 58
As long as there is no existing finish down that this will contact yes. It is still best to sand to smooth things out as best as possible before applying this because the surface you apply over is the surface texture you will end up with. This chemically converts the rust into a Black protective polymeric coating that then needs to be sealed off. It can be top coated with our body fillers, primers and paints.
