FAQs

Rust Encapsulator can be applied with the Undercoating System, but this application isn't recommended because Rust Encapsulator requires surface to be free of grease, oil, and loose rust. The best product to coat inside box sections is the Heavy Duty Anti-Rust (16017 ZP). This waxy, oily product flows into pinch welds & through rust to seal surface from contact with moisture & air, but cannot be painted over so is only suitable for inside box sections that don't show. Use lacquer thinner for cleanup.

In the Box

Contents

One quart of Rust Encapsulator, enough to coat up to 50 feet with a double coat.

Application Tips

Wire Brush to remove loose rust, scale and paint. Remove dust, grease, oil deposites. Thoroughly stir can contents to assure complete mixing. Feather surrounding paint with 220 grit sandpaper. Brush apply directly from the can or thin 20% w/lacquer thinner to spray. Single coats dry to the touch in 20 minutes and are thoroughly dry in 3-4 hours at 68 degrees F. For greater durability a second coat can be applied one hour after the first. Allow 6-8 hours after last coat before applying top coat. See can label for more details.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Stuff I've gotten the spay can and the quart. This works great .. of course, to be a true statement I would have to get back to you in 5 or more years .. anyway .. in the hard to reach places on my 32 chevy where you just can't get to, to completely de-rust .. sprays on nice and smooth. I try to at least prime or paint within 36 hours, or it needs scuffed. Needless to say, if i can get to it to derust, i can't get to it to scuff . The quart size does save you some money if you have a large area or like me a lot of small areas to do.I bought a cheap HF gun to spray it and it worked good. no thinning necessary.

Questions & Answers

Could it be used as a primer for a small set of rims?

Asked by: Harry165
i wouldnt use the encapsulator as a primer for wheels, because you could get a undisirable finish texture. i would sand or blast the wheels clean first, then prime the wheels after they have dried use a high build primer surfacer to get the surface nice and smooth , wet sand to a nice smooth surface . then onto color of your choice.

What is the best way to clean this encapsulator for paint after it is dry? I tried to use the Eastwood PRE painting prep, and it disolved it and wiped right off?

A simple tack rag or blowing off with a blow gun would be best. If grime or grease is on the surface and needs to be removed standard dish soap and water can be used.

Since Rust Encapsulator is epoxy fortified, would it adhere to a clean scuffed steel surface as well as epoxy primer? And can Rust Encapsulator be used as a primer?

Asked by: Gary H
This can be applied over a steel surface and can be used as a primer for our chassis black. It can be applied over our epoxy primer but has not been tested with other manufacturers.

When in the process is it best to spray the aerosol rust encapsulator? I'm at the first primer coat after blasting. I'm thinking now encapsulator, then seam sealer, then more primer and then single stage urethane. Does that work?

Asked by: bkap
Thanks. Most of the areas that need protection were unreachable by the blasting and first coat of primer, so I'm assuming it will work. And if it goes over some primer, I'm hoping that doesn't cause a problem.

I only applied one coat of it on each side of a vw pan, I'm planning to spray with extreme black primer and then extreme chassis black. Should I be sanding if I will be doing these steps a few days to a week in between? And will one coat of each be ok?

Asked by: xfactor6
You could get away with one coat of the primer, but the paint will need at least 2. At the time frame that would have elapsed in between applying this- the surface will need to be abraded with 400 grit paper.

I am having the interior media blasted, so the metal will all be bare metal and rust free. Can this be applied directly to the metal?  If so, can it be sprayed with a HVLP spray gun directly out of the gallon? What size tip should be used?

Asked by: Icepick1969
We recommend using our Pre-painting Prep or our Afterblast after the metal is blasted, since there could be residue left over from the lasting media. Then you can apply the Rust Encapsulator. The HVLP tip size would be 1.4mm.

I live on a gravel road What would be the best product to use on the frame, wheel wells and bottom of cab. Also on interior of cab floor

Asked by: Jack673
If rust is an issue we recommend Eastwood's rubberized Rust Encapsulator/Undercoating(13651Z) If Rust is not an issue we recommend Eastwood's rubberized under coating(160070. Both of the products come in spray cans or quarts and gallon. For the interior of the cab floor we would recommend Eastwood's Platinum Rust Encapsolator(16257ZP) it is an Epoxy fortified brush on that comes in pints, quarts and gallons.

Can i use this on top of encapsulator rubberize undercoat??  Or what would Be best to use on top of rubberize encapsulator for more extra coverage underneath the car,??  Por15 undercoat?

Asked by: Andy
We do not recommend regular Rust Encapsolator as a top coat to Rubberized Rust Encapsolator as there may be bonding issues. We would recommend a second coating of Rubberized Rust Encapsolator for that extra protection you seek. You must wait 1 hour before applying the second coating.
