Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Plus Safety Gray is a premium rust-preventive solution engineered to seal and protect metal surfaces with superior durability. Boasting twice the longevity of Eastwood’s original formula, Rust Encapsulator Plus forms a powerful barrier against future corrosion, even on rusted surfaces. Its high-solids formulation has undergone rigorous testing, outperforming competitors in salt-spray endurance (1,000+ hours) and chip resistance, ensuring reliable, long-term protection in demanding conditions. 

This versatile formula applies easily with a brush, roller, or spray, delivering complete coverage in just one coat. Its smooth, flowing application allows it to penetrate deeply into seams, pits, and pores, effectively sealing areas prone to rust. Within two hours, Rust Encapsulator Plus Safety Gray dries to a tack-free matte finish that resists fading in indirect light and can withstand temperatures up to 350°F, making it ideal for automotive frames, chassis, underbody panels, and truck beds. 

Rust Encapsulator Plus Safety Gray is designed to match other gray industrial finishes such as roof vents, steel doors, lawn & farm equipment, guardrails, sheds and more. It can also be top-coated with most high-quality finishes, allowing seamless integration into a variety of projects.

Instructions & Guides

Product Application


1. Prepare substrate by wire brush cleaning loose corrosion.


2. Solvent wipe with PRE or Acetone to remove oil, grease or other contaminants. Allow to dry thoroughly before coating.


3. Apply product when surface temp is between 40° Fahrenheit and 80° Fahrenheit with humidity from 10 to 75%.
NOTE: assure moisture is not accumulating on the surface to be coated.


4. Apply 1 medium wet coat with bristle brush or roller assuring all cavities and areas of corrosion are covered.

NOTE: Product can also be thinned up to 20% with Xylene and spray applied with traditional HVLP gravity or siphon spray equipment, use a 1.4 minimum needle/nozzle


5. Product will be tack-free after 2 hrs.


6. If top coating: apply top coat after 4 hrs., or before 48 hrs.

NOTE: If a smoother surface finish is desired, product can be mechanically sanded with 320 grit before top coating.


7. If top coating is desired after 48 hrs., surface must be scuff sanded with 320 grit paper to assure top coat adhesion.


8. Clean all spray equipment with acetone or lacquer thinner.


Product Storage


NOTE: After usage, wipe recess of can with clean rag and solvent to remove any product. If product is left in lid area recess of can and lid is re attached, the product will bond the two pieces together. This will render the product useless, as it will be very difficult to separate the lid from the can.


NOTE: It is highly recommended to use this product in conjunction with a plastic mixing cup and lid for short term storage after initial use.

Recommended Substrates and Prep

• Apply product as a primer/Encapsulator over clean or corroded (rusted) steel or cast iron
• Prep surface by mechanically cleaning loose flaking rust with a stiff brush or wire brush/wheel
• Remove any grease, oils or other surface contaminants with a solvent such as PRE or Acetone
• Apply by brush, roller or spray

can I apply lizard skin products directly over this?

LizardSkin can be applied directly over Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Plus. All Eastwood Rust Encapsulators, including the Plus version, have good recoat compatibility, making it suitable for use with LizardSkin products.

I'd like to paint the backside of a new chrome bumper with the rust encapsulator, will scuffing it up with a 3M pad etc. any recommendations for this purpose. Thanks

Scuffing this up with a 3M pad or sandpaper will work fine. Just be sure that nothing is left that is loose or flaking. Also after, wipe down with PRE cleaner or a good wax & grease remover before coating.

What should topcoat be?

Eastwood Rust Encapsulator can be top-coated with almost any paint. This includes a wide variety of topcoats, making it versatile for different applications. Customers love and we usually recommend our Chassis Blacks. If the coating has cured for more than 48 hours, scuff the surface lightly with 320-grit sandpaper to ensure proper adhesion of the topcoat.

Can it be used over old pain that's been hit with a DA sander

Yes. The surface must be clean, free of loose rust, and properly scuffed with abrasive paper (e.g., 320-grit sandpaper) to promote adhesion. Degrease the surface using a product like Eastwood PRE Painting Prep before application.
