Eastwood Self-Etch Primer Gray

Description

True acid-etching formula sticks to virtually any clean, bare, rust-free metal to improve adhesion and durability of most non-epoxy top coats.

  • Lacquer-based, single-stage formula requires no catalyst
  • Enhances Adhesion and Durability of Most Non-Epoxy Top Coats
  • Adheres to Steel, Stainless, Aluminum and chrome
  • Great base for high-build primers
  • Withstands up to 170 degrees F
  • Available in Easy to Use Aerosol Cans or economical gallons
  • Made in the USA

This easy-to-use aerosol etches and primes bare, rust-free metal in one step. Adheres to steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and galvanized steel and is compatible with virtually any paint or auto finish (not our Chassis Black or epoxy top coats). This self-etching formula bonds better to bare metals than other aerosol primers. It is also a single- stage formula which requires no catalyst, making it even easier to use.

Contents

16-oz. aerosol can covers about 10 sq. ft.
Gallon (120-sq.-ft. coverage) for your best value!

Application Tips

Our Chassis Black paints do not stick well to this and other single-stage self-etching primers. This Self-Etching primer uses an aggressive solvent system to assure excellent adhesion to clean, rust-free metal. Exercise care when using this product over enamel finishes as lifting may occur. Eastwood's Self-Etching Primer is lacquer-based.

Questions & Answers

Can I put spray bed liner over this self etching primer

Asked by: Brad78
Different bed liners require different primers laid down prior. You would need to check with the brand bed liner and see what primers are applicable for it to be painted over.

I have a fender to bare metal, but it already has bondo work from the previous owner. Can I apply self etching primer to the bondo? Or what do I do? Thanks in advance!

Asked by: Pascal
No, Self Etching primer can be applied to bare metal surfaces only. Epoxy primer would be a much better option in this scenario.

Hello, can I spray your chassis black over this or do I need another primer? Thanks.

Asked by: Mike
No- Our Original Chassis Black and Extreme Chassis Black can not e applied over Self Etching primer- they are not compatible. If you are using the Original or Extreme Chassis Black- it should be applied over top of the Extreme Chassis Primer: https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-extreme-chassis-black-primer-set.html. If you are using the 2K Chassis Black- this CAN be applied over top of Self Etching primer or our Epoxy primer ideally.

Hello, I stripped the ash tray from my dash to bare metal and applied this self etching primer. It seemed to bond well. Do I need to spray another primer before I lay down a top coat? If not, do I need a specific type of paint to go over it? Thanks.

Asked by: Mike
It depends on the top coat. Please contact us by emailing tech@eastwood.com or by calling us at 800-343-9353.

I put self etch primer over body filler in the fall. I just read that's not a good idea. What are the consequences of that. And what would you recommend I do to rectify it.

Asked by: Ken 67
You will need to strip this off down to bare metal or these ares will lift over time. Self Etching primer MUST go to bare metal.

72 VW bug, stripping top areas to metal where surface rust is, will Fast Etch rusty areas. Other areas, just sanded. What primer should I use for whole car? Etching primer might react with original paint, right?

Asked by: Keith
U=If using the Fast Etch please be advised it leaves a protective coating behind that needs to be removed with PRE painting prep before applying anything on top. Self Etching primer can only be applied to bare metal. Epoxy primer would be our best option.

I plan to apply body filler directly on bare steel where needed, and then use a primer to cover the remaining bare steel before using urethane high-build primer. Should I use epoxy or acid-etch? If I use acid-etch will it adhere to the filler?

Asked by: Richard
Self Etch primer would not work over body fillers. You would want to go with the Epoxy primer.

Would this be good primer for use on bare aluminium and then apply a bed liner coating like herculiner? Herculiner says to use a primer compatible with aluminum and polyurethane.

Asked by: Dale
We can not guarantee compatibility with any coating we do not sell. You will need to check with Herculiner directly for compatibility but Self Etch would be a great primer option for bare aluminum.
