Eastwood Self Etching Weld thru Primer

Product Overview:

Description

Eastwood's Self-Etching Weld-Thru Primer combines the benefits of a weld-thru and the capabilities of a traditional self-etching primer.

  • Enhances adhesion and durability of top coats
  • Prevents corrosion and reduces spatter
  • Non-conductive organic binders
  • Gray color
  • Made in the USA

This unique self-etching primer formula has organic binders that replace conductive heavy metals such as copper and zinc. These organic binders will burn off during the welding process, leaving a corrosion-resistant self-etching primer for paint prep. This product will reduce spatter and distortion caused by excessive heat that occurs during the welding process. Compatible with MIG, TIG and Arc welding. The metal-etching primer will enhance adhesion and durability and is compatible with most top coats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for me I have used this product before in my shop with no problems. Its like any other spray can of paint when you get through using it for the job turn it upside down an spray for a few seconds to clean out spray nozzle. I do this on all spray cans i use to get all the paint in the can out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pre weld I was waiting on this to precoat my frame and backside of new weld in mounts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 78 Z28 floor pan Used this and sprayed old and new metal where they will overlap. Still able to weld through. There is a slight change in your arc similar to when you weld zinc plated parts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SELF-ETCHING WELD-THRU IS GREAT! How many times have I welded a rocker closed or sealed up a pillar wishing I had the maximum possible primer on the inside, so I don't have to do the job again?!? This primer is great! Just spray your parts and keep working, since the factory never even put paint in there, it's gonna be a looong time before someone thinks they have to revisit my work! (Probably never! HA!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from it works grate best primer i used yet go's on smooth drys fast take a look for your self

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great product I have used other Eastwood products with great success and decided to try this one. This paint is great! I have used the weld-thru primer for the backside of patches prior to welding and was very pleased with the results. I would like to see Eastwood make smaller sized spray cans to get into hard to reach places.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Self etching weld-thru primer The product does what it says and more, the zinc chemical also stops the surface rust which is a added bonus. Great buy !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy It is easy to use, sprays on nice, welds through nice no problems when welding

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for years! I have been using this pre-weld primer for years. Have great confidence in it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great Sprays a little thin like good automotive paint. Welds through easy and clean.
Date published: 2013-06-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW I do a lot of restoration work on old Jeeps and use this paint exclusivly for protecting my work on the bayer metal even if I dont weld it. I buy it by the case.
Date published: 2013-03-08
Rated 5 out of 5 by from easy to use Works 100% better then the copper base one they sold before...this one is high quality and works and doesn't clog up at the nozzle
Date published: 2013-02-15
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, but... As others mentioned, product delivery from the container needs “something”? It sprays out fine but builds up very quickly at the nozzel and actually runs into the nozzel basin. I found the tip sprayed too wide of a pattern, wasting material. I changed the wide-pattern tip to a standard circle pattern tip and this helped narrow down the pattern and reduce waste. For me, I’m spraying this on the “to be welded only surfaces” and using another self-etching product for the large flat areas not being welded. Recommend addressing the product build up and maybe provide two nozzel types; one for those who wish to use on the whole panel, and another for weld area use only.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Weld thru primer This stuff is good but for those that wish to know this stuff does not lay down like paint. It goes on very wet and can be very spattry and drippy. Has been a huge help on light surface rust prevention.
Date published: 2017-08-07
Rated 4 out of 5 by from works as avertised Have used this on my welding areas for protection and does a great job
Date published: 2016-08-25
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Weld-Thru Works I purchased Weld-Thru just to give it a try. Sprays on nice and smooth, dries fast and covers well. Great for plug welding two panels together. I tried it first by cleaning off the primer just in the area of the plugs on a test piece, then without removing any primer. Works good ether way. Good product..
Date published: 2016-06-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from good product Goes on nice and does a good job, the only reason I did not rate 5 was a had to replace the spray tip to eliminate the splatter. I believe the wide spray pattern on the original tip is to wide. Replaced with small one hole tip and went on good.
Date published: 2016-01-16
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job It seemed to work as claimed. Had no welding issues. Only burned off at the welded areas and did not burn too far back. My only complaint was that the paint would spit as I was spraying larger areas. I don't know if the spray nozzle is not designed correctly as paint would build up on the nozzle and then eventually get into the spray stream which was the cause of the spitting. Not a big deal as the paint will get a topcoat, but this needs to be addressed or looked into. So it gets 4 out of 5 stars due to this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product--for a price Works exactly as intended. Make sure to shake well before using and there will be no problem with not having enough propellant. Get this stuff when it's on sale.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from weld thru Have not used it looking ahead for the next job. After Christmas.
Date published: 2014-12-08
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Welds great but hard to spray the last third I bought this for welding in new floor pans and patch panels on my Nova. Works great and sprays good for most of the can. When the can got low its almost like there wasn't enough propellent and it started to spit and sputter. Welds great, doesn't seem to bother the welder and doesn't burn too much. I ordered more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Won't buy more. I am a welder/fabricator by trade, Makes welding 20 ga difficult, even with .023 wire. Better to coat and then clean to bare metal at the precise weld locations.
Date published: 2013-04-16
Rated 4 out of 5 by from works Good Work good as being weld thru. Way better than the local paint store brands and when on sale its priced better also.
Date published: 2012-10-01
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product Seems to work well. It doesn't diminish the arc when Mig welding. I'll purchase again. Which is was 7 dollars or so, like most quality spray paints (rustoleum, etc.).
Date published: 2012-07-08
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good primer, but where’s your quality control? Better than most primers I’ve tried. Good spray pattern, but tends to spatter at the worst time and as others have said, the last 1/3rd of the can can be troublesome to spray. Thankfully I ordered more than one can so I can scavenge a nozzle when Eastwood decides not to include one.
Date published: 2021-01-16
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poor spray pattern Unfortunately the spray spit and made a real mess!! Thank God it was going in places that it did not need a perfect top coat!
Date published: 2016-07-06
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Better than nothing Great for getting in areas that get sealed up/overlapped and cant get top coated. It does add to the resistance of the weld, so you'll need a little more voltage. comes right off when you wire brush the slag afterwards though... Also, "self etching" paint is said to conflict with magnetic paints, like Monstaliner. so dont use this if you plan to use magnetic paints....

Is the weld through self etching primer ok as a base coat for powder coat?

It is not recommended to use a self etching primer under powder because it will not have good adhesion. This will also not make for a strong base under powder coat.

can i spray this over the rust encapsulator and still weld

If you need to weld in a location in which you used Rust Encapsulator you will need to remove the Encapsulator down to bare metal prior to welding or using a weld through primer.

Is this similar in corrosion protection to zinc weld through primers? I hear that OEM's recommend only zinc weld through primers. Copper weld through primers are not recommended. They don't even mention primers like this. It would be helpful to know.

Asked by: Easy
This self etching weld thru primer has no zinc or copper but has organic binders that act like it and give a corrosion resistance.

Can I spray Eastwood epoxy on top after finishing the weld or not due to the self etch?

Asked by: 70chevelle
Since mixing self etch and epoxy isn't recommended there is a work around. Simply apply the weld thru only in areas which overlap. This way the areas are not exposed when welded and the Epoxy will still have a nice clean are to adhere.

Is there a similar product that is suitable to coated over with a PPG epoxy or etching primer?

Unfortunately we have not tested any of our product for compatibility over top of PPG Epoxy. With this being a self etch primer I would not recommend mixing this with an Epoxy.

This could technically be applied to properly scuffed stainless steel. However we would not recommend welding through this since it would give you contamination that you should not have on stainless.
