FAQs

Q: Can Rust Encapsulator be applied with the Undercoating System?

A: Technically, yes, but this application isn't recommended because Rust Encapsulator requires surface to be free of grease, oil, and loose rust. The best product to coat inside box sections is the 16017ZP Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust (Qt.). This waxy, oily product flows into pinch welds and through rust to seal surfaces from contact with moisture and air, but cannot be painted over, so it's only suitable for inside box sections that don't show. Use lacquer thinner for cleanup.

Guides & Accessories

Instructions

Use a wire brush to remove loose rust, scale and paint, and remove dust, grease and oil deposits. Feather surrounding paint with 220-grit sandpaper. Shake can for at least 2 minutes once the mixing ball starts to rattle. Hold the Rust Encapsulator can 10-12" above surface as you spray. A single coat dries to the touch in 20 minutes, and is thoroughly dry in 3-4 hours at 68 degreesF. For greater durability, a second coat can be applied 1 hour after the first. Allow 6-8 hours after the last coat before applying topcoat. Use over or under body fillers.

Safety Information

Work in a well-ventilated area when applying this product. The use of a respirator is recommended. Shake vigorously for 2 minutes before spraying.

Accessories

Want 3 Times More Rust Protection?

In places where little or no surface prep can be done, our Internal Frame Coating or Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust (16017ZP) is actually a better choice for applying into blind areas such as box sections.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good I bought this rust encapsulator for a surface rust area on my daughter's car. It has only been three weeks since I have removed the surface rust and applied the rust encapsulator but so far I am very pleased. At three weeks in to this I would recommend this product very highly. No signs of rust bubbling thru.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from What is it? Maybe I fell off the truck yesterday, but what is this…enamel? Lacquer? I couldn’t find the type in the listing iron the can; it seemed to go on pretty well, but I missed some important info when it comes to topcoat compatibility.

The 2k epoxy primer can certainly be applied over the rust encapsulator.

Hello, can this be applied over a polished welded surface or does the surface need to be rusted for it to do its purpose? I'm looking to protect the surface better than just the usual primer and paint.

Asked by: Eurotech shop
Rust does not need to be present for this product to adhere/work. It can be applied to bare metal as long as it is scuffed with 400 grit paper first.

Can this be used to stop/prevent surface rust on exhaust pipes?

Asked by: Skip
Unfortunately this would not be able to withstand the higher heat this application would subject this coating to.

I have a 2012 Ram 3500 pickup which has heavy rust on the frame and running gear. Trying to decide if I need to wire wheel it all off or if any product(s) could be applied directly over it to stop further rusting and protect it.

Asked by: njjdc
Rust Encapsulator will work on controlling your rust. Just need to remove all lose surface rust, wipe the area down with Acetone, and apply 2 coats of the Rust Encapsulator.

Is this a good product for Boat trailers used in saltwater environment?

Asked by: skeeter08
While we have never tested directly on a vehicle or trailer which is contact with direct salt water this certainly should work for some time. We do also have a much stronger version which has passed 1,500 hours in the salt spray chamber test. The Platinum Rust Encapsulator should be your best bet. https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-rust-encapsulator-platinum.html

I applied this product to a rocker panel. After 24 hours I was going to put another coat. I used pre to clean the panel and the product started to come off. I was able to completely rub off the product with pre. Is this normal?

Asked by: Vlad
Since the Rust Encapsulator is not a catalyzed product this is completely normal. If another coat is desired all you simply need to do is scuff the surface and blow the dust off before moving on.

I watched your video. I am not sure I get it right. If I use this product does it remove the rust area and also add the silver color? or should I remove the dust first and then apply this one. Thanks

Asked by: Sina
This product is designed to spray directly onto the rust.. It will seal and convert it into a stable surface and leave a silver finish.

Does the encapsulator need to be top coated, or can it be left alone.  I like the color and finish on my tractor rims.

Asked by: RusterBuster
Rust Encapsulator does not need to be top coated, but can be top coated with most automotive finishes. If you are not top coating, I recommend at least two coats of Rust Encapsulator.
