Customer Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gas tank paint Works excellent. The only thing I recommend is to put the cans on a shaker before using.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Color If you do not have a NEW GAS TANK, then this is the next best thing. It is about the closest color for a gas tank that is available on the market today. Of course I prefer the galvanized look of a new gas tank, but if the existing tank still operates fine, this is a whole lot less money. Also, not all gas tanks are available as a reproduction so this is the next best thing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prep is important Paint works well if the prep is done correctly. Make sure grease, oil, etc. is cleaned from the surface. Done three tanks, first was a learning experience, 2nd and 3rd turned out well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tank Tone If you need the look of a new tank this is the way to go my tank looks new now easy to use goes on smooth great spray pattern no problems with paint

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tank Tone Great product and service I bought Tank Tone Metallic Coating and used it to paint my gas tank but liked the look of it so much I used it to paint my old steel chevrolet valve covers that Im using on a vintage sprint car motor. I didnt have aluminum covers but wanted the look of the old aluminum covers and Tank Tone achieved the look. Thank you

Rated 5 out of 5 by from tank in a can tank came out like new, its all in the prep though. Applied in some rather brutal conditions ie very cold and unheated area. But used a space heater to set the paint. One can did a 17 gallon tank with no shortage and 3 coats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good The paint turned out very nicely. the only draw back was that the spray button was very hard to press down and my finger became fatuiged very easily. Other than that it went on nice ,covered very well, and dryed tho a nice silver sheen. I would us it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tank tone Great product, applied in very bad environment. ie cold and had to dry with a heat gun and kerosene salamander. But the finish was outstanding. 60 year old tank looks better than it ever did.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice finish I made my own tank and wanted it to look factory. I do suggest priming, Used an epoxy gray for base. Shake well even as you are using, if concerned about drips wipe nozzle as you use it and keep finger towards rear of nozzle. Sounds stupid but it is a harder to push on this can. Go easy on coverage, I found good results by many light coats. It appears to be blotchy but when dries it is uniform. This paints on similar to cast iron color paint, don't concentrate heavy in one area. I was very pleased with the results. Just take your time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good! Used this product on a 57 Chevy gas tank. This paint looks a bit blotchy when its first sprayed but once it dries it looks really nice with a uniform color. Cant say how it will look after a few years but so far I am very pleased. Did not have any issues with the nozzle clogging or spattering as other reviewers have stated.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Metallic Tank Coating for the first seconds, the paint sputtered out of the can but after that it went on smoothly, no runs, no fisheye. Was pleased with the finish it gave the tank, looks original and didn't change the color much from the bare metal. I used this product on a new, replacement tank. will purchase another can to touch up as it got some scratches when installing it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks great media blasted tank before painting. came out great, 1 can covered in 3 coats on a C3 Corvette fuel tank. Judging from other reviews and my experience, I would change the design of the spray nozzle. Trigger type nozzles are much better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from TANK TONE Agree at times there is spatter and spitting however after two coats and drying it looked good. I have used a lot of Eastwood products and they always attempt a quality product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from LIKE NEW Looked blotchy when applied but dried to a consistent color. No need to spend the money on a new tank.Looks very nice

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good Final results were satisfactory. Spray nozzle spits all over, big problem. Don't spray over piece, drips on parts. After 2nd coat, appearance was alright.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks great Based on the dealer info, i bought 2 cans. One can was plenty for two very nice coats. the paint coves well and looks great. I would wait for a shipping deal, tho. $10 to ship 2 cans of spray paint is a bit much.
Date published: 2013-03-16
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product Nice product. Good coverage, no primer needed. $10 to ship two cans of spray paint is ridiculous.
Date published: 2013-03-08
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good to go. Total coverage with two cans on a twenty gal. tank using two coats. Little trouble with spray nozzle but not an issue. I would use again. Good to go.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks good Had enough paint in one can to do my 14 gal tank and the straps. Came out nice, looks like new. Spray came out in blobs at times, but not a real issue.
Date published: 2012-05-03
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good This product covered my tank with one coat, but it looked so good, I put another coat on it.
Date published: 2010-01-27
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Seems OK but needs a sealed finish Tank Tone seems like a good product (time will tell) but the overall finish comes up more like an unfinished primer. It water-spots easily and seems like it will be hard to keep it clean. There is no sheen and color is a bit blotchy, partly due to inferior spray-can sprayer. Go for the third can for touch-ups. Customer Service has suggested application of Diamond Clear Coat to add a sealed maintainable finish. I will give that a try. Use Tank Tone but be wary of possible shortcomings.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for use on existing tank If you do not have a NEW GAS TANK, then this is the next best thing. If the existing tank still operates fine, this is a whole lot less money. Finish was acceptable & coverage okay.. As to operation at first the can worked fine & then it began to sputter & trip when it was below the half full line. Had to purchase a second can which Eastwood discounted 10% when I made them aware of the problem.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great look & results; very expensive! I have used the product on two tanks and they both came out great. I like the bright look and the "Zink" protection. Consider using the product on the back side of newly chromed bumpers as they are normally left with a raw metal that will rust if not treated. Tank Tone looks great and will keep the inside of bumpers from rusting over time. I had four cans that all sprayed perfect, even after being on the shelf for a while.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from soluble in gasoline Good color and coverage but was very surprised to find a two months after applying it to a gas tank that the paint easily dissolved by gasoline. So much so that the gasoline washed off the paint as gasoline ran down the side of the gas tank. Was expecting at least a gasoline resistant (maybe swells but is not soluble in) paint. Wow.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tank Tone Spray drips alot and color does not match Ford-Mercury tanks. Had to use Rustoleum Silver Metalic paint and Tank Tone sprayed together, closer match. But it does covers well one can will do a tank

Rated 2 out of 5 by from tank tone covers well, looks great the only draw back is that you better buy plenty, every can I've purchased starts to spit about have way through and then you have drips. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but it's the only spray can I have trouble with.
Date published: 2016-02-01
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing I sand blasted my tank and applied 3 coats of the tank tone. I did not prime as it says in the description, no priming necessary. Surface rust appeared in 3 months. I now will have to apply rust converter and spray the tank again. I have been satisfied with most Eastwood products. Not this on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not what I was expecting Bought two cans of this to restore a gas tank. The tank was actually just two years old, but the prior owner sprayed in with a silver metallic paint. I stripped off all of the paint and applied the Tank Tone. It was basically the exact same thing that I had just stripped off. It looks like a silver or argent color metallic paint. I wanted the factory OEM look so I stripped off the tank tone with paint stripper, took a scotch bright pad and some fine steel wool and went over the entire tank. Wiped it down with some lacquer thinner and then sprayed it with a satin clear lacquer and got the results I was looking for.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money Don't even bother with this. I used this on my 79 trans am gas tank. It spit large drops of paint out and I shook the heck out of this can. One can was not enough so you might need more depending on tank size. Looks nothing like the picture in the can. More of a light grey. Glad I had on gloves. The coverage is all speckled (hard to see in picture). I'm going to let it dry and go to the local store and buy a different brand of silver like I should have done in the first place. Sand it and repaint it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WOULD NOT BUY AGAIN. Bought 2-can's, both sprayed very poorly, sputtered and dripped, now more sanding.

Questions & Answers

I have some brake master cylinders I am restoring. They are not cast or I would use the other paint you offer for brakes. They are made from machined steel with sheet metal reservoirs. Would this paint be good for such an application?

Asked by: JAG Man
Yes this paint should be fine for this type of application.

Does the paint contain Lacquer ? I'm told that you can't re-paint with enamel over existing lacquer.

Asked by: Ren and Stimpy
This is a lacquer based paint.

is this gas resistance? can it be used on old motorcycle carburetors bodies or fuel petcocks?

Asked by: skye
This paint is not really fuel resistant since it is just designed for the exterior of a fuel tank where fuel is normally not present.

Can/should Tank Tone be covered with a clear coat for additional protection?

Asked by: 68Hurst
If you want to use a clear, you would need to use the Diamond gloss clear for painted surfaces. However, this really isn't necessary as it will not give you any added protection.
