Powder coating differs from traditional paint in many ways, among them the use of clear coat. In general, clear coats are not applied to most gloss powder finishes. However, it can be done when you want to add extra protection, enhance the finish, or achieve a specific appearance.
One question the often comes up involves the use of clear powder on metallic powders. We asked Eastwood’s product development manager about this, and here is what he said.
“It’s true our Extreme Bonded Chrome powder must be top coated with clear powder or liquid due to the high content of aluminum. But most of our other metallics, including Single Stage Reflective Chrome, do not have to be clear coated. This is particularly true if used in an indoor application, such as decorative pieces or furniture. On parts used in an exterior or automotive application, we recommend applying a top coat for maximum durability and UV protection. This can be either our clear powder or urethane clear liquid.”
So while metallic powder coat finishes do not necessarily require a clear powder coat finish, applying one can provide several benefits. Here’s why you might choose to apply a clear top coat to metallic finishes.

Enhanced Durability
A clear top coat can add extra protection against scratches, chips, and other physical wear, which is particularly useful for high-contact areas or parts exposed to harsh conditions (like car wheels or outdoor furniture).
UV Protection
Metallic finishes can be more susceptible to UV degradation over time. A clear coat can help protect the metallic particles from fading due to sun exposure, preserving the appearance longer.
Improved Gloss and Depth
A clear coat can enhance the depth of the metallic finish, giving it a glossy, vibrant look that makes the metallic flakes stand out more. This is especially beneficial if you want to bring out the reflective properties of the metallic finish.
Easier Cleaning
A clear top coat can create a smoother surface, making it easier to clean and maintain the metallic finish.
