Eastwood MIG Welder Spool Gun with Metal Connector

Product Overview:

Description

Eastwood MIG Welder Spool Gun with Metal Connector

When a restoration project calls for welding metals other than sheet metal and steel, the Eastwood MIG aluminum spoolgun can help with that. This universal spool gun is compatible with all of our MIG welders. By swapping it for the regular MIG torch, you’ll be able to fabricate aluminum at the same thickness the welder could handle for steel. The Eastwood spool gun has a metal connector for use with welders that have metal plugs on the torch head.

A metal spool gun is one of many great MIG welding accessories you can order from Eastwood. It comes with a 1-pound spool of aluminum welding wire and has a 1-year manufacturer’s warry. Watch our demonstration video to learn how to use a spool gun or call the Eastwood tech team seven days a week.

    Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good piece of gear that could be great The spool gun works pretty well once you get it dialed in. Only two things I don't like about it are: 1) the ill-ftting clear plastic cover over the compartment. It fit well for about the first day, and that's about it. The only good thing about the cover is it does help keep most of the debri and dust out of the wire area. But it could have been much, much better designed without an increase in cost. So prepare for a cover that kinda does the job, but doesn't fit correctly. The 2nd thing is the neck on the front of the gun should be flexible. The gun is huge anyway, but the solid neck makes it more difficult to work with than it really needs to be. I'm not talking about anything crazy, but the ability to slightly angle the tip one way or the other would be hugely beneficial when fighting the size of the rest of the gun in a narrow space. Those two things aside, it's a good piece of gear. I've run a couple 1lb spools of wire through it and haven't had a lot of problems. If need to weld aluminum and don't want to mess with TIG, this is a good option.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Can’t find parts Works great when it works. Found out the gas diffuser is not standard. Had to ream out a standard diffuser in order for it to work. Would love to see a part number somewhere in the manual or website.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No Spool gun feeder motor seems to have issues with feeding the wire through. Had to replace a lot off tips. The cover for the wire keeps falling off had to put some duct tape.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don’t waste your money I bought this with the MIG 135 and either the welder isn’t powerful enough for it or there’s something wrong with the gun. The wire just balls up on the material acts like it’s not getting a good ground and doesn’t penetrate. Don’t waste your money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Spool gun drive is terrible I bought the back when they you thespoolgun for free. I see why they gave them away, they're junk. I love the welder, but can't use it for aluminum, only mild and stainless steel

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor value I bought the MiG 175 with this spool gun included. Initially I used the spool gun to do some aluminum welding on my boat and it worked pretty well. More recently I used it with some steel flux core wire to do another project. It didn't perform as well with the steel wire. I had to crank the tensioner all the way down to get it to feed and then the wire started snarling on the spool because there wasn't enough drag at that end. Turns out that was because the knurled knob holding tension on the spool was backing off. I fixed that by putting an extra nut on after adjusting the tension knob so it wouldn't back off. Worked for a while and I went through about 4 1-lb rolls of wire before it gave up on me. It started having trouble feeding wire and wisps of smoke started coming out of the motor area. I'm quite sure it's not because of excess tension because I could easily pull the wire through by hand. Even after taking the wire right out of the gun, it still smokes when the motor is activated with no load. I have sent a message to Eastwood but based on other reviews I highly doubt there will be a solution offered other than buying a new gun. For the money, it seems this was not a good value. Basically $200 for about 10 spools of life.

    Questions & Answers

I have a 180 mig welder with metal 4 plug and a 175 spool gun with plastic 4 plug. Is it possible to convert the plastic plug to metal plug what color wire goes to what number on the plug are they wired the same

    Asked by: Pete
Aviation Plug Connector GX16-4 worked for me.  These are available on-line for less than $10 for five sets.   Two contacts supply power to the spool motor.  Reverse them if the motor goes backward.  The other two are the trigger switch (off/on).  Use a multimeter to determine which two are the switch while pulling the trigger on and off.  The other two are the motor power.

Will this work with my MP250I even though it's DC only? How would i set that up?

    Asked by: Jamin
Yes this is compatible. It should be covered in the manual, but basically you swap the MIG Gun connector and trigger for this one, put the welder it in spool gun mode and go to town. Because it's DC only the results aren't as beautiful as a professional TIG welder with an AC machine, but they are better nothing or a complete novice just melting metal away with a TIG welder if you know what I mean...

Do you use the same weld setting chart on inside lid for aluminum as you would the steel or are the settings different for same thicknesses and if so where do I find those settings?

    Asked by: Billy oi
You run slightly different settings when MIG welding aluminum with the spool gun and 100% Argon gas. Welders like our MIG 140 and MIG 180 have spool gun specific settings at the bottom of the chart eg. https://www.eastwood.com/images/pdf/p33980h_settings_chart.jpg But, generally when compared to settings for an equivalent steel thickness you end up running a little more voltage and significantly more wire speed to get good results with the spool gun on aluminum. The wire speed is particularly important to turn up because the aluminum wire tries to melt back much faster.
