Q: Can Rust Encapsulator be applied with the Undercoating System?

A: Technically, yes, but this application isn't recommended because Rust Encapsulator requires surface to be free of grease, oil, and loose rust. The best product to coat inside box sections is the Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust (16017ZP). This waxy, oily product flows into pinch welds and through rust to seal surfaces from contact with moisture and air, but cannot be painted over, so it's only suitable for inside box sections that don't show. Use lacquer thinner for cleanup.

Wire Brush to remove loose rust, scale and paint. Remove dust, grease, oil deposits. Shake can for at least 2 mins after mixing ball starts to rattle.Feather surrounding paint with 220 grit sandpaper. Apply Rust Encapsulator can 10 to 12 inches from surface. Single coats dry to the touch in 20 minutes and are thoroughly dry in 3 to 4 hours at 68 degrees F. For greater durability a second coat can be applied one hour after the first. Allow 6 to 8 hours after last coat before applying top coat.

Want 3 Times More Rust Protection?

Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Platinum

In places where little or no surface prep can be done, our Internal Frame Coating or Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust (16017ZP) is actually a better choice for applying into blind areas such as box sections.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I've used the black a lot and love it. The only thing I would say is different with the white is that where I could use the black as the final finish after two coats, the white is just too translucent to act as a final coat the way the black is. Plan to put paint over the top of the white encapsulator to get a truly white finish. This is exactly what you want over rust on a part which will have a light colored finish, just top it off with the paint color of your choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellant Coverage I purchased about 3 weeks ago and finally got to use some. I need it on me house. It is steel sidings that thru the years of other owners neglect has rusted in places creating eye sore. I used a wire wheel brush electric to knock off the heavy rust and sprayed the white over it. My son and I liked the coverage and the ease of use. Wondered How the Quart or Gallon would cover Using A Spray Gun ..... Worth the Try for the price. I No not whether it will hold up. I intend to purchase additional for other items in white and the black. The temperature was a lil chilly today But the prep was easy and the coating we sprayed two coats. Will Update review thru the winter and spring. We will be painting a Gray over this white in the spring. Great stuff. It encapsulated the rust and none came thru as yet ....... Amazing Coverage .... Will also purchase for the truck, Car, and tractors. As well as the other things needing painted. Thank You For A Great Product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from About the best you can buy at any price. After wasting money on Rustoleum, I bought this on other's recommendations and WOW. It did exactly what was advertised. I have never seen another rust product like it. I bought more and more. Finally a solution to rust.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps my old car like new I bought this to cover surface rust on my beautiful, 18 year old Buick until I can run it through the body shop. Matches well. Coats better than competition.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lays on nicely, flows well, ends up hard as a rock It's a POR15 product. I knew it would be great. It is!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good lasting coverage ! This is a good encapsulator when applied correctly. As with all Eastwood Rust Encapsulator products some common sense prep is required. You just don't spray it on and walk away. For years I only used their black and then resprayed a color to finish. This white is good as it's applied. No need to spray over it unless you want a different color. I sprayed the underside of a truck hood. It is holding up well against road rash and heat. Highly recommend it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not compatible with Pre Paint Prep nor Rustoleum I used the Eastwood Rust Encapsulator aerosol on a 60 year old Volvo that had surface rust on bottom surface of the dash, on the kick panel areas and in the voids behind the kick panels. I prepped by wire brushing, then cleaning with Pre Paint Prep as best I could. I applied the Rust Encapsulator fairly thickly, did not top coat and it seems to do the trick. I also applied the Rust Encapsulator on under dash heat ducting. The rust encapsulator crinkled and lifted a) when I subsequently cleaned the parts with Eastwood's Pre Paint Prep and b) when I applied the Rustoleum rattle can primer and top coats. ny last go around, I wiped everything off and will repaint the parts without the encapsulator as a base coat. The heat ducting parts were not down to bare metal and perhaps that played a part in my paint failure. I recommend doing a test before applying any top coat.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from white rust encapsulator After a through shaking and mild can warming the first 10 seconds of spray were beautiful. Then, can sputtered and burped out a mess on my freshly sand blasted parts.Being that it was white,it resembled cottage cheese. Let dry, reblasted , used another POR product I had on hand.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not impressed. I bought this product last fall and painted my door bottoms with it. Rusty areas were wire brushed and then wiped down clean with lacquer thinner and allowed to dry. The paint applied well but was thin and required dozens of coats to get a good coverage and thickness, paint was allowed to dry between coats. Once done the paint was a reasonable color match to my GM's Arctic White and I was happy with the results. Unfortunately the product does not stand up to NH winter and road treatment chemicals and by spring the rust has completely overrun the paint and is probably where it would be if I had done nothing. At this point I don't see this product being a winner in the war on rust.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from NOT IMPRESSED I found multiple coats were required, 4-5 actually to get decent converge. Then I discovered this does not play well with Urethane topcoat. My paint wrinkled and did not adhere well at all. Was forced to strip the project and start over. I never had a problem like this when using POR15 products.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not happy with price or results Used 4 cans (80 bucks worth) to repaint a garden arch. Looked nice for two days, then I saw rust coming through the new paint. I had to repaint it again using 2 cans of Rustoleum ( under 10 bucks worth) This product is too expensive and does not work as advertised.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rust encapsulator-white This was good at first and the first can was easy to put a nice wide patterndown and cover everything. the last 3 cans purchased together. Spit, clogged and did not want to paint. I sent a complaint to easytwood and never got a reply. after getting what I could done I needed to sand and rep[rime areas and the rust was untouched. Maybe the can or not even enough spray because of the batch. Save your money! I bought this to get hard to reach places I can not get to with a spray gun. it worked better upside down than upright. I shook the cans for 20 minutes because they sat between work. I love eastwood just not this or the customer service!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too watery, poor coverage, rust came right through If I could give no stars I would. I bought this and the suggested prep supplies too. Followed their directions. This stuff is WAY too thin, doesn't cover worth a crud. I needed to apply 5 coats to adequately cover the metal. This paint was just too runny, wouldn't flow well, it dripped, with prolonged dry times. Temps were 70-80 during the day and 60 at night, so it wasn't the temperature. Now before anybody tells me the rocker is rusted thru... I checked it first. ground the surface to rough it up and get any old rust flakes/paint off. I used the black internal frame rust paint on the interior of the rocker, waited a week, then began the white outer coating. This is when I noticed the HUGE difference in viscosity. It made sure the paint hadn't settled, I shook cans for over 10 minutes, right side up & up side down. The results were the same for 3 cans of this paint- watery, drips and poor coverage. DO NOT BUY this white paint. I'll give any other competitor a try next. I had to buy 3 cans...outrageous. Needed to go back and buy 2 more cans because it wouldn't cover- only needed one can of the internal frame paint to do the internals of the rocker. This product has enraged me so much I will never buy another Eastwood paint product. Sorry guys, you really dropped the ball on this one. If I had to say something nice- your frame paint seems to do a much better job covering and flowing to coat the metal.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from light surface rust came right though. I bought this to do preventive maintenance on my white jeep. Only rust issues that I had was that spot-welds underneath the car started to show surface rust. I went over the surface rust with a wire wheel, wiped down with a cleaner and applied numerous coats of the white rust encapsulator. The Jeep sat in my driveway for 2 weeks while I waited to install new axles seals. After the two weeks, I noticed that the rust started to show though the rust encapsulator. I shouldn't have wasted my time with all the prep work and cost of the encapsulator. In the spring, I'll use another product to stop the rust.

Ok I have a 68 T-Bird that had a vinyl top that someone removed and prayed something like truck bed liner on it. I'm taking it down to metal. How do I prep the area? I have areas of bare metal and rust dimples.

Asked by: 68 tndr jet
Most times customers will spray the areas with the pits with our Encapsulator and let dry. Then come back and sand to bare metal which leaves the Encapsulator in just the pits. From here you can apply your body work and paints.

can bedliner be sprayed overtop this product as a tpcoat?

Asked by: copester
The bed liner can be sprayed over top of this product in small areas. We would not recommend using rust encapsulator in an entire bed and then putting the bed liner over it for strength. If the entire bed is rusty consider media blasting it to remove the rust prior to putting on the bed liner.

Can lacquer thinner be used to clean the bare metal, instead of using Pre Paint Prep?

Asked by: Kimbo6
No, only PRE Painting Prep or acetone can be used to wipe down the surface before paint. Lacquer thinner doesn't actually cut the grease, oil, or other contaminants, it only moves them around and leaves a residue behind.

Can the encapsulator be sprayed over clean rust/paint combination surface?  Or do I need to sand away the paint surface down to rusted metal?

Asked by: Seasn
You should feather back the painted surface until all of the rusted metal is exposed and you begin to see clean metal. Finish feathering back the paint with 220 grit sand paper. Make sure to rough up the rusted surface with at least a wire brush before moving on to topcoat with the encapsulator. Once all that is done just prep the surface with "Pre" surface cleaner and then spray the encapsulator on as per the directions on the can.

What kind of finish does this leave? Is it matt of gloss? I am thinking of just spraying a few rust spots on my plow truck just to clean it up a little and didn't know if I should put a clear over it?

Asked by: Tman
This will provide a matte white finish. Rust Encapsulator is compatible with almost all topcoats, so you will be able to put a gloss finish over it, if you'd like.
