Rust Remover - Eastwood Fast Etch

Product Overview:

Description

This specially formulated rust remover is a powerful, rust-fighting liquid created to meet the needs of auto restorers.

  • Ideal Prep for Painting and Powder Coating
  • Leaves Zinc Phosphate Coating
  • Promotes Adhesion and Prevents Rust

It reaches even inaccessible areas, quickly dissolving iron oxide completely and leaving a zinc phosphate coating. Fast Etch can be sprayed, brushed, or used as a parts dip. It is non-toxic, non-flammable and reusable. This is not a primer. Treated surfaces should be wiped with PRE Painting Prep (10041 Z) or thinner before priming and painting. Only the quart size comes with a sprayer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eastwood Fast Etch This stuff really works well. I used it to prep a gas tank before I sealed it and it worked perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was skeptical Works just like in the video. I was skeptical but this is awesome if your metal is bare and has to sit for awhile

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ford Fender works great, had water sand blast done on fender. i stopped cuz it was rusting after sitting for little while.. used fast Etch and cleaned right up. Great stuff.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does what it promises to do. I have two cars in my shop in bare metal. High humidity combined with oily hands caused lots of flash rust. This product removed the flash rust and left behind the coating as promised. Make sure you have your respirator and gloves and protect the shop floor. Very toxic stuff. If you let it dry on the surface too long it leaves a white powdery coating that's very difficult to remove. I anticipate having to thoroughly sand the surface before primer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of time and money I sandblasted a mustang and used this before epoxy primer. Discolored the metal which was no big deal. I didn’t have 100% confidence in it so I sent pictures to Eastwood. They replied over two weeks later that I can’t primer over the discoloration. I need to media blast it all off. So what was the point of fast etch? Literally cost me weeks of extra work.

Can any brand of epoxy primer be applied over the fast etch, providing it is neutralized? I have notice on the tech sheet for a Sikkens epoxy that it cannot be applied over a chemical cleaner. Would fast etch be considered a chemical cleaner?

Asked by: 67scoty
This would not be considered a cleaner. We can not guarantee compatibility between our products and brands we do not sell. We would have to advise you to test a small area first or s scrap piece of metal> The surface MUST be neutralized with our PRE or Acetone before applying anything after the use of the Fast Etch.

Will this product work good on a Big Truck Frame to DeRust it?

Asked by: stone
If there is no existing finish down then yes this can be used. You have to remove the temporary protective coating that it leaves behind after before applying anything further though. This can be done by wiping with our PRE or Acetone.

After bead blasting some steel items I either dipped or brushed FE on the parts but the next day there was some bubbly blistering and it had a tacky feel. Was this because I failed to wipe the items or is my FE getting old?

Asked by: D Hess
That would be dried up fast etch residue that was not wiped off.

I'm using this on bare steel after stripping with the Eastwood wheel like KT did in the video. After sitting for a couple weeks, will I need to sand the entire bare steel panel or just wipe with Pre and prime?

Asked by: Kenny
What i had to do is re- Apply fast etch (re-activate chemicals) then use Acetone wiping panel the same as you would W&G remover.

Optiflow epoxy over metal prepped with Fast Etch: Stripped to metal, sanded, Fast Etch then wiped off to light film which dried. Priming a couple weeks later. Do I need to reactivate or can I Pre then roll Opti?

Asked by: Marc
You will need to neutralize by applying PRE or Acetone to the surface and wiping clean before proceeding with the instructions to prep the surface for the Epoxy primer.

I coated the floor pans with Fast Etch. Do I need to top coat this with a rust incapacitator? The interior carpet and door panels will be covering the surface.

Asked by: LilMike
Fast Etch is designed to dissolve rust then leave behind a temporary protective coating- not a permeant one. The surface should be properly sealed off. To do this you need to first neutralize the protective coating that Fast Etch leaves behind by wiping it down with our PRE or Acetone, then it can be sealed with something such as one of our Encapsulators.

Have you heard of customers using this to protect metal after media blasting but before ceramic coating like Cerakote? This can be neutralized with acetone after application correct?

Asked by: 3Bobs
A better option for this application would be our After Blast found here: https://www.eastwood.com/ew-after-blast.html

Asked by: Mike
The protective coating this leaves behind after use needs to be neutralized first with PRE or Acetone and then yes- you can.

Do I need to re sand the metal after using fast etch before priming?

Asked by: Moparman
It depends on the scenario. If the surface was not sanded and you are applying a primer that requires a mechanical abrasion then yes- sanding still has to be done. You want to ensure you neutralize the temporary protective coating this leaves behind by using our PRE before and after sanding.

After 30 minutes should the remaining wet fat etch solution be wiped off or allowed to dry? What if PRE isn't currently at hand?

Asked by: bluneon
That should be wiped off and not allowed to dry. If pre is not available then we recommend using acetone.

What will fast etch do to fiberglass body filler

Asked by: Juanjjcam
Fast Etch (19416) is a Phosphoric acid product designed to react to and remove iron oxide (rust) from metal and leave a Zinc Phosphate coating to protect the metal. Fast Etch should have minimal if no effect on fiberglass filler. If you get Fast Etch on your Fiberglass filler remove it as soon as possible by wiping..

I used the fast etch on my 1940 Olds hood. One side looks great ,the other has white streaks in the pitted area! Is this a problem?

Asked by: JohnC
I used a scotch brite pad with it and it was pretty effective. I went it then scrubbed then wet again. Had drip pans below and reused the dissolver.

All I need is acetone to neutralize the fast etch right before I prime the metal correct? No need to deal with water to neutralize it? This will work with your epoxy primer?
