Eastwood UNDERHOOD BLACK® Matte Aerosol 11 oz

Product Overview:

Description

UNDERHOOD BLACK® Matte is the correct shade of black, having just the right matte finish many older car manufacturers used on radiator supports, inner fenders, firewalls, underhood brackets, and other parts. Hardware store black paints are either too thick, too glossy, or the wrong color. Just clean, degrease, and prepare the parts well, then spray on for a "factory-like" finish. This acrylic lacquer withstands up to 250° F and goes on thin for a smooth finish that will not hide surface details. Made in the USA. Coverage approx 6 sq ft. 5%-9% Gloss Level.

Application Tips

Use Underhood Black for the correct matte black finish used on inner fender, fire walls, brackets, and more on many cars. Underhood Black is an acrylic lacquer and withstands up to 250 degrees F. Use PRE Painting Prep (10041 Z) to remove residual grease/oil before painting. Use Self Etch Primer (16014 Z) Aerosol or (16009 ZP) Quart on clean metal surfaces. Note: Underhood Black is a Lacquer Paint. Do not use with ENAMEL primers. Use these products in a well ventilated area, or use a respirator.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from understand the product This paint is lacquer based, it is harder than enamel that is why it can chip easier than regular rattle can paint. When restoring cars I use this paint for odds and ends brackets, inner fenders and firewall walls with great results. you need to know the product so your not disappointed, Don't use this on parts that get a lot of abuse, use enamel instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great finish I have a 65 mustang that had a neglected engine area and the need for a 347 stroker... While the engine was out my friend convinced me to detail the engine compartment. I bought this Eastwood product on Eastwoods reputation and my previouse experience with rust treatments from Eastwood. By the way they are great as well... With a little cleaning and scuffing with a scotch bright pad I was able to make a huge difference in the look of my project. It covers well, is forgiving and drys quickly. The spray nozzle on the can is way better than your average spray can. It really lays down a nice pattern. Two cans did my engine area but I bought three. It has a soft kind of glow and sets off the engine nicely. It looks correct as a finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Coverage In the past I used another satin black, but that formula seems to have changed and is now too glossy. I find this Eastwood Matte Black to be the perfect underhood finish. I love the broad spray that covers well with a light coating that make it easy to lay on without drips!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A+ Finish I've restored quite a few cars experimenting with under hood coatings finished to show like original. Eastwood Black Matte underhood coating has seemed to be the best so far, and definitely going to use on future projects. The product lays out thin, in which gives you a very even finish after a few coats which is extremely helpful in getting no runs or uneven 'blotchy' areas. And when finished looks great, will buy again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from does it all this product does just what is supposed to do gives you the perfect finish at a great price

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 1 Very quality product. Sprayed and laid out very smooth.
Date published: 2013-05-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I find this "matte" finish is more like a very low gloss that is perfect for under the hood (i.e., firewall, inner fenders). I've tried the low gloss version but found it to be too glossy for me. I love this matte finish because the slight sheen looks great and it doesn't detract from the engine.
Date published: 2013-02-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the finish you're looking for... I sprayed my engine compartment/inner fenders/radiator support with this paint and the finish is virtually identical to the factory color and sheen. I am not aware of any other aerosol paint on the market that will get this close to OEM. My favorite thing about this paint is its resistance to oily fingerprints. You can clean oils off of this paint without them staining (unlike all other low gloss paints I've tried). I didn't have any problems with the cans or nozzles (I've used 6 cans now), nor did I have any issues with variations in the sheen. The paint dries wildly fast and lays down smooth because it's on the thinner side (I suspect it's this way to obtain the unique finish). Use a black primer to reduce the number of coats you'll need to cover. For reference, I needed 1.5 cans to paint the radiator support on my Chevy K10.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very durable Sprayed engine compartment, air cleaner and misc. parts. Looks just like factory finish. Got some chemical cleaner spilled on it. thought it was a goner, didnt hurt it at all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect color Perfect color, coverage could be better...order 2X what you think you will need. This is not a one or two coat product but it is very forgiving due to the density. Four star rating because the finished product turns out perfect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exact sheen / duarbility I was looking for Prior to buying this product, I saw a guys review where he said he'd bought 15+ cans of the stuff and I thought to myself... wow, that's excessive. I'm now on my 12th with no end in sight. They should offer it in quarts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Under the Hood Mate Black finish I have a 1967 442 Cutlass Supreme. It is a frame of restored car. The motor out of the car and being rebuilt. I am restoring everything under the hood. The Eastwood Mate Black finish has worked very good for everything that I have needed for. I have used the Mate Black Finish combined with the 2 -K High Temp. Clear as a top coat. Both have worked Beautifully for me. Thanks Alot Mike

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good - But Could be Much Better This paint has the best correct finish / gloss compared to OE but being Lacquer has little resistance to scrapes or chemicals. Attention Eastwood's - Best if this was available in a Urethane for durability!! I'd keep several cans for spares / touchups.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Paint looks good I have had good results using the underhood black matte & semi gloss. I have painted bumper brackets, pulleys, steering column, p/s brackets, all looking very good. Use black primer to extend the paint coverage in the can. have not had chipping problems..just ordered more for wheel fender wells & firewall for 66 GTO..suface prep is everything when painting... "the paint is only going to perform as good as the surface your bonding it to", old painter's rule.
Date published: 2013-03-11
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Finish I've used this product extensively on a '69 Z-28 restoration, and have had good results. I have not experienced any of the quality issues stated in the other reviews, and agree with the review by CDK concerning its application and amount used. My only complaint would be that I wish the product went a little farther than it does. I did the radiator support with one can using black primer as the base, but would have liked to do one more light coat before the can ran out.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Eastwood Underhood Matte Black Very thin coverage per spray. Requires several coats to completely cover the underlying surface.
Date published: 2021-07-25
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice gloss but chips easily I'm using this paint for some aluminum engine panels for my kit car. The shade and gloss are right on, but the problem I've found is that the paint chips easily. It doesn't take much for it to flake off.
Date published: 2011-10-16
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Underhood Black Spray Can I have no complaints about the paint itself. But you would think for the price you would get a decent spray can to dispence it with. Better start excersizing your finger now. It is HARD to use. Even with a trigger attachment you get worn out. After half a can you cant keep the spray going due to fatique. Average paint in a super cheap can only gets 3 stars.
Date published: 2011-05-29
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not fast drying. I bought this because they said it was fast drying. I am using for the underside of my hood. I wanted to spray a coat and then sand it to get out imperfections then another light coat. I wanted to put the hood on the next day. It takes 24 to 48 hours to dry fully. At this rate it would take me a week to get the hood done and on the car. I am now looking for a better paint.

Questions & Answers

Can the aerospray matte clear be applied over underhood matte black for fluid resistance without changing appearance?

Asked by: Bob123456
Eastwood Underhood Black Matte (12032Z) is an Acrylic lacquer paint. Do not spray over Enamel primers and do not top coat with Enamel or Urethane paints. Eastwood Aero-spray matte clear(14148Z) is a 2 part component Urethane type spray paint that has the potential to lift the Acrylic Lacquer paint.

I am looking for paint for the landau top portion of my 1959 Imperial restoration. Original was a matte or semigloss that finished out to exactly imitate naugahyde. That is no longer available, but I am thinking your textured underhood paint might work

The underhood black that we handle was designed for the OEM look of the classic car under hood. To get the paint your looking for we would suggest trying Year One, or Classis Industries. https://www.yearone.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7dO-5cK46AIVxIVaBR1wPQJPEAAYASAAEgJixvD_BwE https://www.classicindustries.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMItebh9cK46AIVBW6GCh0UngkqEAAYASAAEgLfIPD_BwE

This would not be recommended. This is a non catalyzed lacquer based coating. It will not offer any where close to the protection or durability as the Rat Rod Satin paint you already have down.

Hello -- I need to refinish a metal fuel injection rail that has a few small areas of corrosion. Is this the correct product for that? If so, what primer should I use? If not, can you recommend an alternative and primer?

Asked by: WRKO
Since our underhood black is good up to 250 degrees that should be perfectly fine to use on a fuel rail. After removing the corrosion our self etch primer will be a perfect base primer.

What paint should be used on the underneath of a hood on a 1968 Firebird I know it is black? Also what can be used on a driveshaft?

Asked by: Burt
Our Underhood Black is formulated to match most OEM engine bays. As for the driveshaft, the Underhood Black will work very well. You could also go with a 2K Satin Black on the driveshaft, that will give you a better chip resistance. The Item # for that is 14146Z.
