How long does Plasti Dip last?

The key to making Plasti Dip last for at least three years – without the need for retouching – is to make sure it’s applied properly in the first place. Plasti Dip is very durable and won’t lose its bond, but two things will help determine how long it, in fact, can last. The first is the distance you hold the can from the surface as you spray. The second is the number of coats you spray on the surface. So please follow directions closely. Feel free to spray-on a refresher coat of Plasti Dip at any time.

How well will Plasti Dip hold up to the elements (sun, rain, snow, salt, etc.)?

Whether it’s the hot sun beating down its UV rays on your Plasti-Dipped surface or the constant battering by ice, rain and abrasive road salt, Plasti Dip resists them all. That would explain why many users dip their car wheels into Plasti Dip (or brush it on) before winter’s worst has a chance to eat away at the metal.

back»

How long does Plasti Dip last on rims?

Wheels face harsher conditions than the rest of your car, as they come into contact more often with mud, ice, snow and salt. As such, it may last only a year or two even with proper application. But even with this potentially shorter lifespan, it is a great temporary measure for winter driving. You can also use it to evaluate how a certain finish will look on your rims before actually painting or powder coating.

back»

Will Plasti Dip hold up to heat and racing?

Plasti Dip can resist temperatures up to 200°F, and has been known to handle the heat and abuse produced at racing or rally car events. However, heat resistance really depends on how long Plasti Dip is exposed to that heat and how you expect the coating to perform in that heat. In general, 1) if the coating will not be subject to impacts, 2) it’s not expected to resist abrasion or chemicals, and 3) if it’s just for a short amount of time, most Plasti Dip surfaces would be able to handle temperatures outside the listed range. Always test first.

back»

How does Plasti Dip hold up to gasoline?

Since Plasti Dip is a solvent-based coating, it does not hold up well to gasoline. Therefore, you must be careful when filling your gas tank or working with gasoline around a Plasti Dip surface. Thinners and other solvents will also damage Plasti Dip.

back»

Does Plasti Dip peel off?

When you want it to, Plasti Dip actually does peel off. But one reason Plasti Dip might be hard to remove is if it was applied in too thin a coat. If the layer of Plasti Dip is too thin, it will tear into several pieces as you try to peel it off, making removal a real headache. To make removing Plasti Dip easier, add another coat (4 to 5 coats in total would be very helpful), because Plasti Dip adheres best to itself! That added strength of an additional layer lets you peel it all off in one piece. Those added layers also add durability while it’s still in place.

back»

How many coats of Plasti Dip should I apply?

The more, the better – both for increased durability and easier peel-off when you’re ready for that. Surfaces that will be exposed to harsher conditions (like wheels and other car surfaces in snow and ice, under the harsh sun or driving over gravel) stand to benefit from additional coats of Plasti Dip. In any case, the suggested minimum is 4-5 coats.

back»

How should I prep my wheels or car before dipping or brushing-on?

You want to make sure the surface is as clean and free of grease, oil, dirt, debris or wax as possible, so we’d suggest using Eastwood PRE Paint Prep. Most items you plan on coating don’t require priming because the Plasti Dip shrinks around the item as it dries. But in extreme conditions, or when applying Plasti Dip on a large metal surface, we recommend primer. Use Plasti Dip® Primer or a high-quality acrylic automotive-type primer. Rust-Oleum® primer is not recommended.

back»

Can I expect Plasti Dip to work exactly the same on every surface?

Short answer: maybe. For most surfaces, Plasti Dip works just as you’d expect, but there are situations where Plasti Dip might not do that. Those situations might depend on how old the car is, the condition of the clear coat used and whether the surface already has a DIY paint job. These and other factors could affect the way the Plasti Dip bonds, peels or covers. Most of you can expect a predictable and hassle-free experience using Plasti Dip, but you still might want to do a small test spot on the surfaces before you begin.

back»

Could Plasti Dip damage the clear coat already on the surface?

For several years people have used Plasti Dip without problems on car surfaces that have been dipped, peeled and re-dipped. But even with Plasti Dip’s record of success, you should still dip a small test spot on your car first. If your car has ever been repainted, consider longer dip test periods just to be sure. Because every paint shop uses different types and amounts of clear coat, Plasti Dip cannot assure the exact same result on every unique paint job.

back»

How do I clean the Plasti-Dipped areas of my car?

All you have to do is use some soapy water in a bucket and a rag. Or you can use a window cleaner. Whatever you usually use to wash similar materials should work well. But when cleaning your Plasti Dip surface, stay away from thinners and solvents that can damage Plasti Dip, and certainly don’t use gasoline as a cleaner on dried Plasti Dip.

back»

Can I use Plasti Dip as a clear protective bra for the front of my car?

Hundreds of Plasti Dip customers have had the smart idea of using the Original Clear Plasti Dip as a protective bra on their vehicle. After all, no aftermarket car bra can fit as tightly as a dipped car bra! It provides the ultimate front-end protection, “matches” the vehicle color and fits even better than a glove.

back»

Can I use Plasti Dip over headlights and taillights?

In most cases, Plasti Dip peels easily off most lights. However, there seem to be a few types of headlights and taillights that don’t work well with Plasti Dip. To be safe, always mask off headlights and taillights to avoid getting Plasti Dip on them.

back»

Can I apply Plasti Dip Glossifier over non-dipped areas?

Glossifier can be sprayed over non-coated areas to add a glossy finish. However, because Plasti Dip Glossifier is specially formulated to bond with the unique chemical structure of Plasti Dip coatings, it’s not generally recommended for other surfaces.

back»

Does Plasti Dip Glossifier peel off?

Plasti Dip Glossifier will peel off afterwards just like regular Plasti Dip. This means you can switch between a glossy and non-glossy finish.

back»

How far from the surface should I hold the can as I spray Plasti Dip ?

The recommended spray distance is 4 to 5 inches away from the surface…and the key is to keep the can moving!

back»

Can Plasti Dip protect my wheels from winter salt and snow?

Since Plasti Dip is extremely resistant to the worst that winter can throw at it, many people actually dip their vehicle’s wheels and cars specifically to help protect the original surfaces from winter snow, ice and road salt.

back»

Does Eastwood sell gallon sizes of Plasti Dip ?

Eastwood sells Plasti Dip in gallons in a few colors. (We even sell a 5-gallon can of black Plasti Dip in case you’re starting your own dipping business!) Each gallon of Plasti Dip will cover approximately 30 square feet at a thickness of 15mm .

back»

Can Plasti Dip be sprayed with a spray gun?

Yes, you can spray Plasti Dip using a variety of sprayers and spray guns, but it needs to be thinned first. We suggest using xylene, toluene or naphtha mixed in a 1:1 ratio. See our Earlex Spray Station HV3500, the multi-purpose turbine HVLP spray gun system designed for do-it-yourselfers.

back»

Can I even cover a black car in white Plasti Dip ?

Yes, but it’ll take more than the usual amount of Plasti Dip to do it. To turn your black car white, expect to go through more than three gallons of Plasti Dip. Maybe get four or five gallons just to be sure you have enough! (You can always return a never-opened gallon.)

Here’s a “tech tip”: Use a “mid coat” to help with coverage when making a drastic color change (black to white, red to yellow, etc.). Our customers have found that using gray as that “mid coat” seems to help with the color transition, requiring fewer coats to fully hide the original color.

back»

How many gallons of Plasti Dip is necessary to dip a car?

How much Plasti Dip you need depends on the project’s surface area, and what you’re dipping. If you’re “dipping” an entire car, here are some general requirements:

gallonsofdipchart_zpsd211966a
back»

If this is the first time you’re dipping a whole car, or if you’re using one of the lighter colors (white, orange, yellow and so forth), get yourself an extra gallon or two. You don’t want to run out of Plasti Dip in middle of your projects, and you can always return a never-opened gallon.

  31. Hi Carm, We usually suggest a minimum of 4 coats but I’ve found 6+ coats works best. The more coats the item has on it the thicker the coating will be and the less likely it will be to rub off. It also will come off easier in one sheet when peeled if there are 6+ coats.

We’re using plasti-dip for an art project. We’re covering hundreds of glass wine bottles. We’ve put 3 coats but the dip seems to rub off with a little abrasion from a cardboard box. How do we prevent it from rubbing off? More coats or glossifier or something else?

  75. Hi Ric,

Yes it can be used on chrome, but you need to make sure the surface is clean and free of brake dust or any grease/road dirt. Also make sure you’re getting proper build of the dip by adding the proper number of coats.

Can Plasti Dip be used on chrome rims? The reason I’m asking is because I’ve had to re-do each rim twice and it still ended up peeling off. If you could offer a suggestion that would be great.

  85. We can’t say for sure there, the product is very flexible, but we haven’t tested it in chlorine. We have seen it stand up well to the salt used on road in colder climates though!

  90. i want to plasti dip my headrest cusions in my hot tub, they are made of some sort of rubber/foam. will it stick ok and will it withstand 40 degrees Celsius and chlorine?

  91. Jensen,

Unfortunately there isn’t a way to strengthen the product more, in reality even your OEM paint would have chipped/cracked in that situation! The nice thing about the product is that you can touch it up by adding a few more coats around that area to blend it in and it should “disappear”. If it’s a large tear that’s causing the dip to peel around it, you may be better tearing back a larger area and reapplying a few coats to blend it in.

  92. Hi Matt,
Loving the product. Couple issues so far though. Did my rims and they turned out great. Then decided to do my plastic bumpers ( front and back). Barely a day later, and somebody has bumped my rear bumper and created a small tare and someone pinned me in yesterday on the street parking when I was in a hurry to get to get to work. Bastard had plenty of curb in front of him/her too. Anyways, looks like I have another tare on the front corner now too. I realize that is what bumpers are for, but this is gonna happen alot. Any way to strengthen the stuff more?

  93. Hi Sam,

It will adhere just fine to the flat black paint, but removal will be difficult and it may not peel nearly as nicely as it does off of glossy paint.

  94. How well does plasti dip stick to a flat black paint job? And will it remove the same since its not a regular type of paint with a clear coat?

  95. How well does plasti dip stick to a flat black paint job? And will it remove the same since its not a regular type of paint with a clear coat?

  96. Hi Wes,

It depends on the size of your fairings. 3-4 cans would be a minimum to coat most fairings. Clear coat may help protect the plasti dip, but it could also affect how easily the dip peels when you want to remove it.

  97. Hi, I want to plasti dip my motorcycle fairings. I was wondering how many cans of primer and colored plasti dip I would need for my fairings. Also, can I spray clear coat over the plasti dip, to make it last longer?

  98. You would need 4-6 Gallons realistically of product. You could mix that between color and pearlizer or other top coats if need be. The Earlex gun will spray the dip just fine. We normally leave the vehicle over night to let it full dry before handling. You can normally wait 15-20 minutes between coats.

  99. i have a 2015 mustang but i really hate the color, so i want to plastic dip it bright red or white. now how much would i need? and would the Earlex Spray Station work with plastic dip? how long does it take to dry also? thank you

  101. If you wash and wax the paint before applying you shouldn’t have any issues.

  102. We would not suggest applying any plasti dip to your headlights.

  103. headlights….

hi, what about if I put 2-3 coats of clear plasti dip, and then just 1 or maybe 2 coats of another solid color, and maybe other 1-2 coats of clear??

just want to give a little color to my headligths, I imagine that this may work…please let me know if I wrong, thanks in advance

  104. Hey there, I own a 2015 Hyundai Veloster Turbo in Matte Grey. I was wondering if spraying plasti dip over this could damage the finish of the paint if I used it on something like trim?

  105. Depending on the quality of adhesion of the primer it could cause the primer to peel when you peel the blue dip off eventually.

  106. I want to dip my blazer blue, I it currently has six coats of crap on it I have been sanding and primering with rustoleum, I didn’t know it was bad but what will happen if I put the blue on the rustoleum white primer?

  108. Can i plastic dip some of my plastic underneath the hood of my 2007 Acura TL

  109. Hi Olly,

Plastic/Rubber coatings will adhere to most any surface but they only peel nicely from smooth, shiny surfaces. We’ve found that they peel less easily when applied directly over primer.

  110. Hi Dari, If you use quality masking tape you should be able to peel the tape without lifting, avoid using cheap masking tapes.

  111. Darin Hendrickson

I only want to dip sections of my wheels and leave some parts alone. Can I tape those parts and peel the tape after I dip? Or will I have to cut around the tape before peeling it off. I’m worried when I start peeling the tape the dip is gonna lift off the wheel next to the tape. Thanks

  112. Hi,can plastidip/flexidip be applied over this type of primer (Two-pack high solids polyacrylic filler, chromate-free primer) without reactions and will it still peel off easy enough, after been left on the car a while?
At the moment I am saving for a proper paint job,but wanted a plastidip finish for now. Thanks

  113. i am unable to purchase whitewall tires for my motorcycle, the tire companies that make this particular tire(which only fits this motorcycle) do not make a whitewall in this tire. So i experimented a little with old tires before i tried on my new ones. well nothing worked, so i seen a video of a guy peeling plasti dip off a tool, well i noticed the elasticity of the plasti dip, so i prepped my new tires, grinding all lettering flush and cleaning, masked then sprayed 3 coats , let dry for 3 days and rode bike, no cracking as of yet and i’ve rode about 600 miles. the only problem is that the whitewalls turn a tan color and nothing is able to clean it back to white completely, so far alcohol does the best it does take some of the tan color out, I’m thinking that the road heat is heating the plasti-dip and either slightly burning it or its heating it and the fine road dirt is turning it tan colored. the tan is more prevalent towards the outer portion of tire. Does any one have have any suggestions how to keep these White? Thank You!

Thank You!

  115. I have a vespa super GTS , I want to know how many CANS I need to cover the whole scooter.

  116. You should check with your paint shop as it depends on the brand and type of paint they use before you can apply vinyl graphics, pin striping, or a rubber coating like Elastiwrap or Plastidip.

  117. Those spots may be where you didn’t get proper coverage. Could have been you were’t overlapping correctly or hitting that area completely with your spray pattern each time you went over it.

  119. It does not. Spray with a 1.8 tip ad you can spray without thinning.

  120. hi..just want to know ,with the new pre thinned plasti dip spray formula does it still need 2 be thinned if useing an air compressor and air gun

  121. I just plasti diped my car matte black for the first time. It has dried over night in the garage and now its in the sun there light grey almost faded looking spots. Know what this is did I do something wrong. I layed 5 coats down. Did grill, hood, roof, wing used 2 gallons. Was that enough?

My car is at the shop getting a new paint job. How long should I wait before doing some pladtidip racing stripes? I have been trying to get this info but people say different things. I would really appreciate if I could get an answer for that.

  124. Yes you can. We advise to use a 1.8 to 2.0 tip for sprayable plastidip.

  125. We have no experience with mixing brands of rubber coatings. Sorry!

  126. Home Depot only had flexi dip glossifier, not plasti dip gloss. Is it okay to use flexi dip glossifier on top of regular plasti dip paint?

  127. Can I use my hvlp gun I already have to paint a car normally with plasti dip

  128. I saw outing Daley stripes on a 1966mustang its very hot here I can’t get the tape off fast enough to keep it from teairing the sides?

  129. I saw outing Daley stripes on a 1966mustang its very hot here I can’t get the tape off fast enough to keep it from teairing the sides?

  130. Hi, yes it is completely possible to do that as with traditional automotive paints. The hard part is getting good, crisp hard lines when taping up designs. You may want to practice your technique with types of masking tape and when to peel it to get the best edges as we’ve had mixed results.

  131. Hi, I have noticed that most times when you dip a car it usually cover most of the entirety of the car or whole segments. I was wondering if it is possible to create patterns with plasti dip on the car, or is it only to be used with whole segments? If one were to do such a thing would there be risks? Such as it being much easier to peel since it doesn’t cover whole segments or if left on to long would the weather cause a noticeable difference in the parts that weren’t dipped as opposed to the ones that were? Thanks in advance!

  132. It will help some, as it helps things “bounce” off of them since it does have rubber-type properties, but any major abrasion or contact over extended periods of time will wear ANY coating off.

  134. Mine came off of my rims 🙁 we had a 2 hour ride on the interstate after it was fully dry. We were fine at our destination and drove another 2 hours . getting caught in puddles that slide the car back and get back home and wtf? 3 of the 4 rims peeled their self only on the lip. I would recommended not to use index cards on camered rims and smaller rims because I think there needs to be that bond holding the dip fully around the rim.

  135. I was wondering how plasti dip would handle a lot of abrasion from grass? I’m fixing up a quad and I was thinking about putting a few coats on the A-arms in the front because the paint is worn of of them from all of the contact with foliage on trails and such.

  136. You can apply over the stickers, but you may see the outline of the stickers through the finish.

  137. Any major defects in the paint will show through to some degree. The plasti dip will stick but you may see the texture from the rust through the finish.

  139. We are planning to plasti dip my boyfriend’s Honda Del Sol. It has several rust spots. What I’m wondering is if if the plasti dip will stick or not, or if it will look bad.

  140. Hi, i just bought a bike frame, but it has the stickers from the brand (giant) on it, do i have to remove them to apply plastidip? or can i apply plastidip over the stickers?

  141. Yes you can dip most anything! Similar process to dipping a car.

  142. Could you dip a bmx bike

  145. I’m planning to apply hash stripes to my car using PlastiDip. My car is white and the hash stripes will be black and I want to use glossifier on the stripes. How long should I wait between applying the black and the glossifier?
If I have to let the black dry before applying the glossifier, will that have an effect on getting a clean edge when I remove the masking tape?

  146. hi,
I’m new to this dipping idea and just wanted to know, about how much product would it require to do a good coat on my tahoe? Plastidip and elastiwrap numbers please

  147. Your wheels likely have a factory clear coat that you can apply the plasti dip directly over top of. Just make sure your wheels are free of any waxes, grease, road debris, or brake dust before spraying.

  149. Plasti Dip needs to be applied in multiple coats/layers to get the proper film build so it will peel easily. Do not try to achieve this build in one coat.

  150. I didn’t spray the plasti dip on in layers will it look bad ?

  151. I’m about to plasti dip my stock alloy Nissan Xterra rims do I need to worry about the protective coat on the rims already or do I just spray it right on.

  152. Hi Lyn,

Yes that is the beauty of rubber coatings is that they can be peeled off to reveal the original color of the vehicle.

  154. If I plastidip over the existing paint, can I still peel it off if I decide I don’t like the look?

  155. We haven’t tested the maximum capacity of Plasti-Dip clear base, you may want to contact the manufacturer directly for that info.

  156. Hi Terry,

I’d suggest 4-5 gallons dip for the body, if you’re using a pearlizer or a clear coat you can could do 80-90% gallons of color and then a final 10-20% of the top gloss coat. I’d suggest 2 gallons to do the roof and all associated parts.

  158. Hi Matt
I want to dip my short wheel base Land Rover defender TD5 with a red/burgundy colour.
Original paint job is Land Rover green.
Want to do the roof, wheel arches and trim in black.
    Say 6 coats.
How many gallons of each colour would you expect I will need.
    Cheers.

  159. If i wanted to make a custom color, can i use the clear and add 844 universal tints? What is the tint capacity of a clear base?

  160. You can apply additional coats to cover up the damaged areas or tape off and attempt to reflow in new dip on the damaged areas, but it isn’t as forgiving as traditional automotive paint for blending.

  162. If applied correctly it won’t peel or burn under normal temperatures seen by headlights, but we’d advise against applying it to headlights due to the decrease in light output once coated.

  163. will plasti dip peel off or burn if you apply them on headlights

  164. I had bought my car and the wheels had already been dipped. However some of it has came off over time. My question is can I do touch ups on it or do I have to take it all off and start over?

  165. With Plasti-Dip we’d recommend 3-4 gallons for the entire car. Eastwood Elastiwrap would be about half that.

  167. I was thinking on dipping my 97′ Legacy with a nice deep blue as opposed to getting a traditional paint job for it. I’d want it to last for a while, so how many gallons would you suggest to take it from black?

  168. Yes, generally the sprayable Plastidip has been thinned to allow for easy spraying through a paint gun. Some people thin further to get a desired finish, but it does take some testing.

  169. Have you tried a Claybar

  171. If I’m using a HVLP gun and spraying the “sprayable” plastidip, do I still need to reduce it? is the “sprayable” plastidip different than the original plastidip meant for dipping tools? i wouldn’t want to further reduce something thats already been reduced. thanks

  172. Hi, I’m not sure if you answered this question yet, but my car door handle has a sensor where as long as i have my key in my pocket I can just grab the door handle to unlock the car. If the door handle is white, and i want to plasti-dip it black, would the plasti dip interfere with the door handle’s ability to sense my hand and stop it’s ability to unlock the door?

  173. We’d advise 4-6 gallons of Plasti-Dip to cover your car.

  175. Hi, I want to plasti dip my Opel Astra G Coupe. At the moment it’s gold/yellow. I was wondering how many gallon I would need? I want it to get a darkish grey. I was planning on putting Gunmetal grey first and then a couple of layers of anthracite grey to darken it. What combination is the best regarding the number of gallons to get the job done? Thanks

  176. Hi, Yes that is a great use for the product! The rubber in the coating makes the cured product resistant to road chips and light damage that can occur from normal driving.

  178. I have a 2015 GMC 3500 Denali Dually that is Black. I am thinking about dipping the rear fenders. Do you think that will protect from small rocks or debris chipping the paint?

  179. We have’t tested the compatibility of those two products together so we can’t give you a good answer. I’d suggest doing a test on a sample or scrap piece of metal to see how it applies and holds up.

  180. just wanted to know if i can use the glossifier plasti dip on my matte black flexidip on my rims or does it have to be the same product such as flexidip gloss? so i just want to know if i can use gloss plastidip with flexidip matte black

  181. Cool. It definitely does. I currently have a 1.4mm, so I will go buy another. I saw how you guys suggested to dilute the dip, but I’ve also heard a 60/40 mix, with Naphtha..
Thanks again.. I just want the best finish possible.

  183. You just need the color you want to use and a good wheel cleaner to take any dirt or brake dust off of the wheels before you spray.

  184. A gravity fed gun works well if you use a larger tip like 1.6-1.8. Hope that helps!

  185. I see you can spray plastidip with a HVLP spray gun. I have a gravity fed HVLP, would that be okay to use. I have seen others use it, but figured I would like to double check.
    Thanks

  186. I have black rims on my car and never been dipped before I want to dip them bronze what do I need to do this?

  187. I have black rims on my car and never been dipped before I want to dip them bronze what do I need to do this?

  188. Hi Dustin,

You would need to tape off the face of the wheel and anything you don’t want to get white (including openings in the wheels that may allow overspray on brake parts). You can apply your desired number of coats of color first and then apply a few coats of glossifier or clear if you’re applying with an aerosol.

  189. Im new to the dipping im wanting to do my 20″ aftermarket wheels , the wheels are black with a chrome lip , i want to change the chrome to white to match my white and black vehicle how would you suggest the best way to do this and i seen comments aboutbclear coat i want white paint to be durable to brake dust how do i mix using aerosole

  190. The glossifier is a personal preference, you could intermix it with your last few coats of color, or do a few coats of it alone after you’ve applied the color. After 3-4 coats of glossifier it doesn’t really help it get any glossier, just the film thickness builds.

  191. Hi John,

It will stick to spray paint, but it may remove the spray paint when you go to peel the plasti-dip back off again, just a warning!

  192. I spray painted my grill but I don’t like how it came out will plasti dip stick to spray paint

  193. I spray painted my grill but I don’t like how it came out will plasti dip stick to spray paint

  194. You can plastidip the vehicle, but because primer isn’t super smooth/shiny like over a clear coated paint job, it may tend to peel the primer off, especially if it isn’t fully cured before applying.

  195. An extreme high gloss like a buffed out auto paint is nearly impossible with rubber coatings. You can get a gloss effect, but an extremely high gloss isn’t possible currently.

  196. Plastidip works best over shiny, smooth surfaces, but it will adhere to almost anything! So yes it will adhere, but it may not peel in large sheets like when applied over a smooth, shiny surface.

  199. I have some paint chipping away from my original paint on my truck. I want to plasti dip it black and make it an extreme high gloss. What do you recommend I do to make sure I get the right look?

  202. How well does it hold up after 100 degree summer’s? I’ve seen many people have problems with peeling it after a hot summer. What’s your experien? How many summers can ir withstand before it becoming difficult to peel or not peeling perfectlynormally?

  203. Yes Ron You can, if applied correctly it should hold up. Although if a tear or rip has occurred, the pressure and brushes will cause it to peel.

  204. Hi Matt,
im looking to plastic dip my 1975 beetle a classic red and white i think ive worked out how much plasti dip i need to make it work, but how much glossifier would i need to finish it all of with a nice shine? 206. If I plastidip my car, can i still take it through a car wash?

  207. Wow, I didn’t realize plasti dip could last as long as three years. I have some friends that plasti dip their subies and sports cars during the winter to keep the paint protected. They usually scrape it off in the summer though. I like the look of the plasti dipped cars and would be interested in keeping it on year round I think.

  208. With care and good application skills it can be close to invisible, but it isn’t 100% invisible.

  209. Can you wax over plasti dip? If I spray clear on hood for a bra, will it come out smooth looking against the paint line?

  210. Can you wax over plasti dip? If I spray clear on hood for a bra, will it come out smooth looking against the paint line?

  211. Elastidip by nature does normally leave a smoother finish, but spray technique definitely comes in to play as well. We have noticed a smoother and glossier finish with Elastiwrap over Plastidip in our tests. Elastiwrap does come ready-to-spray, but some installers do thin it to attempt to get ultra-smooth results.

  212. Plastidip will stick, but it won’t peel as well as from a smooth/shiny surface which could cause primer lift if not careful.

  213. With the correct tip on your spray gun you could use the same guy you’d use to spray traditional automotive paint.

  215. Hey I was wondering if I could use a regular spray gun? Dont really have the money right now to buy a new gun.

  216. 2-3 Gallons will normally suffice on a smaller truck like that. Hope that helps!

  220. Hi Matt, I have a 1998 S10 4wd extended cab. How many gallons of Plasti-dip would I need to paint it, Matte black???

  221. The process depends on your vehicles paint condition. Normally you DO NOT want to sand your paint before applying a rubber coating. If the paint is decent on your parts I would just wash and clean the area thoroughly and then you can apply the product.

  222. You can mix the additives into the clear and apply it with a spray gun. Otherwise no special requirements are needed. Please email our order team for pricing quotes on overseas shipping: orderhelp@eastwood.com

  223. Hi i have a 2014 dodge charger i wanted to know how much plasti dip i need just for the hood and roof trunk

  224. Hi i have a 2014 dodge charger i wanted to know how much plasti dip i need just for the hood and roof trunk

  225. Hey, I was just wondering what special requirements would I need to also apply pearlescent powder (I found it on the plasti dip website) to the plasti dip paint and what are the postage costs to get around 3 gallons of dip to Australia ? Cheers

  226. I want to plastic dip my Hood and Trunk. And make it last. I was told to sand it using 1000 Sandpaper, then thinner. Make it clean, spray Plastic Dip, and then put a Sealant at the end. Does anyone have a better idea? Or this one good?? I need help.

  227. Either option is acceptable!

  228. Do I have to use the Plasti Dip® Glossifier or can I use any glossifier on top of my plasti dip coats ?

  229. Generally the dip will peel easily if there is a hard break between the two parts. Using an exacto knife or masking as good as you can is always advised though!

  230. Hello I have seen a lot of videos where they pastidip a wheel with the tire on the wheel still or like an emblem the never use a knife to trim off the excess like where tire meets wheel you peel it off tire but wont that also peel it off the wheel?? I never see anyone use an exacto knife anytime

  231. Hi Tom,

For a gloss finish I would just use a few coats of gloss and that’s it. If you’d like to get satin finish matte and gloss clear can be mixed to achieve a custom finish.

  232. Matt, if you’re looking for a gloss coat do you mix the matte and gloss (to essentially make a gloss paint) or do you use matte first then extra coat a of gloss?

  233. Jennifer Rodriguez

I plasti dip my rims yesterday and it rain thru out the night still raining. Will it peel off? I would like the feedback thanks.

  234. OK, I have used Rsutoleum high build black primer and self etching primer on my car after completing bits and pieces of bodywork. I have heard Plasti Dip will not work over this primer? What do i do?

  235. Hi, Yes you can spray a convential clear coat over it, but we haven’t experimented enough to say whether it will effect the durability of the product or not.

  236. PlastiDip generally leaves a visible surface texture while ElastiDip seems to claim that it is made specifically for vehicles and looks more like real paint. Is there a noticable difference in the final quality/smoothness of the ElastiDip over PlastiDip? Also, does ElastiDip have a significant amount of UV protection over PlastiDip? Finally, is ElastiDip ready to spray or does it require thinning?

  237. Can you use a regular clear coat spray overtop of plasti dip on wheels? Will it help prolong the overall condition of the plasti dip?

  238. Awesome! Feel free to share some pics on our Facebook!

  239. Hi, Yes you can, it just may take some additional coats to get the black hidden completely.

  240. Hey, I was wondering if I can spray white plasti dip over my black plasti dip on my rims?

  241. i dipped my black 2015 Ford Explorer limited wheels, and all exposed chrome areas today awesome product. Wheels and all areas 7 coats.

  242. In this instance, they normally mean too few coats. You need to put enough coats on so that it can easily peel off when you want to remove it.

  243. hey there i know that the first coat needs to be about 50% transparent but is that for every coat after that too…I know people keep talking about if you put it on too thin then it’s hard to get off but are they saying too thin meaning the coats are too thin or meaning not enough coats all together.might seem like a silly question but I am confused on it..

  244. Hi Felipe,

We’d suggest 3-4 cans to do the roof of your car. Generally waiting 15-20 minutes between coats is best.

  245. Hi Brandon,

If you have 4 coats on already you can just go over it all the next time around and it should be just fine. The most important part is that you have a good build.

  246. Hi, I haven’t seen this question anywhere. I dipped part of my front bumper cover today (it was too windy to do a perfect job, so I hurried). It turned out good, but I was only able to do the middle of the bumper.
Can I go back tomorrow or another day and apply more dip? Is there such thing as too many coats? I have 4 on just the middle of the bumper cover now, so should I tape that off when I do the rest or can I just spray over the existing dip?

  247. Hi Matt, i want to paint the roof of an IS350 2014 with satin black.
I would like to know how do you get that color, how much time you have wait for the coatings to get dry and how many cans exactly i need?

    thanks

  248. Yes it is available in multiple colors. Find our full line of plastidip and elastiwrap here: http://www.eastwood.com/paints/rubber-coating.html

  249. Hi Mego,

No base is needed, just make sure your existing finish is clean and isn’t flaking or peeling!

    Thanks,

  250. I have a black Merc that I want to dip in Matte Black. Do I need to base it before I start dipping? If so with what?

  251. Is Plastidip available in different colors such as white?

  252. Hi Andre,

You can simply leave the plastidip matte black as-is, the clear coat will make it more glossy.

  253. hello i have a question, i just bought the matte black camo plasti dip and im using it on my motorcycles battery cover which was chrome do i need to use a clear coat and if so which kind would i use to keep it matte black and not gloss

  254. Unfortunately the coats won’t peel off separately, so it will peel all at once. Best best is to tape off areas around where you want to spray another color.

  255. HI,

I was wondering if there was any special procedure to peeling one layer of dip off of another layer. I want to do my body one color, and then do detailing (badges, mirrors, etc) in a different color. Will the dip peel off of itself once the body coat has dried?

  256. Hi, you can email us about shipping internationally to: shurter@eastwood.com

  257. i am about starting up my own car shop and i need a supplier for plastic dips. please do you ship to Nigeria? and what is the cost for gallons?

  258. Elastiwrap while in coast may be more expensive, it has about twice the build as Plasti-Dip so it requires half the product to coat a vehicle. Plasti-Dip would require 5-6 gallons to get optimal coverage on a full-size truck while Elastiwrap would 3-4 gallons. You can also break that up and use 2-3 gallons of your color and 1-2 gallons of clear.

  259. Hi Fernando,

Yes Plasti-Dip and all rubber coatings adhere to most any clean surface. Just make sure you remove any brake dust or road grime before applying the dip.

  260. Hi Wade,

Yes rubber coatings have avery high build and could cause parts to fit much tighter if you take the vehicle apart that far to spray. Because this is a product made to be removed, normally we’d suggest leaving the window rubbers on and tape them up when spraying. This way you have a clean edge that breaks the dip and makes it easier to peel off down the road.

  261. The tire machine may tear the coating depending on how careful the installer is. You can apply additional coats over imperfections, but it is difficult to 100% make it blend and not be seen, but it may be good enough for when standing 5-10 feet away.

  262. We’d suggest 3-4 gallons of Plastidip or 2-3 of Eastwood Elastiwrap. You will also need a spray gun. A turbine style gun works or an HVLP spray gun if you have an air compressor.

    Hope that helps,

    Matt/EW

  263. Just wanted to let you know the protege5 is yellow

  264. Hi Matt. I have a 2002 mazda protege5, i was wondering what i would need to do to plastidip it white

  265. Once I Plasti-Dip my wheels, when I get new tires mounted, will the tire machine tear up the coating and if it does can it be touched up or will I have to re-do the entire wheel to get a smooth finish

  266. I’m concerned with the thickness have there been issues with parts fitting back together(like the window seals)? If door jams are dipped will the rubber door seals wear the dip? How much weight will be added if you put 5-6 coats on an average car? Thanks

  267. I have mb rims which are black powder coated with machined aluminum, will plasti dip stick good? I want to protect them from the winter.

  268. I noticed that your product is more expensive than others in gallons
How manny gallons for a full size pick up?
Also how many gallons of clear to mix with above?

  269. Please send an email request to: orderhelp@eastwood.com and we can get you sorted!

  270. Hi Logan,

We’d suggest around 3-4 cans to be safe. Hope that helps!

    -Matt/EW

  271. Hi,

You can apply it directly over your existing paint. We just suggest giving it a good wash and wax before applying the product.

  272. We’d suggest 3-4 gallons for a car your size.

  273. For the best results we suggest a high end turbine paint sprayer or a nice HVLP spray gun. We have options for both in our online catalog at eastwood.com!

  280. Hi Ryan,

We’d suggest at minimum 2-3 gallons to do the entire car. We’ve had better luck with consistency and spray patterns by using an HVLP paint gun.

    Hope that helps!

  281. Hi
I’m getting ready to paint a 2005 Hyundai Tucson matte black. How many gallons of dip
    Should I get?
I have access to 2 paint guns, A Wagner 570 and a Wagner 590. Which would you suggest?
    Thanks

  282. You may want to try and hold the gun closer. If you’re holding the gun too far away it can cause that. Also make sure you’re doing “wet” coats and not moving to fast when applying.

  283. I get treads or very thick dust when spraying with a hvlp pressure gun at little under 2 bar presure. What do i do wrong ?

  284. We’d normally suggest to buy gallons and use a paint gun or at the least a turbine style household turbine styler paint gun system if you were planning to spray an entire vehicle.

  285. Hi Jesse,

Yes one of those will work, although it may be a little more difficult to get the product to lay as smooth with one of those turbine style household sprayers.

  286. Can I use a big electric sprayer used to paint houses with plasti dip? I believe it’s some kind of wagner.

  289. Bmw 120i how much how many coats fluro green or fluro purple

  290. Hi,

In order to get the proper build to easily remove the product we suggest 6 coats or more of the product.

    Hope that helps!

  291. I have a pretty simple question about putting Glossifier on my 2012 Toyota Camry SE. My car is not dipped will the Glossifier work on my car hood? Also how many 11 oz. aerosol cans of Glossifier will I need? I am trying to protect my car hood from road hazards mostly rocks. How many coats of Glossifier should I apply to achieve this I am assuming 5 coats would be great.

  292. We suggest 3-4 cans to coat your wheels correctly.

  293. guys i been dipping for 3 years now and came across several problems…
If you plan to make your car look aggressive and you add eyebrows.. stop dont do it … well at least for black dip. I did a customers head lights. I did aggressive eyebrows
And i peeled the dip after 3 month and it cracked the headlights and im assuming because black attracts heat.
Also dipped a bmw 2014 red it stained the white bmw red. This is very weird to me that it happened. If anyone knows how to remove these red stains from plasti dip email me please save me from paying a 2k paint job on this beemer.

  294. I am very interested in plasti dipping my stock 17 inch GMC wheels (aluminum) and wondering about how much paint it would take to do this before I ordered it. thank you

  295. Hi Daniel,

If you’re attempting to spray the wheels themselves, I would advise removing the wheel cover or hubcap before spraying. If you’re spraying the wheel cover or hubcap, it may be easier to spray all 4 with them off the vehicle and on the ground or on the bench.

  296. We wouldn’t suggest applying any coating over top of the headlights of a car as it may decrease the final light output.

  297. Hi Marco,

Yes you can mask and tape off areas to create patterns, stripes, and other custom effects just like traditional paint!

  299. Will the plasti dip on on my headlights make it hard for my lights to project light

  300. Daniel Rodriguez

Matt, could you please advise how to spray on wheels that have a cover over the hub and lug nuts.

  301. Hi Jay, we offer a satin clear Elastiwrap aerosol that is similar to what you have. Not sure about the product you have though. See our entire line here: http://www.eastwood.com/elastiwrap

  302. I just sprayed my rims with flexidip “mate black”. Is there a satin clear coat or a satin black flexidip on the market? I bought the spray cans at Home Depot but didn’t see any clear or satin black. Please advise.

  303. Hi, Yes that wouldn’t be a problem, just make sure you mix it in well and shake the paint gun occasionally as you’re spraying the rims to make sure the powder stays floating in the clear. Be sure to post pics when you get it done!

  304. I want to dip my rims black but I was going to also clear coat them I was thinking about mixing some glow in the dark powder into the clear coat. Would this work?
