Weld Through Primer Helps Make a Lasting Repair in Metal
When you’re repairing a vehicle or doing metal fabrication you may need to overlap metal or cover up metal that won’t be accessible ever again. That means that you need to make sure everything is sealed up before you close it all up. Weld Through Primer is a preferred primer used by professionals but is it overkill or is it necessary for a DIY hobbyist?
We can first assure you that Weld Through Primer isn’t a gimmick and actually works! No matter the brand all weld through primers have a few things in common. First they are all mostly zinc based and when applied the zinc covers the bare metal and seals out moisture and rust. Because of their chemical make up weld through primers are conductive and can be welded on or near. If you’re MIG or TIG welding over a resistance spot weld we still suggest cleaning the area you’re welding off to bare metal before welding to give you the cleanest weld. If you’re doing a plug weld you can coat all of the seams and let the weld through primer dry; then clamp the panels and only clean the hole where you’ll be plug welding. This gives you a clean area for a sanitary weld while still retaining the sealed up seams around the weld.
