Application Guidelines for Aerosol High Temp Exhaust Manifold Coatings
When you apply these and most paint coatings there are a few things to keep in mind.
Paint forms a mechanical bond to the surface, keying to surface irregularities. Adhesion is enhanced by roughening the surface. We recommend abrasive blasting (don't use glass beads or medias that tend to smooth the surface) or sanding smooth surfaces like exhaust headers with 80-120 grit sandpaper. NOTE: Roughening the surface is equally important for both old and new surfaces.
Metal is able to trap and hold water and other contaminants. You may have noticed a wet ring around an area you heated for solder work; the heat forces the moisture out. It's beneficial to preheat the surface to drive out this trapped moisture and other contaminants. We recommend heating the manifold or header with a heat gun, propane torch or heat lamp for a few minutes until no more wet areas are noticed.
Paint doesn't like to adhere to greasy or oily surfaces. A thorough spray down (cool surface only!) with Acetone or PRE Painting Prep (10041Z) is recommended to wash away residual oils. It is advisable to allow the solvent to evaporate for about 10 minutes before repeating the heating process. The Heating process is once again necessary because the evaporation of the solvent cools the surface and moisture in the air will condense on the metal.
Air, paint, and surface temperature all play a role in the ease of application, cure, and appearance of the finished surface. Ambient (room) temperature should be between 65-95 degrees F with 50% or less humidity. Note: High humidity can compromise adhesion and appearance. The part and paint temperature should be at the same temperature or slightly warmer.
Step-by-step High Temp Coating Spray Application:
1. Prep per the guidelines mentioned above.
2. Shake can for at least 1 minute and periodically during use.
3. Spray at a distance of 6-10 inches, applying several light coats to avoid drips and runs.
4. Allow 30-60 minutes between coats until full hiding is achieved. All coats must be applied within 2 hours of the previous coat or after 1 week. Heavy applications can lead to reduced coating life. NOTE: This is definitely a case where more is not better. The thicker the coating the less likely it is to expand and contract with the heat-up and cool-down cycles of the exhaust manifold or header.
5. The coating will completely dry within 24 hours. The manifold or header can then be installed on the engine. Once installed run the engine in a well ventilated area for at least 20 minutes to completely cure the coating. NOTE: During this process, the coating will emit potentially harmful vapors - ensure full and proper ventilation.
6. Properly application will yield a finish that adds beauty to the engine compartment for many years.
