Buffing vs. Polishing

Although the works buffing and polishing are often used interchangeably, there are some important differences between the processes. Here’s what you need to know before you start:

  • Buffing utilizes a cloth wheel and compound while polishing involves an abrasive wheel and pad.
  • Polishing is a more aggressive process that removes heavy scratches, weld ridges, pitting and corrosion. Buffing is a finer finishing that removes small-to-medium scratches as well as the polishing lines.
  • Polishing can only be done on metals. Buff wheels can also be used on hard plastics such as polycarbonate, acrylic and TPO.
