Rated 5 out of 5 by from works every time on all rust applications I bought a gallon this a year and halve ago and works great as some Chevron paint I used on a 2 year old truck that was rusting because a sponge material that was placed under the radiator caused to stay wet all of the time. That paint job lasted for 18 years for the life of the truck. This paint was developed by Chevron in 1987 for use on oil rigs in salt water. So far this paint has worked on a truck, iron rails on houses, and HVAC units for a building that were rusting within 5 years of a new install. It is compatible with use as a rust primer under water based Triangle paints that you apply say a green brass color 1st, then add an acid to turn it into a patina green even on houses for the hand rails/porch support. Just be sure to move the paint left over a job to a smaller can that seals tight, use only zylene to thin, and store in a place with a temp. no higher than 75 degrees (no freezing temps. also). I did one of the things mentioned above my painted started to jell at the bottom the can. So to wrap it up, the paint is good on all kinds of applications dealing with rust-not just for restoring cars alone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing product I’m restoring a 1946 Ford Tudor and it’s got some surface rust. I removed the rust and applied the encapsulator and at 1st it didn’t look right, but after it dried it was perfect. Absolutely an amazing product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy To Apply - Sands Easily - Time Will Tell This product is easy to work with as long as you take your time and don't make a mess. I am refinishing the steel chassis on a small British sports car so there are a lot of tubes in a small space. I gave everything a good wipe with Eastwood PRE Painting Prep. Then the Encapsulator brushes on easy and covers well. I let the first coat dry for a few days and then I went back to hit the spots I missed and give everything a second coat. I was very happy to see how easy the sanding was. I used 400 grit on a soft backing pad and it cleaned-up and scuffed very nice. I just got done with the second coat and I'm very pleased with the results, especially knowing I can sand it nice and flat before I apply the Eastwood's Chassis Black Satin. Hopefully this product will do its job and preserve my little car for many years into the future. I'll give it five stars based on my trust in Eastwood's quality and promise of a rust-free future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product!!!! This rust encapsulator is great!! I spent a long time searching for the best product to get to prevent rust on the underside of my Runner all the ones I found with water-based and in my mind water-based would not work well for rust I ended up finding this after some searching and this stuff is absolutely outstanding!! I just grinded rust off with a wire wheel and painted over it with the rust encapsulator one coat goes on heavy it's much thinner than I was expecting it to be so I made a pretty bad mess all over but this stuff is awesome I can't say that enough! It's been on there only a week and to tell that it's as great as I think it is we have to test the longevity of the product but initially I couldn't have made a better choice.... make sure when you do this job to have a Tyvek suit or something on I got a bunch of it on my arms and for the life of me I cannot get it off I tried bar soap and dish soap right away didn't work then I tried nail polish remover didn't work then I tried a chemical they have at work for removing dies and paint and then I tried goop orange cleaner none of that work eventually I just peeled most of it off after it dried I still have some even now and it's been a week.... but in my mind that says if there's not any chance of me even scrubbing it off my arms it will never come off my Runner frame. All of the photos are a single coat before and afters.... THIS IS A VERY RECOMMENDED PURCHASE!! I WILL MOST DEFINITELY BE BUYING THIS AGAIN!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I bought and used this product on my trucks frame after pulling the bed, I got rid of all the loose rust scale, preped the surface, rolled on the coating and I left it to cure for about 2 weeks inside the shop while I was away on work. I came back to find a weird fish scale effect, and looks like surface rust bleeding through. At first I was impressed with the finish it left since initial application but now I'm un satisfied.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't make it a year Used this less than a year ago. About the ONLY thing this encapsulates is your cash. I live in MN where rust runs rampant. Followed directions to no avail. If I could get my cash back I would.

Questions & Answers

I’m looking for a product I can apply to the roll cage of my sxs to keep it from rusting, but able to easily grind off to weld more tabs for lights and or accessories when needed. Since it says not recommended for UV areas what product would fit the bill?

Asked by: Kyle
Based off of what you are describing- the Original Black Matte Rust Encapsulator (which is UV stable) would probably be your best bet (other than using an Epoxy primer). Here is a link to the size options we have on our website:

Ford Expedition hood and hatch are aluminum, doing paint failure repair. Can Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Plus be used after panel prep to increase adhesion before applying sanding primer? Is there a better suggestion?

Asked by: WW in MT
This can be used but a better option would be Self Etch or Epoxy primer if the surface is down to bare clean metal.

My frame is a mix of factory paint that looks okay and some rusted cross members. Do i need to remove the factory paint to bare metal.

Asked by: Anonymous
No you do not you just need to scuff up the existing finish and clean it with our Pre and then apply the Rust encapsulator over the top.

The can I just got definitely does not dry matte black. It has a sheen like a satin finish. Has the formula changed??

Asked by: John88
No, if you believe your can does not have the consistency it should please contact Customer Solutions with pictures or 800-343-9353.

What was the brand name of that "handy dandy" sprayer he was using?

You can spray out of any of our HVLP guns ( with a 1.7mm tip, without needing to thin. However, if thinning is desired we recommend using Xylene.
