Customer Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These Butt-Weld Backers work great! I have two sets of them. My welding bench top is 1/2; CR Steel plate. I use the backer plates to hold frames made of 3/16' & 1/4" Angle 2x3 3x3 sizes and they hold amazingly well! Nothing slips! After tack welding, I remove the Backer Plates to prevent overheating them. I see a number of complaints about the plates becoming demagnetized on first use. This is most likely due to overheating. Neodymium magnets, while very strong and not affected by external magnetic fields (present around welding cables) they are temperature sensitive and begin losing their strength above 176F, and will completely demagnetize if heated above 590F, both easily achievable in a welding environment. From K&J Magnetics: https://www.kjmagnetics.com/neomaginfo.asp Neodymium (Rare Earth) Magnet Demagnetization Rare Earth magnets have a high resistance to demagnetization, unlike most other types of magnets. They will not lose their magnetization around other magnets, or if dropped. They will however, begin to lose strength if they are heated above their maximum operating temperature, which is 176°F (80°C) for standard N grades. They will completely lose their magnetization if heated above their Curie temperature, which is 590°F (310°C) for standard N grades. Some of our magnets are of high temperature material, which can withstand higher temperatures without losing strength.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great I bought these for quarter panel replacement and they work great. I've seen the negative reviews, but the secret is magnets don't like heat. If you get the plates too hot the magnets will die. Take your time and they will stay stuck to the work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tool Magnets are nice and strong. Only with they were a little thinner and more flexable but still a great tool to have in the welding cart.
