FAQs

Will the scroll compressor need to be hardwired or will it have a plug?
The scroll compressor will come with a 10 ga cord that will not have a plug end. This will give you the option to hardwire or install an appropriate plug of your choice.

Will a 20 amp breaker be sufficient for power usage?
Refer to the Compressor nameplate for voltage and amperage requirements. All wiring must be done by a licensed electrician, in accordance with National Electric Code and state and local requirements. For best performance, the Compressor must be installed on a dedicated circuit, with a circuit breaker or fuse for protection. Each time the Compressor motor starts, it will momentarily draw several times its full load amperage. It is important to consider this start-up surge when specifying circuit breakers or fuses. If fuses are used, time-delay type must be installed.

How Much does it cost to ship the Scroll Compressor?
Shipping for a Scroll Compressor is by truck freight and is calculated after it is added to the shopping cart. In store pick up will also be available at our retail locations.

Does the Scroll Compressor still need an air Filter/Drier?
Just like a piston compressor the scroll compressor compresses air which causes the air temperature to rise and moisture to condense Therefore the same Filtration and moisture separation will be needed to ensure clean dry air.

What are the maintenance requirements?
After the first year we specify an oil change and every three years we specify an oil and filter change. There is an air filter, an oil filter and a moisture separator/filter that would be changed at that time.

Where is this Compressor Made?
The air compressor is made in China to Eastwood's specifications. We do all validation and testing of products here in the USA to ensure that they meet our exacting standards.

How does a scroll compressor work?
A scroll compressor uses two interleaving scrolls to pump, compress or pressurize fluids, including liquids and gases. One of the scrolls is typically fixed, while the other scroll orbits without rotating, which results in trapping, pumping or compressing pockets of fluid between the scrolls.

Another method for producing the compression motion is co-rotating the scrolls at the same time, but with offset centers of rotation. The relative motion is the same as if one were orbiting around the other.

How do you quiet an air compressor?

The easiest solution to quieting an air compressor is to buy a new ultra-quiet model. If you are looking for a way to quiet your existing air compressor, there are some tips that you can follow.

You can install an intake silencer, which will help to dampen the sound produced by the incoming air rushing through the filter of your air compressor. Another tip is to install anti-vibration pads under your stationary air compressor. You can also build your own soundproof box to house your air compressor.

If those methods don't work, it is recommended to move your air compressor as far away from you as possible or wear hearing protection when near your air compressor.

Is a scroll or a rotary compressor better?

In general, rotary air compressors have more power and can cool more air than a scroll air compressor. Rotary compressors are usually a better option in larger central air conditioning systems, but the power could be wasted if used in a smaller central unit or a window air conditioner.

I have heard of customers say they had moisture in the oil tank. Is this a problem?

We have found that with humid climates and intermittent use, the scroll compressor will ingest moisture. If the moisture filter is not replaced or gets saturated, moisture can collect in the oil tank. Rest assured this moisture will NOT be collected in the air tank nor enter your air supply. While the excess moisture will not hamper performance of the unit it can be a nuisance with oil mist expelling through the unloader valve (the port under the pressure switch).

To resolve this occasional issue, the Moisture Drain Kit comes pre-installed on the the new Elite 30/60 Scroll Compressor (item 63600) for better performance.

What is optimum oil fill level?

Oil should be filled halfway between the ADD and FULL marks, not the whole way to the FULL line.

What improvements have been made to this new Eastwood QST 30-60 Scroll Air Compressor?

To increase the performance of this unit, a new and improved pressure switch has been added for longer service life in a wider variety of conditions.

The hoodless design offers superior cooling, easier serviceability, and no sacrifice in noise reduction.

A moisture drain kit is now included and makes it easier then ever to drain any oil tank moisture build up so the compressor always runs at peak performance.

    Safety Information

Always read and fully understand operators manual before using this product. Always consult a certified electrician to install the unit. Always keep hands out of the way of rotating components. Never operate this tool in wet conditions due to electrical shock hazard. Never weld to the tank of a compressor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest compressor ever! This compressor is the most impressive machine In my shop! I couldn’t believe my ears and also the rapid air replenishment. I was very skeptical based on a number of reviews. When I received the compressor I followed all the instructions for startup and magic to my ears the compressor quickly filled up the tank and we began to work it. I have a number of air tools with everything from 5” DA sanders to 1.5 hp angle grinders, this compressor can handle all of them. I know I made the best choice for my air needs. Just for comparison this compressor replaced my 60 gallon California air tools silent compressor and the difference in quality, sound and air production are day and night. Cannot recommend enough. Do not hesitate to buy you will not be disappointed. We run our compressor 2-3 hours a day average and it is piped throughout the shop using 3/4” rapid air lines. It’s a workhorse getting ready to purchase number 2.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for the home shop Super quiet and plenty of power. I have been looking for the right compressor for a while and this one is it. It is very compact. I was surprised by how little heat is generated while it is running. It produces maybe 1/10 of the water in the tank that my old piston compressor did. Fills fast and has now leak down at all. Love this unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good compressor. Good compressor. Runs well and quiet. Here is some information that really should have been provided with the unit. 1. The oil that compressor ships with has florescent dye in it, so its pink, don't freak out due to that color; QST Oil sold by eastwood is clear / golden like most average oils are. 2. The replacement oil should be ISO 32 or ISO 46 weight full synthetic compressor (aka hydraulic) oil (eastwood QST Oil bottle does not list its ISO viscosity and link to QST Oil SDS is dead). Water separates from oil well, but only water contained in oil reservoir will drain, since all plumbing for scroll and cooler is on top. So, if leaving for long storage run it for couple minutes after the water drain to recirculate oil and drain water again the next day, to get the water from scroll and oil cooler that did not drain on day 1. 3. When compressor starts up there is about half a second rattle sound (almost sounding like moving gears engaging). According to eastwood it is expected and is the intake valve opening. 4. There is no automatic water purge. All moisture from the air will need to be drained out of the air tank or oil tank on regular intervals. If you are running the compressor allot, more moisture will be in air tank since it will be vapor in hot oil and will pass through the filter. If you are running compressor for short duration and oil does not get hot, all that moisture will stay in oil tank and needs to be drained from oil tank before oil level increases above max level.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny! Well, I waited for months thinking about purchasing a QST 30/60 and I finally pulled the trigger as a birthday present to myself, I am not disappointed! Quiet and fills tank in less than 3 minutes. I can't be more happy with my purchase.

    Questions & Answers

Can I put a 80 gallon auxiliary tank on this unit?

    Asked by: James
Thank you for your question: Yes you can! Eastwood Elite 80 Gallon Auxiliary Air Compressor Tank is compatible as well as other auxiliary tanks. It will need to be plumbed properly as I am sure you are already aware. Make sure you are running a high quality filter dryer on the system and do not forget to drain the tanks of any moisture daily, if possible.

I have a 50amp breaker with NEMA 6-50R for My Mig 180 that I currently use. Is the plug outlet the same? Can I just unplug the welder and plug in this compressor?

    Asked by: TomV119
You would be able to run the compressor, however although the compressor doesn't list the NEMA configuration for the compressor it is probably a 20 or 30 amp / 240 volt which would be different then what your welder uses. So you would have to change the plug on the compressor, or add an additional j box and run a set of wires from the 50 amp over to new box and use a 30 amp or whatever compressor requires, Just wont be able to run them simultaneously

What is the operating temperature of the oil to reduce the water build up in the oil tank ?

    Asked by: Midwester1
There is no specific oil temp to reduce the moisture internally. Moisture and small amount of oil are to be expected in the air tank - this is not an oil-less air compressor. There may also be moisture accumulation in the oil tank. We recommend draining this on a daily to weekly basis based off usage. Please see out technical service bulletin: https://www.eastwood.com/30-60-scroll-compressor-service-bulletin-1 It really depends on your use case and environmental conditions. We have some updated general guidance in the instruction manual (https://www.eastwood.com/images/library/63600Q_QST_3060_Scroll_Compressor_INSTRUCTIONS.pdf), but the general theme is in more humid environments (eg. summer time in the south) where you're using the unit intermittently several time a week it is a good idea to quick drain it before you switch it on every day. It takes less than thirty seconds to flip the valve, watch the flow, and close it. Weekly at a minimum. If you use the unit hard enough that the oil boils off the moisture that's great and you might not need to drain it very often. In northern winters (like right now here in PA) you may also not need to drain it often just because the humidity in the air is so low. If you have further questions or feel that your compressor is malfunctioning, please reach out to our Project Advisor Team at 800-343-9353, press 1.

The manual says that you should use 1/2 fittings, hose, etc with this compressor and going to 3/8" will "greatly" hamper performance. My air hoses are 3/8" with 3/8" high flow quick connectors at the end and on tools. Do I need to go to 1/2" everywhere?

    Asked by: Dave G
3/8 is more than adequate! see https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/air-flow-compressed-air-pipe-line-d_1280.html for more detial.
