Description

Rust Encapsulator for Auto Repair

Stop rust in its tracks! Eastwood Rust Encapsulator is ideal for parts on project cars that have started to rust, but would be very difficult to replace or fabricate. Simply spray it onto springs, frames, panels and other parts. On properly prepared surfaces that are free of oil and grease, this product seals and stops rust and corrosion from spreading. But it performs even better than our original formula. In fact, our black Rust Encapsulator has been formulated with SUPERIOR corrosion resistance to "hardware store rust paints"! It will also prevent new rust from forming so your parts will remain strong.

Stronger Than Ever

If you thought it was good before, wait until you try the newest version of our great anti-rust spray. We fortify our over-rust aerosol with an epoxy that helps it stick to the metal and also helps topcoat paints adhere to the encapsulator. Or you can leave it as is for a cool OEM-black look on your suspension or chassis. The latest formulation is strongly heat-resistant to handle the high operating temperatures of a vehicle and will cure quickly so you can resume your project work.

Outperforms the Competition

When tested against well-known brands, Eastwood Rust Encapsulator has proven to be superior in resisting sunlight, preventing rust creep and promoting overall durability. And by using a spray can, you can get to the nooks and crannies that are prone to rusting yet are hard to completely cover with a brush or paint gun. Buy it together with our 1-quart cans of heavy-duty anti-rust and you'll have a full solution to stop rust from eating away at your ride. Eastwood's 100 percent customer satisfaction guarantee means you can shop with confidence every time you visit.

FAQs

Rust Encapsulator can be applied with the Undercoating System, but this application isn't recommended because Rust Encapsulator requires surface to be free of grease, oil, and loose rust. The best product to coat inside box sections is the Heavy Duty Anti-Rust (16017ZP). This waxy, oily product flows into pinch welds & through rust to seal surface from contact with moisture & air, but cannot be painted over so is only suitable for inside box sections that don't show. Use lacquer thinner for cleanup.

Accessories

In places where little or no surface prep can be done, our Heavy-Duty Anti-Rust (16017ZP) is actually a better choice for applying into blind areas such as box sections. Buy 3 or more quart cans and save!

Application Tips

Wire Brush to remove loose rust, scale and paint. Remove dust, grease, oil deposits. Shake can for at least 2 mins after mixing ball starts to rattle. Feather surrounding paint with 220 grit sandpaper. Apply Rust Encapsulator can 10-12" from surface. Single coats dry to the touch in 20 minutes and are thoroughly dry in 3-4 hours at 68 degrees F. For greater durability a second coat can be applied one hour after the first. Allow 6-8 hours after last coat before applying top coat. See can label for more details.

Safety Information

Work in a well ventilated area when applying this product. The use of a respirator like our Professional Respirator (34029) is recommended when applying this coating. Shake vigorously for 2 mins before spraying !!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This stuff works. Back in 2016, I decided to fix the roof of my 1997 F250, which was almost completely bare of paint, covered with surface rust and pitting. I tried sanding/painting with rustoleum but the rust came back in a few months. Early 2017 I used Eastwood rust encapsulator spray: 2 coats, no topcoat. 3 years later when I sold the truck the rust had not returned. I just used it again on a rusty mower deck. I expect it to last the life of the mower.

Questions & Answers

Can this be sprayed over old paint if it’s been scuffed with 80 grit and prepped?

Asked by: Bb88
This can be applied over existing finish if sanded and cleaned and de greased. Please be sure to test a small area first as we can not guarantee 100% compatibility technically with paints/coatings we do not sell.

Can this be applied over old paint and bonds that has been sanded down?

Asked by: Nick
Technically we can only guarantee compatibility with what we sell. However, it is safe in most instances as long as the surface is properly abraded and cleaned. Be sure to test a small area first though.

Since Rust Encapsulator is epoxy fortified, would it adhere to a clean scuffed steel surface as well as epoxy primer? And can Rust Encapsulator be used as a primer?

Asked by: Gary H
This can be applied over a steel surface and can be used as a primer for our chassis black. It can be applied over our epoxy primer but has not been tested with other manufacturers.

When in the process is it best to spray the aerosol rust encapsulator? I'm at the first primer coat after blasting. I'm thinking now encapsulator, then seam sealer, then more primer and then single stage urethane. Does that work?

Asked by: bkap
Thanks. Most of the areas that need protection were unreachable by the blasting and first coat of primer, so I'm assuming it will work. And if it goes over some primer, I'm hoping that doesn't cause a problem.

I only applied one coat of it on each side of a vw pan, I'm planning to spray with extreme black primer and then extreme chassis black. Should I be sanding if I will be doing these steps a few days to a week in between? And will one coat of each be ok?

Asked by: xfactor6
You could get away with one coat of the primer, but the paint will need at least 2. At the time frame that would have elapsed in between applying this- the surface will need to be abraded with 400 grit paper.

Can this product be used as a underhood paint? The heat resistance is higher in the rust encapsulator then the underhood product?

Asked by: Vick79
This product would not be recommended to be used underhood due to the heat.

How long does it take for this product to cure before applying a body filler over top? Is fiberglass matting with resin an appropriate product to use over top of this Encapsulator ? Thank you

Asked by: Kipp
We recommend letting the product cure for a full 18 hours and then scuffing before applying filler or fiberglass over the filler.

I am having the interior media blasted, so the metal will all be bare metal and rust free. Can this be applied directly to the metal?  If so, can it be sprayed with a HVLP spray gun directly out of the gallon? What size tip should be used?

Asked by: Icepick1969
We recommend using our Pre-painting Prep or our Afterblast after the metal is blasted, since there could be residue left over from the lasting media. Then you can apply the Rust Encapsulator. The HVLP tip size would be 1.4mm.
