Eastwood Rust Converter

Product Overview:

Description

Instead of throwing out rusted automotive parts that you know will be hard to replace, use Eastwood Rust Converter to restore their performance. This acidic paint is formulated for panels and parts that have heavier rust but still are structurally intact. By spraying or brushing Rust Converter on the surface, you trigger a chemical reaction that turn residual rust into more stable iron oxide. It also forms a paintable black protective coating that is compatible with most topcoats. Last but not least, Rust Converter seals the metal to help prevent future corrosion.

Use rust converting treatment as part of a complete restoration process that gets your barn find back on the road. Our formula penetrates the metal quickly and doesn’t require any sanding. Since the paint is water-based, it’s much safer than traditional solvents. The Eastwood Garage has much more information about Rust Converter, including when to use it versus other anti-rust solutions (such as Rust Encapsulator ). Extend the life of your vehicle by doing the job right with a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee.

  • Rust Converter stops residual rust, and turns it into a black, protective, ready-to-paint coating, without sanding. Just apply to transform the rust
  • Penetrates faster than other brands
  • No sanding needed - just apply to transform rust
  • Coverage: 50 square feet per quart
  • No mixing needed
  • 90 Day Warranty

Eastwood's own high-tech formula converts rust into a protective polymeric coating that's ready to go as a primer, and is compatible with most top coats. That new protective coating will also seal the surface against moisture to prevent future rust growth.

Our customers have told us about a lot of different uses for this versatile product. Available in an aerosol spray or liquid containers, this rust converter will help you either restore or maintain your project vehicle. Contact us today by phone or email, and we'll answer your questions about whether this handy product can help your situation.

This high-tech formula halts residual rust in its tracks and converts it into a black protective polymeric coating that eliminates the need for sanding. The converted protective coating is a suitable primer, and is compatible with most top coats. Simply remove loose rust with a wire brush, then apply Eastwood’s Rust Converter. Allow to dry, then top coat it with a quality coating, such as Eastwood’s Chassis Black. Single component; no more mixing.

Application Tips

Eastwood Rust Converter must be applied over heavy rust. If there is no rust present, there will be nothing for the product to react with and adhere to. You will only see it convert rust in the areas where rust is present.

The surface should be clean and dry before application of Rust Converter. If moisture is present or the surface is damp, it can cause the product to dry milky white or not adhere to surface.

When preparing the surface, it is important not to take it down to the bare metal. If this occurred, a metal primer is needed in place of the rust converter. To prepare the surface, remove loose particles of rust and debris with a wire brush or rag. Remove any grease, oil, or salt residue using PRE. Please note that any residue left on the surface will interfere with the adhesion of the product.

Eastwood Rust Converter should be stored in a cool dry place, protected from freezing or temperatures above 100 degreesF. Optimum results are obtained when the surface temperature and the product are between 50 degreesF and 95 degreesF. Do not apply if the surface temperature is below 50 degreesF as it will take longer for the product to react and form a hard surface. This can also cause the product to dry milky white or not fully adhere to the rust. If the temperature of the surface is significantly higher than 95 degreesF, it can cause some of the components to evaporate too quickly and interfere with adhesion.

Application — It is important to apply a thin coat first and allow it to dry before applying a second coat. Allow the surface to cure for 48 hours and protect it from moisture, rain or dew. On thick areas or deep encrustations of rust, it is important to wire-brush these areas to as level to the surface as possible without removing all the rust. The product will absorb into deep rust, leaving little product on the surface, resulting in rust bleed-through if not properly prepped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Peterbilt frame This worked like it says. I used it on my peterbilt frame after cleaning an chipping away loose rust I used a harbor freight spray gun an sprayed it on nice an thick. I let it cure for 3 days then put a gloss black top coat over it with having to clean or prep the pain laid on good with no problems. I will say that after curing it made some rust I couldn’t chip off so hard that it flaked off after which I personally liked. Great product will buy again

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product in quarts but not so much in aerosol I've tested both the product in aerosol form and quart form and I feel they are different formulation. The product in quart is crazy good and will really convert rust, even light surfast rust. I give it an easy 5 starts. However I've tried the product in aerosol and I feel it doesn't really react that much with the rust and it does nothing. You can see it in the first picture in my review, I've tried both product on the same surface, the quart product reacted very well and created a strong black finish while the aerosol product did nothing. I'm also including a nice before and after picture of a succesfull rust treatment unsing the product that comes in quart

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Rust Converter Presently using it 1948 Chevy Pickup truck we are refurbishing, we applied it to all rusted areas that needed it. We basically applied it to fenders inside and outside surface and now will apply Rist Oleum primer and oil based paint. I think it will hold up great.

Questions & Answers

Qt vs spray. What works better the aerosol spray or qt ? I have a step van and my roof is rusting. Have some rust holes want to stop the rest from rusting anymore

Asked by: Chris
Thank you for your question: Please prep the area of any loose flaking rust or paint. Wipe down with Eastwood Pre paint prep or acetone prior to applying Rust Encapsulator, primers or paints. As always, for best results, spraying from a paint gun is the best option with a 1.4mm needle nozzle HVLP. The Aerosol option is great for smaller areas, tighter spots or quick touch ups. It can also be brushed on as well using the quart.

Hi, I have a carport with steel beams and posts. Can I paint the surfaces with regular house trim paint after using the rust converter?

Asked by: John1072
Ues, as long as you scuff up the surface and clean it thoroughly. I'm not sure how long the house paint with last. We usually use an epoxy for long lasting durability.
